  • I usually just have chips, but fewer when it comes to sandwiches and stuff. But for my daily required veggie snack, I really like carrot chips. They’re just carrots cut in the bias with a ridged blade, like wavy potato chips. They’re crunchy and virtually tasteless, so they’re really good with dips or salsa.
  • Frozen meals are also nearly universally disappointing in size. I'm by no means a volume eater, but always need an extra bag of vegetables or a bag of salad to round out a frozen dinner. I suggest sticking to plain frozen vegetables and plain frozen meat. Reduces additives and lets you customize the portions to your…

  • I despise cooking for one and do it as infrequently as humanly possible. I rely on take out, some batch cooking, and staples that require more "assembly" than cooking. For takeout, I have a few rules that I set for myself. I don't order appetizers or dessert and limit anything ordered "for the table" to two bites/pieces. I…

  • Prepackaged is rough. For a higher protein snack, I like beef jerky, but that’s packaged. I also like flakes of smoked salmon on cucumber slices with a squeeze of lemon, but again, salmon and cucumbers come in packages. There are lower carb forms of yogurt, but you just run into the same problem again. I can only think of…
  • To get calorie “credit” you enter strength training in the cardio section. Weird, I know. Don’t waste a single second worrying about “starvation mode”. If the body’s response to reduced calories was to keep its fat, no one would ever starve to death, right? Yet probably hundreds of thousands of people all over the world…
  • It might be helpful to remember that we lose fat from all over our body when we lose weight. I think of it like butter on toast. You put your pat of butter on your toast and think it's a good amount of butter. Then you spread it all over the toast and it doesn't look like nearly as much. Weight loss is kind of the same.…
  • I’d also point out that “carbs” are much more than bread/grain type foods. Fruits and vegetables are pretty much all carbs as well, so you can always boost your carbs with some of the more calorific produce items.
  • Cardio exercise is the only place where calories are tied to the entries. Use the strength training entry under cardio and include the total minutes of training time, including rest periods. The strength entries are more of a journal.
  • Sounds like a bad entry. A quick Google shows 149 cal/ 100 grams. This is a crowdsourced database. Check every entry you use for accuracy the first time you use it, or if you haven’t used it for a while.

  • Not a recipe, but I use the Oats Overnight meal shakes. I use oat milk, a scoop of unflavored whey protein and the oat packet mixed up the night before. It’s easy to drink in the car, but also has enough “chew” to feel like breakfast. I’m sure there are recipes online for similar things. I just found that the price of…
  • I think the issue is that MFP is a US based website that doesn’t use salt measured in grams, it uses sodium measured in milligrams, per US nutrition labels. A tenth of a milligram is too small to measure.
  • My mother always said that and I always thought it was hilarious. Until.....
  • I don’t care to cook any more, so a great deal of my diet is restaurant food. I’ve done just fine looking up similar items from chain restaurants and making adjustments on the amount I consume. Worst case, I estimate the type and amount of individual items. That requires a bit of training your eye, but it’s workable. I…
  • The food entries in the database are nearly entirely crowd sourced. You’ll need to check your potential entries against either a package label or an external verified source in order to be sure the entry you’re using has the information you need and is accurate.

  • Nope. And it's not likely people will go off and do deep-dive nutritional research for every entry they make when so many entries can't even manage filling out what's already on the label.
  • I buy the Oats Overnight shake packets and make it with oat milk (tastes best to me) and an extra scoop of protein and have it on my way to work. I find it’s a good blend of the convenience of a shake, with enough chew to feel like it was a meal.
  • I think the problem is too big to even really contemplate. Four trillion anything is such a ridiculously large number, it's hard to even imagine, much less think of as a target to measure change. I may just be in a bit of a bubble, but I also don't see a whole lot of excessively large people or a lack of whatever might be…
  • I personally don't see a population-level change that can be made by an individual, that personal accountability and influencing your children is the only thing that can really be done. What high-level interventions do you see being effective ways to bring about global and societal change that seems to be needed? Or even…
  • I think you have to manage expectations as well. Muscle building is not a days and weeks endeavor, it's more like months and years. A pound or so a month is about the most a woman can put on under ideal circumstances. That of course, doesn't mean you won't get stronger, it's just the amount of physical muscle that you gain…
  • Weight loss is about calories consumed. You can consume them any time you like. Some people like intermittent fasting and limiting the hours that they eat in. Personally, eating dinner is practically the last thing I do before I go to bed. I prefer to eat late and don't eat until whatever work I have to do at home is…

  • I think the question is, what benefit do you think you would gain from premium that would be an improvement to you, over the free version?
in newbie Comment by COGypsy April 2024
  • I desperately, desperately wish I could. I would give a lot to dump meal planning and preparation drudgery. Except giving up variety, apparently.
  • Are you a premium member? If you are, then you probably need to put in a support ticket. If you aren’t a premium member, you don’t have access to the barcode scanner. It’s a premium-only feature.
  • Maybe YouTube videos and a mirror that you can practice the moves without weight as you go? You’ll probably need to figure the names of exercises to look them up though.
  • Ahhh....it's a much slower pace than you're imagining. For one, you typically plan on doing it for a few hours. You also have to go slowly enough to concentrate on monitors and keyboards and not on having to keep up and stay steady on a walking pad. Like you said, briskly walking just wouldn't work. But on Zoom calls you…
  • Why wouldn't you be able to use the keyboard? We have a lot of people at my university that use walking pads at their desks. It hasn't seemed to have any effect on their productivity. From what I understand, it often improves it.
  • I’m a fan of frozen vegetables and meat. Neither require much more than occasionally dividing a larger piece. No peeling or chopping or whatever people do with fresh vegetables. Other than snacking vegetables (that come pre-cut) and bagged salads I probably haven’t used a fresh vegetable in months. Frozen has a wider,…
  • No need to cut out carbs whatsoever. Keep in mind that this is a message board of interested amateurs, so take what might be useful for you to try and leave the rest.
  • Have you come across Living Well with Gastroparesis? It was an amazing resource when I had gp. The lady that wrote it and runs the site finally ended up getting the pacemaker type implant and has had amazing results, if I remember correctly. I had idiopathic gastroparesis for a couple of years and it was a really rough…
  • Frozen is generally as nutritious as fresh, as long as it’s plain vegetables, not sauced. Canned vegetables are already cooked and can be high in sodium.
