  • "the conclusion it reaches is that the diseases and conditions we previously thought where tied to being overweight are actually more likely to be caused by a sedentary lifestyle" Exactly, Yeh I always like to think about a quote from Frank Booth "It is a common misconception by the general public and most of the…
  • Yeh agreed, and I apologise for the tacky headline. However, if I had wrote "Some new (and thus inherently questionable) evidence suggests that it may be worth reconsidering how much artificial sweetners you should consume in your diet and balance the proposed negative effects of consuming the lower calorie high sweetner…
  • Just out of curiosity (sorry for going off topic) do you get this with MSG? I get migraines from sweetners but also MSG really bad its my main trigger. As I said just a curiosity!
  • Absolutely agreed with these comments. It's certainly to early to jump either way, but definitely raises questions.
  • Someone above made a good point about how this sort of post can develop into an argument. So im not going to counter what your saying. All I will say is that the article you have linked is an online article written in 2009. The information presented above was not available at the time (hence why it's in Nature as…
  • Good point, but this study wasnt just in mice. It was also correlational in 400 humans. And interventional in 7 (admittedly a small sample) with 4 of 7 humans exposed to an FDA approved dose of saccharin becoming substantially glucose impaired within one week.
  • I presume you mean people butt-hurting me? Your probably right, but hopefully a few people will take the time to read a well conducted journal of nature study and consider the findings. I'm only hoping to share the information. Your of course welcome to dismiss as bull**** :)
  • For me its smoked salmon with full fat cheese spread, Only about 500kcal but the fat and protein just seems to work perfect
  • Interesting article, but not well written. "Studies have shown that it only takes about 1.8 ounces of processed meat to increase the proliferation of cancer by 50 percent, heart disease by 42 percent, and diabetes by 19 percent. These Subway sandwiches contain twice that amount. Yummmmmy!" No reference to study, no context…
  • Paracetamol has no calories. Yes the liquid may be have some calories. If you care, remember that sugar is important for your immune system, so will probably help overcome the cold anyway

  • One of the professors at my university was given a ton of samples to take to the states, white powder, clear bags. = 4 Hours trying to convince security it was just protein powder.
  • I Disagree. Saying it's only calories in/out is relevant, because whilst there is more complexity to it than that, the vast majority of users on MFP only need to worry about energy intake. Elite athlete? Worry about macronutrients Severely obese? Worry about macronutrients Metabolic conditions? Worry about macronutrients…
  • Focus on energy deficit regardless how you do it. However, if you want to care about timings, consider getting protein intake in boluses throughout the day to preserve lean mass during your energy deficit. Point two is SECONDARY to point one. Get energy deficit first, thats the priority, doesnt hugely matter if you do 1,…
  • Great comments on here guys, Sorry for using references I realise that’s against the internet rules :P Really sorry to hear about your husband. The theories about protein are certainly not new so I don’t doubt this lecture at all and the evidence does show in a role of protein in some animal models. However, there’s been a…
  • For protein: can you get most of your fat from drinking oil? Well of course. Would you want to? Maybe not so much Nothing wrong with protein shakes and they do the job. But they are called supplements for a reason. Get most of your protein from eating food, then fill gaps with shakes as you wish. For the second question.…
  • Whilst I have no problem with nutritionists, you have to remember that they are no different to personal trainers: In that they are only a tool. The only person who can actually achieve your goals is you. You sound like you already know that you need to reduce your calorie intake a little more. Do you really need a…
  • Your clearly another muppet who didn't even read the article, don't worry though, your not alone, as the authors on those 'reputable' magazines and papers didn't bother either, otherwise they would have noticed the study didn't even look at smoking! It's a correlational, cause and effect study so you can't actually…
  • This and BMI is meaningless, if your serious about measuring body composition, get some bodyfat calipers. You can buy decent sets for about a tenner these days.
  • The study this is based on is awful See here for why the method is flawed: http://t.co/ntEeSGgnHS See here for why the statistics are flawed, and that there may have been a financial confliction of interest: http://t.co/AW6V73X3rf
  • Yes, problem is you have to be a massive nerd (*waves hand) to spot it!
  • Oh no! I'm getting really stressed over this! Good thing stress doesn't cause cancer.... OH ****
  • Oh no, I was just about to start a brocolli blueberry soup diet so that I didn't get cancer from eating meat protein.
  • Many people have pointed out the obvious: correlational study etc, im going to point out the less-obvious: First, the authors trawled through the data, finding nothing of interest for diabetes, then rerunning the models looking at protein and age, then finding no main results arbitrarily splitting into 50-65 year olds and…

  • Your oopses are so much better than mine. Mine consist of either a bag of doritos or a dominos pizza!
  • Shin splints are awful. Rest is really important, but obviously an issue. Many people have mentioned running form / appropriate footwear this is important. As mentioned Eliptical is also a good option during rest period. My personal suggestion is to have a go at some of these. They worked great for me, particularly the…
  • Maybe my posting here was inappropriate, but it was out of genuine concern, and I am certainly not the only person to have done so. I also explained my point, and stated that I genuinely wished the best for the OP. You on the other hand have jumped in questioning every comment made, on the basis that the OP is always right…
  • Why are you so defensive? The article you posted is for people with eating disorders, not post ED trying to lose weight. 1. "Lived" experience can undoubtedly be useful, but also can be misleading. 2. I do not believe the OP is lying. 3. I am questioning the information they have been told. 4. I am questioning whether…
  • The reason I disagreed, is because the reality is that far more people think they are 'different' than they actually are. Metabolism is constantly evolving, adapting and dynamic, it responds to new stimulus but it does not hold onto the past indefinitely. Maybe, you are a unique case, but If I held this conversation with…
