  • @sijomial - You have been a long-time source of wisdom and support for others on here, and it has been appreciated. I do wish you a way to find some respite as you go through these difficult times ... and maintenance, while important, does take a step behind what you need to do now for those you love. Just do what you can…
  • So glad you started this thread, OP. I'm sure there are a ton of us out there who need it. I know I do. It is exactly the thread I needed. Have been off the forums for a while b/c nothing spoke to me ... this does. Name: jrwms714 How long in maintenance: 4.5 years Goal maintenance range: 136.5-138.5 Current weight: 140…
  • This is such a great thread! Thanks, @nowine4me for the podcast info. Going to try it today while at the gym. I am still fighting with that 2 lbs. over my range, i.e., 4 from the bottom of the range, and while that seems like a small amount, we all know it's a slippery slope. What usually works for me - and what I have NOT…
  • It’s quite a book, right? Again, I don’t agree with everything but I with a lot. Good for you with your scale. Small steps lead us back.
  • Oops. Have to clarify. I do log daily for myself, and do use goals. I just don't find it helpful to do it in forums. That's only my preference. It may work for others.
  • [quote=I was thinking of starting a “challenge” for maintainers only to get back to maintenance range. I think we have a different mentality about the process ... and many of us know each other from being on this particular forum. Would there be an interest if we created an accountability thread specific to maintainers…
  • This is exactly what happened to me. And exactly why, 2 lbs. over my range, I am pulling the reins back in. It's not 2, really, it's 4, if you don't figure in goal weight, and not just look at range. And 4 lbs. on a 5'0" is a LOT, enough to change a size. While my intake was rarely over maintenance, and sometimes less, I…
  • @MadisonMolly2017 : You're welcome for the book. There are a few things that I don't agree with, but overall, it really speaks to me. I reread it when I am battling my range. She also has a blog that you can subscribe to, but it comes very rarely, which may even be a good thing. She is one of the few people who speaks to…
  • One more thing that is helpful to me when in this same situation: although I do eat at a deficit, I find it easier to look at/change behaviors more than calories, i.e., I stop eating any carbs with breakfast, and stop snacking, healthy or not, after dinner, until I can get back to my weight range. As long as I am on track…
  • Just got back from 4 months away. Ate differently, did not exercise as much as I usually do, and yes, gained 2 lbs. But back on track. Life is good. I do think that we eat differently if we've been on maintenance for a while (5+ years here) ... at least I do. It comes pretty automatically to make good choices most of the…
  • Totally get it. In maintenance for 5+ years. Hit my scream weight, which to me means that I have to get right back to my range. But I bypassed it. Now it's only a bypass by two pounds, but I know that slippery slope all too well. And it's really 5 lbs. in you look at the bottom of my range. AND it's been on for 4 months,…
  • @WinoGelato Here is only one article about sugar addiction and detox. Dr. Lustig is well respected, and he is one among many. I do find that, for me, taking 3 days off of sugary anything does alleviate the cravings. You can do a search for "Sugar and Addiction" and find many things related. Also, 60 minutes did a segment…
  • 3-5 lbs. for your size sounds good to me. As for not eating dessert, in maintenance, you should be able to do that, but once in a while or a much smaller dessert than you are used to. I am satisfied with a bite or two when I used to eat the whole piece of whatever it was. But if dessert is your trigger, like potato chips…
  • I second the idea of a trending app. I use Happy Scale and it really helps. I am four years into maintenance and I want to add that the fear of regaining is something that is really intense at first, but as time goes on and your mind and body adjust to the fact that maintenance is, as someone said, having a range and…
  • Maintenance is just a continuation with more calories thrown in and fewer times that you eat what got you overweight in the first place. It takes a while to wrap your head around this, so be kind to yourself while you work on it. Yes, log if that works for you, and weigh, for sure, but also realize that this isn't the end…
  • I guess I am one of those outliers. The BMI has never worked for me or described me. I am 5'0", pear shape, super muscular from the waist down, with large calves and thigh for my size. Even before I worked out a lot and gained muscle, even when I was very young, I have always been at least 10 lbs. above the range and into…
  • Old posts are still relevant and since I am the OP, it's nice to see that. Perimenopause, like menopause, can cause weight gain. Your hormones, as you know all too well, are fluctuating and unpredictable. But it is possible to avoid the gain ... I am 'way past menopause and have lost 40 lbs. (on a 5'0" frame) and kept it…
  • First of all, to @middlehaitch: Over the years, you have been kind to many and have given very helpful advice in this forum and some others. I am sorry that you felt you were accused of being dishonest. I, for one, don't believe this is the case. To further comment on the OP's original question, I am four years into…
  • I knew that flights did this b/c they always do this to me, but I haven't taken a long car ride in years. This was 10 hours of driving with stops that made it 12, but the stops were quick ones. It surprised me that I bloated up about 5 lbs. And yes, it did go away within about 4 days, but this was a new one on me!!!
  • Four years here and had to smile at this post. Loved the comments about being able to fit into the same clothes, year after year, instead of finding them too tight or having to buy larger sizes. I so relate to that. For me, maintenance has not been all that difficult ... it's just the same as losing but with more calories.…
  • Yo-yo is not a bad term when in maintenance. And with a short string, as mentioned above, of course! I'm heading into my fourth year. I find I gain 3-4 lbs any time I eat in a restaurant (salt), which is often lately. Last week I ate two days in a row at restaurants, and one was Chinese (MUCHO salt, always there). I drink…
  • Try Tuna Creations. I was leery of them, but my Nutrition Action Newsletter gives them high marks, as do others on here. You have to get used to the taste ... they are more "fishy" than canned tuna because of the packaging, but really good and lots of flavors to choose from. You don't need to refrigerate them, they are low…
  • 1199 here!
  • 3 years in maintenance here ... for me, TDEE doesn't work, but a caloric range plus any exercise calories earned that day does. So some days I can eat a lot and others not so much. It evens out, and I never feel deprived and often can't even eat the amount of calories I've earned. You have to do what works for you.
  • I will go on a BMI rant here ... as I have in several posts. BMI does not take into account many things like gender and age.(Did you know that the BMI was introduced in 1832?) My BMI, if I believed in it, has me at 27, which is overweight. I find that difficult to believe when I wear a size 4 or 6 Petite. It does not take…
  • @middlehaitch Thanks so much! BTW, I always love your posts - here and in the Petites group!
  • @elisa123gal , I'd love to see that article. Do you have a link?
  • I am 72, and blessed with genes that make me look a lot younger. However, I have the inevitable sags and bags even with a lifetime of exercise. Weight loss merely helped me to FEEL younger. Maintenance, as others have said, is just the same thing as dieting with more calories to play with. BUT maintenance is also far more…
  • I would agree with logging your weight, but taking action when it moves out of what I call my "scream" weight. When you hit that high number, and when it stays there for a bit - three days, a week, whatever you set as not right in your head - then find a way to cut calories. I am in my third year of maintenance and what…
