Ah sorry didn't realise BBC iPlayer is region based.

Exactly. Don't believe everything you read on the Googles. https://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/aspartame-truth-vs-fiction/ "Conclusion Aspartame is a highly studied food additive with decades of research showing that it is safe for human consumption. As expected, the research is complex making it possible to cherry pick…

Black Flex active since December 2014 https://www.fitbit.com/user/322Z5L would love to have some more Fitbit friends, especially fellow runners :)

No offence but I don't think you really have any idea about anything you've said so far. You should take the time to read the links posted already about Dr Oz. He's like Foodbabe, he earns his $$$ from endorsements. From https://skeptoid.com/episodes/4495 Top 10 Worst Anti-Science Websites... "5. DoctorOz.com The nation's…

I concur with what others have said that 740 sounds very high for an hours exercise of what you've described, the best option is to get a heart rate monitor for steady state cardio as although they're not 100% it will be much more accurate than any machine or calculator. I'm 160lb and burn around 630 cals for an hours…

I use MPF when actively trying to lose weight and keep my midweek calorie intake fairly low on my 2 non-run days so I can 'bank' them for the weekends. It is hard but knowing I can eat *more or less* what I want at the weekends helps alot. And as I don't have much to lose I know its not long-term. But that's just what…

This is me too. I would rather do a long run three days a week to create a deficit/maintenance than cut my food down. And its worked for the last 8 years.

You may have seen a story doing the rounds about a teacher who lost 56lb eating nothing but McDonalds? I thought it was quite appropriate for this discussion, so I'm just gonna leave this here as I think it sums up some of this debate perfectly, especially the sentence at the end. Link to the full article below. "What did…

I agree with other posters that if you haven't been diagnosed as deficient and/or it hasn't been deemed appropriate by a doctor then there really no scientific basis to taking vitamin supplements. https://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/tag/vitamins/

+1, well said. I joined MFP in 2010 and have learnt more from lurking than I realise sometimes.

I think it may be the same piece but James Fell posted a link to his article for The Guardian. Shocking what they hide from the public to promote these shows. http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2016/jan/04/the-biggest-loser-returns-despite-critics-warnings

Or the utter BS that they claim... "If you replace your dinner with Almased®, you speed up the fat burning process during the night. Almased® not only curbs your hunger but also improves thermogenesis, the conversion of fat into heat. The body takes the energy it needs for the nightly repair of cells that were damaged…

I've just read through most of this thread and agree with some other posters that some of what has been written is fairly alarming. And as someone who always looks to science to confirm or refute claims, just thought I'd drop a few points on some of the stuff that's been posted here. While there is benefit to vitamins and…

Haha no, I agree! I wonder whether its the way its advertised other than in the UK then...we used to laugh that it was made from fungus :)
-
Maybe its different in the US then as over here its always marketed as a vegetarian option to meat?
-
That's really interesting. I've been eating Quorn for years here in the UK and knew what it was made from but not that it had caused problems. I love Quorn though, as a veggie it's great source of protein!

+1. I find I just don't have the same energy when trying to run in the morning. Plus midnight runs are the best :)

This is a good little read regarding detoxes like a Salt Water Flush and Master Cleanse...and how they are utter BS. http://modernhealthmonk.com/detox-truth-or-a-marketing-scam/

Aww me too. Every day is a special occasion for me :D

This explains it perfectly for me.

Listen to @sijomial - this guy knows what he's talking about.

Yay for us tall girls! I'm 5'10" and currently at 160 which is my highest weight in years but looking to get back to 140 which I was happily maintaining until around 18 months ago when I stopped exercising regularly. At my lowest I was 135 but felt that was a little too skinny for my frame. Doing weight training as well as…

Well done, you look fantastic :)

I'm 5'10" and was a UK size 8-10 (US 4-6) at 135lb a couple of years ago, but felt that was too skinny for my frame.

I lost nearly 3 stone over 3 years purely by running 3 times a week (totalling 12-19 miles), without changing any eating habits. Obviously I was burning off more than I was eating but I didn't focus on my diet at the time. So it worked for me, but all you're ultimately doing is creating a larger deficit which you can also…

That was my take on it too.
