I've been relying on FitnessFrog so far - http://www.fitnessfrog.com/calculators/tdee-calculator.html The theory runs that 1lb of body fat has 3,500 calories in it. If you eat under your TDEE by 500 a day, that's 3,500 weekly and you'll lose a pound of fat. If you eat 1,000 under, that's 7,000 weekly, so 2 pounds. Bear in…

Usually so it tastes nice, and we'll buy it again, really. Thinking of store-bought salad, there's usually some mix of salt, fat and sugar in there to enhance the flavour and encourage a repeat purchase.

Sheffield resident here... Dragged up in the grim north, etc etc.

#18 it's in my house - my lego dinosaur and Tetris lamp.

I'm in!

My profile picture is a lego T Rex in front of a Tetris lamp... I don't put much effort into hiding it!

They are the best. Perhaps throw in a lifted-hug. That is, until you get someone's nose in your solar plexus.

6'9" male here.

Very tall, reasonably heavy guy here - 6'9", 250lbs. My heart rate strap regularly says 1000+ kcal per hour - I only use it for cardio, rather than strength training. So 20 minutes gets me easily 400, sometimes more. Which conflicts with what the app suggests. I don't know the formulae used, so not sure which to follow. I…

You're welcome! I spent a long time trying to figure it out too.

I understood it that the TDEE assumes you will have rest days - I commit to 3/4 days of exercise, which it counts as moderately active. So on the rest days, I'm still moderately active within that week, and next week I would recalculate it. So no, you wouldn't need to change it every day.

I have been doing it, yes. However, this is because I want to promote logging everything - knowing me, I'm likely to stop logging bigger and bigger things once I let myself stop! And because I'm sort of interested in keeping an eye on vitamins and that. I tend to do it as part of recipe-creation, so it's not as if I have…

I quite like designing and inputting myself - sort of reinforces the whole process for me. And I've included some fields that MFP doesn't use - TDEE, BMR, that sort of thing. Ill attach a screen shot when I get home.

This is never easy to talk about, so good on you for opening up. Counsellors will use a certain method/theory - it sounds like yours is focussing on solutions rather than processes and cognitions. Have you discussed with them how you feel about the sessions? This is the absolute hardest thing to do with a health…

Ah, I am just nerdy enough to start my own spreadsheet! It's at home, or I would screen shot a copy. I've gotten a bit mad wih graphs and formulae too. Sweet website though. Thanks for the link!

Changing is always a thing to bear in mind. Even switching days, or style of lift - mixing it up keeps you interested in it, and works the same muscles in differents ways I read something a while ago about 'surprising' your muscles - different routines, different orders. It's a benefit in terms of growth and training - I…

Thanks for these! @baborka - I like your idea. Perhaps patience, consistency and some self-discipline are things I lack. Over my first month, I've shed roughly 22 pounds which seems extreme. I had worried about any lasting changes I was maybe putting into my metabolism, so putting some extra thought into it seems healthy.…

A gratuitous self bump... Though I know it's hard to encourage people to read the wall o' text.
-
Yep, they certainly were the encouragement for me to get involved!
-
Sir, thanks for the initiation. I shall receive in true geek style. Awkwardly, reluctantly, and wondering if you're talking to me or the person stood behind me.
-
I will read this with interest. Prime is my hero.

It's from XKCD - he's a very funny man, I cannot take any credit for it.
-
Nope, you're not alone. The barcode scanner in the MFP iPhone app is almost a game to me. I can think of actual games I've paid more money for I've enjoyed less. I cook a lot, so finding alternatives and learning more about nutrition adds an extra element to it. I'm currently designing a spreadsheet that will compare…

As ever, XKCD has beaten me to a joke better than I could come up with... I'm a geek, but I use that as short hand to say 'I don't seem to like what the majority likes'. I'm sat between my tetris lamp, my comic books and my violin, waiting for Steam to update, and, yes, also trying to lose weight. I wanted to join in!

I weigh in early Wednesday mornings. So wake up, use the toilet (depends which number, in honesty), do a few test runs on the scales without looking, be in pants, step on, wait a few seconds and measure. Then take weekly photos and measurements of self. Seems to be working so far.

This is interesting to me. I can comfortably sit at 400 calories under my allowance on a non work out day, and I eat well. On a workout day, my heart rate monitor says I burn between 800 and 1000 calories. So I can end a day under half of my allowance. I use protein powder and am a decent cook so I know the nutrients are…

That's a good point about the risk of dropping. I involuntarily moved my foot when unread it! For me though, the only time I've actually pulled something at the gym was using the odd cable machine. I put it down to an unusual posture and having little control over the movement.
-
That should work. 6'8 guy here, so I naturally have a fondness for tall people! Keep on going :)
-
I'm a tall guy, and I find that the weights machines aren't really set up for me - I'm forced into an uncomfortable posture and the movement seems to stop before I fully extend my wingspan. Just a thought if you were similar to me. I much prefer free weights for recruiting your stabilisers. It's the little things.

Yep. This just makes me really hungry.
