  • You mention in your post that she doesn't participate in sports. I grew up not doing any sports, not liking sports, not wanting to be bad at sports, etc. It took me until I was 35 to think of myself as athletic. What about doing a couch to 5k with her? I had to learn that it was ok to keep going when I started to feel…
  • Good for you for seeing what you need to do. My husband is an alcoholic and hasn't had a drink in 20 years. He's also a nurse and sees a lot of patients who go in for surgery and have terrible troubles with DT for the couple of days they are without alcohol--it can be quite a health risk, so support from a doctor and a…
  • There have also been studies that people who exercise without watching calories actually do gain weight. It's nothing magical, it's just that it's easy to think "I just ran for 30 minutes and I'm really beat, so I will treat myself with some extra cheese and nuts on my healthy salad!" Turns out the run burned 275 calories…
  • I did find that I lost weight faster when I cut from a drink most nights to a couple of drinks a week. I always logged and stayed within my calories, but somehow it still mattered. Another approach is to reduce portion size, just like everything else. Get a champagne flute and fill it only half full. I was surprised that I…
  • I hit 55 this morning, after working on it since Jan 2013. You can do it!
  • I'm quoting an MFP friend here: "maintenance is deficit plus cheating" At least I've found this to be true!
  • Suggest that not everyone wear the same dress. I've been in several weddings where the bride chose a series of dresses (same color and fabric, but different cuts) and let everyone pick which was most flattering. It makes a huge difference, since different styles look better on different bodies.
  • Thin slices of cucumber paired with fresh salsa--kind of chips and dip but less calories and salt!
  • Keep in mind that a gallon of water weighs 8 lbs. There are 128 ounces in a gallon. So it's not actually that hard to have that much difference in water in a day. If you drank 32 ounces of water that's two pounds right there. Add a little extra salt so you are holding on to water (or a little less so you flush more water),…
  • Also make sure you check your IT band. I had a Dr and a PT tell me I had knee problems and would just have to live with them, until my massage therapist told me that I needed to foam roll. Went away within a few days!!
  • ^^this is a great response!
  • Also, good cheese tends to come in smaller packages and is more expensive, so it's a bit harder to binge on.
  • I agree with using stronger cheese, and put it in things. 1 oz of a strong feta in an omelette is awesome! An oz or so of a strong blue cheese in salad, same thing. Get pepper jack string cheese instead of regular. That way you satisfy the craving but don't go overboard. Also cheese is a good one to weigh and pre-log so it…
  • Fantastic--it will be fun when she gets to go with you!
  • The most helpful things for me when I started: 1. Make the decision to not do anything you can't see yourself doing for the long term. For example, I have chosen to not do any "cleanse", etc. since I'm not going to eat that way forever. That way I'm training myself for a new lifestyle, not chasing the loss of a few pounds…
  • It sounds like you have it all listed out here. Eat better foods which give you more energy. Don't worry about "clean eating"--whatever that means. Just eat less crap. Scale back cardio until you get the food figured out. Walk for 30 minutes. Set a goal that you can attain so you don't feel that you've failed. Eat more…
  • What a fantastic thread--you've done an amazing job and I think you have a great attitude about it--I love it when taking a healthy, moderate approach works so well for people. You are also right that it is more a matter of determination to stick to a plan than it is actually hard or even hard work. Difficult, but for a…
  • Yes--you can change inches, pounds, or how your clothes fit (which is somehow for me different than inches--go figure) They almost never all change at once.
  • Oh, and fruit is yummy. I eat lots of fruit and veggies, not because I should, but because I can either have a great big salad with both veggies and fruit and some chicken or I can have a donut. I take the salad for the same calories because it's more filling and I won't get hungry so fast. Don't worry so much about…
  • You always hear about that big loss that comes when you start--10 pounds the first week or whatever. I never had that, but 3 pounds a month (or whateve) will get you there!
  • Just make sure you don't make the common mistake that since you are running you don't have to closely watch what you eat. If I stay active with running and other workouts, I still have to track food. Also, MFP overestimates so if you are eating back exercise leave some calories on the table at the end of the day--maybe…
  • I just had to buy new mid-layer pants for skiing. The old ones were XL and drawstring but when I cinched them up my new ski pants wouldn't button. At least I found them on a good sale--and in Medium!
  • I've seen this stated previously, but it's never quite made sense to me. I can see that walking or other "easier" activities aren't really pushing muscles to repair and rebuild, but if I push hard on a run, I definitely have muscle burn that I equate with microtears and repair of muscles. How is that functionally different…
  • Have you thought about talking to a physical therapist? I know some in my area who do this kind of work in addition to injury work. I just know from past experience that imbalances tend to show up as injury sooner or later so I'd worry about the long-term... Sorry I don't have better than that, but I saw that you bumped…
  • I had times where I couldn't see a difference looking in the mirror and felt bummed--especially if the pounds weren't coming off as fast as I wanted. But I'd pull out photos and look at them side by side and see much more of a difference--it wound up being a motivator for me. I could see things like more definition and…
  • Look at you! Incredible--you've done a great job. Thank you for sharing!
  • I didn't lose any large amount at the beginning. Took a couple of weeks to see much change, but then steady at about 3 lbs/month.
  • Definitely hit a running store and have them take a look at your shoes. If you over-pronate, for example, and don't have shoes for this, it will make your ankles hurt.
  • I agree with this too. The crazy part is that it worked in the reverse, as well. Now that I'm nearing my goal, I'm surprised by how thin I look in photos. Trust, me, that's a first!! You can do it!
