Usually so it tastes nice, and we'll buy it again, really. Thinking of store-bought salad, there's usually some mix of salt, fat and sugar in there to enhance the flavour and encourage a repeat purchase.

Sodium is an essential nutrient that exists naturally in our food. We need a certain amount of sodium in order to survive. However, some foods have higher levels than others, and some have sodium added for flavour, particularly processed foods.

Anything that has to be packaged and/or shipped needs to have preservatives added to it. then they add salts and high sodium spices to cook it. I tried to buy precooked frozen chicken breasts the other day, and there was 550mg sodium in one breast. UGHHHHH. It's crazy, and I am not the best cook.;(

Label reading in the store has caused me to put several items back on the shelf! If something is 41% of my daily intake, NOT IN MY HOUSE!!!! I try to steer clear of processed foods, sodium causes me to retain water like a sponge. Water retention causes my BP to go up. This means lots of cooking from scratch at home.

One food manufacturer had the salt(pardon the pun here) to say that the American palalete wanted more salt! Needless to say, I do not buy there products!
