  • I went off of the pump two years ago and couldn't be happier. I have a Dexcom CGM which really helps me to adjust things. My A1C has stayed about the same.
  • Here's an even better site: http://www.hmrprogram.com/index.cfm/Community/Walk-O-Meter
  • You'd have to check your heart rate to find out. It is written to walkers, but should apply to any exercise -- maybe the below article would help? http://walking.about.com/cs/fitnesswalking/a/hearttraining.htm
  • Insulin totally depends on your weight. When I was heavier (and eating more carbs), I took a lot more insulin. How many grams of carbs do you eat at each meal? If you are on shots: Basal insulin is Lantus or Levemir (usually), normally taken once or twice a day. Bolus insulin is Novolog or Humalog (usually) and is for…
  • I'm always curious about this, too. I take 15 units of basal insulin and 15-30 units of bolus/correction insulin. My I:C ratio is 1u:5cb.
  • Bloomington!
  • I am a runner and I use Jelly Belly beans to treat my lows -- lots of runners have Sport Beans, so why not? I buy generic at Sam's Club and the cost is only about .12 per low, 70 calories (15 carbs for 18 beans). I LOVE how well this works for me. JB says that they are gluten free so they should work with celiac (please…
  • At what age and what year were you diagnosed with T1? Age 10, 1992 What is your best A1c to date? 7.0, I just want to get in the 6's club! As a teenager, A1C were often in the 9's. What's your lowest recorded blood sugar? 18 Have you ever been hospitalized due to diabetes besides your diagnosis? Twice -- once in high…
  • Sure, Dan --- what I immediately saw was the cost. Fees for an H-1B application are $325 (application), $500 (anti-fraud), and $750 or $1500 (ACWIA), and $2000 (fee for employers with >50% H-1B or L employees). Universities pay as little as $825, with large businesses paying as much as $4,325. 10-20K would be a huge rip…
  • I'm an immigration advisor. A lot of the information that has been posted has flaws, though HelloDan's information is the closest to accurate (sorry, MFP friends). Coming as a university student is the best option (F-1), but you'll have to prove that you intend to return to your home country. After you complete your…
  • LOVE. Where'd you find it? MUST HAVE.
  • Yes, that's exactly it. Low blood sugar is called an insulin reaction. Everybody check out the diabetes support groups on MFP -- love my type 1 friends!!!
  • Thanks, KLK, for mentioning TAGing. I'd never heard of it before and consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable about diabetes, nutrition, and bg control. This is from the Joslin blog: http://blog.joslin.org/2012/01/should-tag-be-a-part-of-your-diabetes-meal-plan/ Erin
  • Glumetza (correct spelling this time) is a brand name metformin. It has less side effects than metformin or its generics. Maybe ask your doctor about it? :-) Erin
  • Hi Everyone but especially Pinkita-- So I loved my pump and I hated it. Loved correcting in small increments, loved the easy boluses/corrections, loved how it taught me to take better control of my diabetes and make wiser food choices... ...hated the site scarring (even with changing every 2-3 days), hated the "site…
  • I might take 1 or 2 units of insulin (will vary from individual to individual). Your liver can convert the protein to some glucose. So, for example, when I had ham and eggs for breakfast the other day (no carbs at all), I took 1 or 2 units of insulin. Erin
  • Dietician recommended 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat for me as a person with type 1 diabetes wanting to lose weight. She said it is too hard on the kidneys >30%, but don't freak out if I go over 30% a few times -- just don't do it consistently. Said 30% fat will be very hard to limit, 40% is ok. I am going to start…
  • Got my Dexcom after using the Medtronic CGM. Dexcom is SO much better and now I see why people go with the Medtronic pump, Dexcom sensor. An extra device and all the hassle that goes with it, but the accuracy is worth it!
  • Hi Steve, I'm on Metformin (a brand name called Glumexa, not a generic). It reduces my basal insulin (or long acting) from 25 units a day to 12-13 [trying to find a balance still]. No side effects for me, luckily. I've tried Symlin and Victoza also. Victoza is a stronger dose of Byetta and Byurdeon. Erin
  • I messaged jamja72 about Symlin, if others would like the info I'd be glad to share! The downsides for me are coming up from "Symlin lows", and the hassle of setting a watch reminder to take the other 1/4 of my insulin in 30-90min since I've switched from a pump to shots. Not impossible at all, though. And it does cut your…
  • Pinkita, I've taken Symlin (still do, sometimes). Let me know if you have questions about it. I do like it.
  • The Mendosa site is great! Actually it is where I learned of the Brand-Miller books and website.
  • I'm interested in learning about your diet too. Do you have the energy to work out? Does the protein put extra stress on a diabetic's already-stressed kidneys? I read an article the other day that said no more than 30% of your diet should come from protein. Here's the link:…
  • Hi Mary! I was diagnosed at age 10 as well. Welcome!
  • Hi Angel, feel free to add me if you'd like! I've had type 1 diabetes since age 10. I'm the regional captain for a group called Insulindependence that promotes active living for those with diabetes. I'm pretty active, but need to work on my food as I'm about 30 pounds overweight. Congrats on your normal A1C! Don't think…
  • Hi Tim!
  • Hi Tiffany! I've never heard of it.
  • Hi and welcome! Two months and eight days until I'm at 20 years! I am using MDI presently, but have been on a Medtronic Paradigm pump the past four years. Erin
in Hi Comment by type1foodie January 2012
  • I have a Medtronic Paradigm Pump and CGM, but at this moment I'm on Lantus. I get so frustrated with the pump/CGM sometimes. One day I love it, the next I hate it. I'm considering trying a Dexcom CGM, many of my colleagues from Insulindependence have Dexcoms and love them. They are, in their opinion, more accurate and…
