  • I agree wholeheartedly. Institutionally shunning someone for their sexuality is indeed petty and it is discrimination. However, CrossFit did not single this person out for her sexuality. She was removed from competition due to the very strong case that she has an advantage over female opponents for having spent about 28…
  • Actually, if she wins and in 10 years it is determined that she had an advantage, yes, the person that got 2nd place and 3rd place, etc are hurt. They would have missed their lifelong dream of winning and huge financial rewards. The fact is, CrossFit as an exercise program is about improving yourself but the objective of…
  • I think that it is extremely premature to make that judgement. This is an emotionally and even politically charged situation. No one wants to limit the rights of citizens through discrimination. But here is the problem. In this instance, if we snap to a decision without full scientific investigation because it isn't…
  • That is beside the point. This is philosophical issue, not an issue with her physical size. What if she was 6' 0" and 180 lbs? Now the situation looks different. Whatever is decided needs to be applicable to all such situations in the future. It needs to apply to all sizes, whether the person in question is or is not…
  • So, should we allow someone born a woman that has gone through the same process to become a man and is doped up on testosterone to compete as a man? All of this gets into some really grey areas.
  • It is a question of fair sport. Chloie Jonsson is 34 years old and had sex reassignment surgery in 2006. There must be permanent and irreversible differences in her body's skeletal muscular makeup caused by developing for 27-28 years as a man. While surgery and hormone therapy may negate the anabolic effects of male sex…
  • Just finished. That was one of the worst WODs that I have ever done. I made it into the 14's. At the end of the 12's, the dread of the next round really started setting in. I ended up with 111. I am pleased with this score and there is no way you could talk me into trying this one again before the submission deadline!
  • Just as last week, today I am taking an active rest day today. I went to the box to try a practice run. With both OH squats and pull-ups, choosing the right shoes was definitely something that I wanted to test. My Reebok lifting shoes help with squats but hinder pull-ups and they throw my weight off when kipping. I decided…
  • This is good feedback. Thanks. I am not completely close minded to it. I have been doing them more as of late and got a PR and find them less frustrating. Perhaps I am coming around to seeing the benefits.
  • In the first year of The Open, there was a lot of elimination on 11.3: 5 min AMRAP of squat clean & jerk, 165 men, 110 women. We had some pretty fit folks that could not get that weight. All that you had to do is one clean to avoid elimination many couldn't get it. I think that CrossFit learned a lesson from this. It…
  • CrossFit Carrboro Carrboro, NC
  • Agreed.
  • I remember that one. Everyone that competes in The Open usually has a breakthrough moment where they realize that they are better than they realized. That was the one I that did it for me. Even though I did terrible, it was really good for me.
  • I am in! 3rd time competing! I wouldn't miss it for anything as it is the most exciting time of year in our box!
  • 14.1 was a boon for experienced CrossFitters with well developed conditioning capacity. This week, I am guessing it will be some kind of elimination ladder. For instance, with 13.1, many stalled on the second round of snatches which allowed for the stronger CrossFitters to rank up.
  • 270, (6 rounds even) exactly double my 2011 score for 11.1. A couple of keys were that I use the exact same jump rope that I have been using since 2011, an original Again Faster Revolution X with an unsheathed cable (they no longer make this version), and I did all C & J's from the very first to the very last rep. I…
  • Buy your own jump rope and have an experienced coach help you size it. IMO, the Again Faster Revolution X is my personal favorite.
  • The original recommendation by CrossFit Headquarters is 3 days on/1 day off, repeat. Of course since most of us don't have 8 day weeks and our boxes are typically closed on Sundays, CFHQ also recommends 3 days on/1 day off then 2 days on/1 day off. Also, the older you get, the more rest that you will need.
  • I wouldn't be too concerned. One day of being 5% off isn't enough to establish a pattern of getting weaker. We all have off days. I could be that you need to rest for a few days and those numbers will pop right back or you may start making gains. CrossFit is funny like that. You may PR your 500 M row and in the same week…
  • Having competed in a lot of competitions (Tough Mudders, long bike rides, triathlons, CrossFit comps, running races) and having made a lot of mistakes, the best advice that I can give is to not make any drastic changes to your diet, clothing or equipment in the days before or during the event. If you have a 6-8 weeks until…
  • When you try to change everything all at once, anything short of total compliance can feel like a failure. If you make a mistake and have a slice of a co-workers birthday cake at lunch, that doesn't mean you have to say screw it the rest of the day and have pizza for dinner and skip your workout. Just take it one meal at a…
  • The snatch jokes are so played out that rather than smirking or cracking a smile any more, I just find it annoying. I am sure there are other little jokes but I can't think of them right now.
  • I am sure that when Sir Christopher Hoy is leg pressing 900 lbs, he is thinking how it is a total waste of time. But all joking aside, I would argue that the weight loss was largely a result of weight training and it's metabolic benefits. So, therefore, if I got better on the bike as a result of weight loss and the weight…
  • I highly recommend competing. A good place to start is signing up for the CrossFit Open this coming spring. I have seen more people learn break boundaries during the month long Open than the entire rest of the year combined. Also, there are tons of local competitions popping up all over the place and many are offering team…
  • Riding my bicycles!
  • We do partner WODs ever single Saturday and often one day during the week. Sometimes, it just makes sense to partner people up that are using the same weights and sometimes we take the slowest and weakest and partner them up with the strongest and fastest. It can be a great way to check your ego and be part of the team. We…
  • Thank you sir!
  • You really are intent on proving your point, aren't you? I don't know anyone in any field of athletics that got worse as something from getting stronger.
  • What works for the pros typically doesn't apply to us folks on MFP, so, I have to respectfully disagree and offer what my experience has been. When I started doing Crossfit which includes a lot of lifting, both low reps and heavy weights as well as high reps and lighter weights, it was a total game changer for my cycling.…
