  • Look into some weight training, supposed to be good for blood sugar levels and I read some info that said Chia seeds are good for helping to naturally control blood sugar levels. I take the chia seeds for other reasons but they seem to have several different benefits.
  • You can do it! My father in law is one year older than you and with a controlled diet and exercise he has managed to get off all of his diabetes medication.
  • I think I started running in april or may. I was doing other cardio stuff before that though.
  • Thanks! I'm gonna run a half-marathon in November....all 13 miles along the ocean, can't wait!
  • Wow! Thanks for all the replies, great ideas here :-)
  • I like pretzels but you still have to watch how many you eat. Also there are some non-fried potato snacks...can't remember the brand that are really good and satisfy my urge to eat crappy snack :-)
  • Welcome! You've come to a great site with great people. I think everyone feels the same way a the beginning. Don't give up and you'll begin to see results. Feel free to send me a friends request if you'd like :-)
  • Joined your challenge :-)
  • Be prepared for the running addiction to set in. Next you'll be saying "I bet I could do a half marathon!" Congrats to you and your daughter.
  • The armband slipped on me also. I use a running belt that's not specifically made for the phone but it seems to work well. I got my wife a new Ipod nano so she leaves her phone behind and still gets the music and the Nike plus app.
  • Start slow and work up. Pick something that you enjoy doing. It's not going to be fun to begin with but that will change. When I first began working out last summer I weighed 278 pounds and could only run a few hundred yards. After CONSISTANT exercise and watching my calories I now weigh 230 pounds and can run 7 miles. Be…
  • Watch out...it's addicting. I started exercising last year and hated running. I did eliptical trainer 4days a week. My father in law and wife convinced me to do a 5k in March and it really changed my attitude. I started running then...mostly running and walking. I now run 20+ miles a week. I do a run walk interval for…
  • Have you noticed any changes in your body? Maybe you're losing fat and gaining muscle weight. I've gone weeks without losing weight but have gone from a pair of pants not fitting to being able to wear them. I've decided to get away from purely weight loss related goals and focus more on fitness. I still follow the mfp…
  • My adivice is don't give up. Running isn't fun in the beginning. Keep your pace slow and do your workouts. Don't be afraid to walk a little even when you run the race, you're less likely to get injured and you'll find that you can run alot longer. Finishing your first race (no matter what the time) will be a real…
  • Don't get stuck in the idea that you have to run the entire 60 minutes even during the race. I did 6 miles over the weekend. I ran the first mile at about a 9min 20 sec pace. For the next 4 miles I ran the same pace but did a 1 min walk break after each 4 min run. I then ran the last mile or so. I still finished the 2…
  • I'm around 5'10" and the height weight chart for males says a heavy weight for me is 179 pounds. On the day I walked out of army bootcamp 20 years ago I was slim, muscular and in excellent physical condition...and I weighed more than 179. I think it's different for everyone. I believe it depends on bones structure, muscle…
  • I also vote for getting the right shoe, it made a huge difference for me. You may also consider a run/walk routine for your workouts. You are less prone to injury when you do a run walk and it doesn't hurt your time as much as you might think. I did 6 miles on saturday in 60 min and I took several 1 minute walk breaks…
  • Talapi is really good. It cooks fast, low in calories and it's healthy. My kids love it. You can make a big pot of spagetti sauce with or without a lean meat on the weekend and use it during the week. Couscous instead of rice if you're looking for speed. Not sure about lunches. My kids buy at school. I usually take lean…
  • Obviously you doctor is the trained professional but from all the reading I've done that sounds really low especially if you exercise regularly. A set number of calories doesn't take in your present weight or activity level. Let me give you an example. My wife ran 13 miles last Sunday and she burned 1300 calories just from…
  • Thanks for the responses!
  • Welcome to mfp. This is a great place to get motivation and support. You can try the Wii fit game. They are probably cheaper than a tread mill. Im sure there are also aerobic workouts on dvd. Count all your food, drink you water and don't starve yourself. Feel free to add me as a friend :-)
  • Great job. Did my first 5k last weekend. It was great! Much more fun than the daily workouts. Last year at this time I couldn't run for 30 seconds without getting winded. I'll have my wife post about her achievement, it will really motivate you :-)
  • Evening is also the worst time for me. The following things have really made a differerenc: 1. Exercise- A good workout can give you the necessary calories to have a night time snack. 2. Adjust your meals during the day to leave room for a snack at night. 3. Drink lots of water. 4. Pick a healthier snack with less…
  • Beach with no shirt :-)
  • I've learned that you need to eat in a way that you can live with for life. I don't deny myself a burger if I want it. I just count the calories and don't do it all the time. I work out 5-6 times a week but I'm not a slave to the gym. I do an hour of cardio and weight training. I eat the calories I get from exercise and…
  • I think it's a big deal! Good job on showing such amazing self control! Keep up the good work.
  • I've always heard that anything less than 1200 is a no-no, especially if you're exercising. Maybe add more exercise and add more calories.
  • Here's what I would do. Anyone feel free correct me if I'm off base: 1. If you're exercising you should adjust your calorie intake. You're burning more fuel so you need more to make your body run efficiently. 2. The daily calorie levels on MFP seem pretty low to start with. The one they give me is is equal to my BMR I…
  • You can definitely do it! Im a year older than you and in late July I got on the scale and saw that I had managed to get myself to 278 lbs. That was it for me. I started eating right and exercising. 2 weeks later my wife found this site. Since the beginning I have lost 41lbs. I went from being an utter couch potato to…
  • I take one evening a week where I go out and eat a meal without counting calories. I definitely exercise on that day and it hasn't effected my weight loss.
