  • I was diagnosed with diabetes in January. That was a major shock to me!! I also spent a week in hospital in February due to the effects of a diabetes Rx that I am apparently allergic to. (ugh) My dr says I should be taking Ozempic because of this drug allergy but my employer's health plan doesn't want to cover it and so it…
  • Awesome stuff! That is really great.
  • I too was diagnosed with diabetes when I was in hospital after my heart attack. I was so shocked, and even more shocked when I was given so many Rx (agreed that some were because of the angioplasty and stents). But the Rx they gave me for diabetes was Metformin and I had most of the "rare" side effects like loss of…
  • That is fantastic - good for you! Glad you found something sustainable.
  • Yes, I ascribed to the eat less/move more philosophy -- and that worked for me when I was in my 20s but that is much more challenging now that I am older. Yes, I am using mfp to track my food intake because my dr is concerned that I am not eating enough. I have had no appetite since I was discharged from the hospital a…
  • I recommend you read "The Obesity Code" by Dr Jason Fung. He reviews all the various things we have been told our entire lives, including being made to feel inadequate, no self-control, etc, and destroys them by reviewing long-term scientific studies.
  • re other people commenting on your weight Pre-pandemic when I worked in an office, there was a guy (who had Crohn's Disease) and a long hair blonde woman, who was probably in the ideal bmi range, who were always making sideways comments like eat less, move more and giving judgy side-glances no matter what I ate. Well of…
  • So many inspiring people commenting on here with their paths forward - you guys are awesome, keep it up. Liquid calories have always been my downfall (and I mean soft drinks as well) so I am avoiding all of them on my mfp journey. So far I have been successful. I have a few social outings coming up which will be the…
  • My goal is to get off diabetes and other medications... I had a heart attack on Jan 8, 2024 (I do not recommend it for your bucket list). After the angioplasty and two stents, they had trouble controlling my blood pressure. I was shocked to be told that I had diabetes and high cholesterol (had never been told that before!)…
  • Muscle weighs more than fat, so if you are losing inches but not weight then you are replacing fat with muscle. That's good. Your calorie count seems too low. Was that an average day?
  • Your future ex-husband.
  • You aren't crazy. And those who are saying you are, are being rude. Municipal water does have different tastes, depending on the mineral content. I find some delicious, some blah, and some downright unpalatable. Note that most bottled water is simply water that is bottled from a municipal water supply somewhere. Look at…
  • These buffets are my Achilles heel so I try my best to avoid them. If I can't because of a function, then I try to reduce my calorie intake in the other part of the day, avoid foods that I can make at home but choose not to (eg. pancakes), try to make healthier choices (the salads are often terrible because nobody eats…
  • You folks who are saying "No job" are being pretty harsh. The person might have no job through no fault of their own - laid off, company went under, etc. On the other hand, "no desire to get a job" is definitely a valid deal breaker.
  • That's a great story! You should be proud of yourself. Don't feel intimidated by the number - you just need to do what you have already done, and a bit more. Awesome stuff!
  • Machines stabilize the weights so you are only working a particular muscle group. Free weights exercise your core as well to stabilize your body as you lift the weights. What I find is that it is sometimes difficult to set up a machine so it works right for me. I don't have that problem with free weights, obviously.
  • What I did... - stopped eating cereals, breads, pasta, white rice - stopped buying prepared foods - got rid of all junk food in the house (too hard to have enough willpower!!) + started drinking more water + started eating more fruit + started eating more vegetables + started eating a healthy snack mid-morning (if I was…
  • How fast are you walking? Are there any hills in your walks?
  • In order to understand how to alleviate the pain/discomfort of muscle soreness, you need to understand the cause of it. Typically, normal cell respiration is an aerobic process, but when the cell's energy demands exceed what can be produced by the aerobic process, it switches to an anerobic process. This results in a build…
  • I used to call myself heavy, because I found the term obese to be really demoralizing. But that really was just playing games with words, because I really was obese, probably verging on being morbidly obese. I read that the average north american male wears pants with a 38 inch waist and I used to wear 44s. Now that I am…
  • Congratulations! You're way ahead of me when I first started - self-realization! I got started when a friend gave me a 20 lb challenge, and I thought I didn't need to lose 20 lbs, maybe 5 or 10. I reluctantly started, when my friend started telling other people that we had a 20 lb challenge. Well, I am now on my fourth 20…
  • I had a very similar situation to you. First, if you are flat footed then go to see a foot doctor (podiatrist) and see if your foot problem can be corrected if you are fitted with orthotics. I did this and got orthotics that fit my running shoes. (You should ask your family doctor or pharmacist about that medication next…
  • I second the Stronglifts 5x5 --ESP the beginner info. I think it's important to get your form right before lifting heavy, so you don't injure yourself.
  • Well, just for a contrary view, rI think the money I spent on a PT was a waste. We spent a couple hours running (it seemed like) from machine to machine and he gave me so many different exercises that I needed a book to keep track of it all. Not for me. I discovered a web site called 'strong lifts 5x5' and that routine is…
  • Happy people are attractive, regardless of size. Nobody wants to be with a depressed old grump.
  • Don't sweat so much over the number. When measuring anything, you need to keep in mind #1 the variability of the measuring device (the scale in your case), #2 the variability in what is being measured, and #3 the accuracy of the measuring device. For sure, most scales nowadays use a battery so that could impact the…
  • Don't fret, just start over tomorrow.
  • AWESOME!!! Way to go!!
