  • I agree with the treadmill comment - much easier to know how fast you are (or aren't in my case) going on one of them. I've also had people tell me they go to a local school and use their track to run fast on the "long" sides and recover on the shorter sides, or run one fast lap and recover the next. But I also agree that…
  • Not when you're only 5'3" and don't have that much weight to lose. I'm a little shorter than the OP and 3 lbs is a big deal to me- whether it's up or down.
  • Glad I found this. I'm doing my first half in 11 days (yes, that's right - I'm counting down!!). Lots of good advice from everyone. Thanks!!
  • I've been running for about a year now and have only been able to get up to several miles (8 is the longest run I've done but I consistently run 13-16 miles per week with other workouts on the off days) by taking short walk breaks during my runs. My trainer does this too and convinved me to try it. It has greatly improved…
  • I completely agree to go to a specialty running store - not just because of the fitting, but because they will almost always take back shoes within 30 days - even if they've been worn outside - if they don't work out for you. That is really important to me as I had a pair of New Balance that were great the first couple of…
  • I wear an HRM and have only used RunKeeper twice (had been using MapMyRun but wasn't calculating correctly - makes me question all of my running accomplishments!). Anyway, yesterday RunKeeper said I burned 300 calories and HRM said 385. I am female, 5'2" and 130 lbs. Run pace was 11:30 minutes per mile for 3 miles -…
  • I was getting that numbness when I first started running after my run for the day. The best advice I have is to stretch really well both before and after. I think it eventually went away just because my body started getting used to that type of exercise and movement. That phase didn't last long. Also make sure your shoes…
  • Assuming you aren't stuck on just earbuds, google ear clip headphones and there are tons of options that clip over your ears to stay on. Some have ear buds and some cover the whole ear. I can't get earbuds to stay in at all, so I have been using the clip ones for years. My faves are Panasonic but I just ordered some…
  • I'm probably the funniest thing at my gym because I'm there to sweat and work out, and quite honestly don't care what anyone thinks about me. I am the one mouthing the words and banging my head to every song on my iPod, the one "dancing" on the elliptical or treadmill when one of my favorites comes on, the one that will…
  • I just bought some on Amazon and am using them in workouts from my trainer. I got three - 10, 15 and 20 pounds - for around $45-50. Shipping was pricey, but it was still cheaper than other sets I had seen. So far I really enjoy the workouts. Doing lots of different things with them and can tell they hit different parts of…
  • Good for you! My mom tried to get me to take swim lessons as a kid and I never liked it. Now that I have two little ones who love to swim, I figured I'd better be able to save them if I had to. I just completed my swim lessons at the Y and I'm 39! Good luck!!
  • I love this post, too. Sounds like my husband who says my 11:00 minute mile pace for my first 5K was super slow. He still thinks he can run 20 miles with a ruck sack on his back like he did in his Army days, so we have a bet that the next 5K I do, he won't train for while I will and he says he can beat me. I'll let you…
  • I used to eat oatmeal every day for breakfast (and am on about my fifth giant box of oatmeal from Costco) but lately have switched to oatmeal applesause muffins. I don't use as much oatmeal as I used to, but it makes breakfast much easier and they are yumm-o! Recipe: 1 cup of skim milk 1 cup of oatmeal Mix these two and…
  • I love spinning. I always thought it was a great ab workout if you use your ab muscles to support your weight while you are "out of the saddle," during spinning. I always see people in class leaning on the handle bars and they aren't working their abs at all. I've just started running and while I like it, I don't feel the…
  • And just now saw your response about your shots - I wouldn't drastically change your routine without a) talking to your doctor and b) keeping your monitor very close to keep an eye on how your blood sugar reacts at different times during the workouts. I'm on a pump so it's easier for me to manipulate my blood sugar. I've…
  • I am also a Type 1 and if I exercise in the morning it is ALWAYS before breakfast - I just make sure my blood sugar is high enough to sustain the workout. That said, I workout at 6 a.m. which is right after I wake up. If I were going to be up and active for an hour or two (which I think you said you would be), I would eat…
  • I am saying that metabolism at 23 is way different than it is at 39 - where I am now - and yes, muscle mass certainly helps with metabolism - but hormones completely screw with what you have always done and known. I have never been overweight (other than when pregnant) and have always generally been able to maintain a…
  • I wish some girl who wasn't 23 years old and only has 4 pounds to lose would not be so critical and judgmental of other people.
  • 4:30 is early, but as I've learned the last few weeks when I've had to travel, if I don't get up and do it then it just doesn't get done. As the other poster said - if it's a goal you want to achieve you will find time to do it. C25K usually only takes about 30 minutes on average so it's not a super long workout.
  • Exercise in the morning before your brain figures out what you're doing.
  • I also use the iPhone app and you can listen to your music while it tells you when to run, walk, etc. You can also run the "Map my Run" app which while the C25K app is running. I only use the map one to see if I am improving my time / distance. My only complaint about the iPhone app is that it takes you from running 10…
  • Live in IL but work in Creve Couer, MO. LOVE Soulard and the Cardinals!!
  • I travel a lot for work and the best "structured" workout is to use a deck of cards, assign an exercise to each symbol (i.e. diamonds = jumping jacks, hearts = crunches, etc.), shuffle the deck, then whatever card comes up, you do that number of that exercise - a 6 of hearts means you would do 6 crunches, the jack of…
  • I found this website a couple of weeks ago and it has tons of great workout music. It's set up for walking, running and cycling by beats per minute / miles per hour but I found great songs for any kind of workout. http://cycle.jog.fm/
  • Wish I knew. We were just saying yesterday how we'd both like to lose about 10 pounds. I told him it would be easy for him and he agreed that all he really needed to do was take the dog for a walk every day and quit eating fried foods. If it were that easy for me I'd be skinny as a rail! But we will get there, right?
  • I am with you. My husband is trying to be supportive of my running but I know he thinks it's a bit of a "joke" that I have a hard time running. I've just started C25K and I waited a few days to tell him because I didn't want to hear Mr. Army "I used to run 22 miles with a 100 pound ruck sack on my back..." blah blah blah.…
  • I'd like to start running but am not a fan of the treadmill. However, I also drink TONS of water when I work out - 28-32 oz during a spin class for example - so running outside without having my trusty water bottle right next to me "scares" me. How do you run without being able to drink water for 20-30 minutes? What am I…
  • New research has shown that the cholesterol in eggs does not equal in increase to cholesterol in our bodies. Eggs are a perfectly safe food - yes, the whole egg - and are actually very good for us, so eat as many as you want!
