I have a cheap one from walmart...I think it was around $10 and it was worth every penny. It is amazing the weights of some things, and really helps me keep track of my food more accurately. I highly recommend one, you'll use it for everything!

I would choose either a soup or salad from the appetizers. Remember you don't need to get a "main course" most restaurants offer appetizers that are more than enough food.

I have no idea the effect calorie staggering would have, but seeing your example of calories to eat a day...it doesn't seem healthy. I have a hard time with gum, mainly because they lose flavor so quickly that I'm getting a new piece literally every few minutes. There are about 60 pieces in a box, so you're right, the sugar does add up. I quit smoking on August 6th. I drink vitamin water and pepsi. Along with logging food on here I also log what I eat at what time in a diary. I don't bother with calories or anything for the diary, I let MFP take care of that.
