Good point. I think even somebody without hypothyroid would be happy about losing 18 pounds. Great job!

This if off topic, but yesterday I bought two big sashimi grade tuna steaks. Can't do that all the time because they cost over $30, not unlike buying high grade beef steaks. Anyhow, last night I seared one steak, and today I grilled the other. They were totally awesome and my girls loved them. We'll be eating more tuna…

I totally get that. Today I was proud of myself for putting lots of "color" on my turkey sandwich: mini sweet pepper, baby spinach, red onion, and dill hamburger pickles. They had a ton of sodium. As soon as I logged my food I realized that I can't have pickles anymore.

We made the switch and what's great is that my daughters both love it too. We still keep some 1% milk around for them to drink with dinner and put on their cereal. My only complaint is the cost.

This site has a video on good running form: http://www.stridemechanics.com/about.html I actually WANT to run like you. I'm naturally a heal striker, meaning my feet tend to come down out in front of my hips. When your heal strikes first you knee is typically straight, and the impact goes directly up your leg to your body.…

Full disclosure, I work for Garmin, but I'm a customer too. I recently bought the Premium Heart Rate Monitor (Soft Strap). I've only used it for a couple of weeks (I'm wearing it to cardiac rehabilitation). It's really comfortable since it doesn't have the hard plastic piece like most HR straps. I'm still dialing in the…

Running in grass with regular running shoes is not a problem. Running on the gravel road depends on the size of the gravel. Several miles of the Topeka Half Marathon were on gravel roads with small to medium size gravel and I had no problem in my regular running shoes. I'm a big supporter of your local running store. If…

My heart rate used to go quite high. I wanted it lower to burn more fat. On my long runs, 8+ miles, it was always in the 170s. Over time, as I ran more miles and lost 25 pounds, my average heart rate dropped about 20 bpm. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/151481998 Not knowing ANYTHING about you, my two cents is to slow…

I used to use Body Glide, until a running store brought samples of TriSlide to a group run. It's made to help triathletes get in and out of a wet suit, but it works great for chafing. You just spray it on before the run and no matter how sweaty you get you won't chafe. http://www.sbrsportsinc.com/trislide_products.htm Just…

When I run in the morning I like to get up early and eat a very light breakfast 40 - 60 minutes before I run. This may be TMI, but I prefer to put some time between eating and running to let nature take its course so my run is uneventful. Might be more of an issue for longer runs. There is nothing worse than being out on a…

I ran my seventh marathon in April, and was supposed to run Twin Cities next month, but I had a heart attack in August. My next race after Twin Cities was Disney, 2013, and they let me defer. So, now I need to work up to a early spring 5K, a late spring and/or fall half, and then return to marathon running at Disney, 2014.…

I've had good luck with the McMillan Pace Calculator (http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/calculator). Pick any 4-month marathon training plan. Go run a 5K and then plug your time into the pace calculator and it will spit out a reasonable race goal, plus recommend pace/time for 400m, 800m etc. workouts. Follow those times. At…

I wore the Saucony Kinvara 2 when I trained for the Prairie Fire Marathon last year. I loved them. I didn't pay attention to my miles and got up to 600 miles on them and then my feet started getting sore. My bad. I switched back to Asics for my winter training only because I thought the extra material might be warmer. I…

Does it hurt more when you do lunges? I have a hip impingement. They are common. It is when you have some extra bone on the top of your femur that bumps into your hip when you raise your knee waste high ( or when you lunge). You can read all about it on the Web. Many people have it and don't develop any symptoms, but it…

You could also experiment with a foam roller. It's a "good pain" but it helps. You can pick those up any sporting goods store.

I've warn a pair of CEP compression socks in my last three marathons. Aside from looking totally dorky, I like them. I haven't had a problem with calf cramps since I got them, but that may just coincidence. I'll upload a pick to my profile with my "lovely" socks. My only dislike about them is they are a total pain in the…

bushidomama, I'm just now replying to your comment. Your husband and I are now connected. I hope I can offer him some encouragement. Running seven marathons did not do anything to remove the plaque that I built up over a lifetime, but it did slow down new build-up. I'm allergic to most statins and my cholesterol has always…

I hope that your father's procedure went smoothly. Good luck avoiding those pesky genes!

I was sitting on my bedroom floor last Saturday wiring a network connection. I had run 2-miles with my daughter two hours earlier. It was my first run in six weeks due to an injury. Had I not been injured and stopped running, I would have been on a 20-mile run with my running group training for my eighth marathon. Luckily…

Good for you, Fred. I'm doing the same. Wouldn't it be nice to send a message to the younger you saying to skip the fried foods? Oh, well. Better late than never. I'm now putting soy milk in my coffee. Soy milk! Who is this guy?
