There's toned and tight "thick" in the right places THEN theres sloppy "thick" with a gut. Different people may fall into different categories.. I think its apparent which ones good and which ones bad lol

I do both :) I eat a small portion of protien and a complex carb like oatmeal to fuel me through my training then I replenish my carbs afterwards and take in about 50grams of protien
