Take it as a complement, maybe they think you just don't need to lose weight ;)

Just try seeing what you're eating at first. Whilst you may think you're eating small portions, you can, in reality be consuming 3,000 calories a day. Just cutting that down to something like 2,000 kcal will allow you to see some improvement.

Seeds, fish and lentils are pretty high in protein content. If you're still struggling, you could try supplements like whey.

The main reason is it's a lot easier than eating all the time. Let's say you want 5x 30g protein servings a day, you'd have to eat 100g of chicken every couple of hours which, for many people, is pretty impractical, protein shakes are a lot easier :)
