  • Ortlieb if you can. They aren't cheap, but they are wonderful. Having only one doesn't throw me off at all. Think about how close it is to your wheel. It doesn't stick out far enough to change your ride.
  • If you are new to this, try looking into Adventure Cycling. The have trips where they haul your stuff and all you do is ride. I've done several, including a two-week Portland to Canada trip in 2014. I can't say enough good things about the organization. www.adventurecycling.com

  • I use a MagicShine. It's amazing bright, and uses rechargeable batteries. I commute every day, often in the dark, on unlit bike paths. For about 100 bucks it's amazing. • Me too. They're free. Except I admit I think it's weird when I get them for my daily 8 mile bike commute.
  • As a "serious" cyclist I use two cycle tracking programs. Strava, making use of speed and recording elevation gains, gives me the lowest calorie burn numbers. MyFitnessPal reports almost double what Strava does. It's hard though, because how heavy your bike is, and the rolling resistance of your tires make a huge…
