  • I either have an egg with some sort of greens and/or homemade oven fries, preferably sweet potato or a protein and fruit smoothly. I make the oven fries by slicing a potato ( white sweet potato is preferred) into longitudinal 1/4 inch thick slices, misted with olive oil and baked at 425 for 25 minutes. For a change I might…
  • I cook whole chickens and they come out falling apart tender. I also cook tons of beans. In fact I often use my giant canner to cook enormous batches of beans to can or use as roasted chick peas. Try corned beef with veggies, delicious!
  • What does your ortho think of you running? I can't imagine that it's going to do a "not normal" ankle any good. I had a neck fusion and C-7 fracture years ago and had to give up running for my PT test in the Army. Pain ( not just discomfort) isn't good and shouldn't be ignored. You may need to find low impact exercises…
  • I do a lot of You-tube yoga. I did quite a few classes first, though. Check out a studio. They often have great prices for drop-ins or one month memberships.
  • I drink sodas on occasion and also sparkling, flavored water without sweetener. I do find the carbonation seems to satisfy hunger quite well. I only drink about 4-5 per week and often don't have any for weeks. Now,coffee I drink a lot. If I quit coffee I would get rid of at least 100 calories a day in milk. I'm not willing…
  • You probably can't change your wife but I would insist that you both change your daughter's diet. She's your daughter, too and you have a right to input into how she's raised. Your wife may or may not change. Do you do the cooking at home? If you start cooking that could help. For restaurant food, could your daughter just…
  • I make a "Reese's" smoothie. 1 cup almond milk, 1 cup plain yogurt, 2tbs PB2, 1-2 tsp cocoa, vanilla extract and stevia. One scoop protein powder. I add ice to thicken and blend. Coffee is a good substitute for the almond milk, btw.
  • 61.5". I have about 40 more pounds to go. I'm trying to get down to 105 for my joints but I may not get that far. I've been on an upward climb for a long, long time with some partial losses mixed in. Now I have a serious joint disease so no more excuses! I'm eating 1200 per day and I'm finally starting to lose. Wasn't…
  • Beans and veggies. I sometimes eat 200 grams of spinach or chard either wiled or in a smoothie. I roast chickpeas with chipolte peppers, garlic and lime powder. Low cal for a great snack! My husband chows on them.
  • Increasing my protein, decreasing carbs has helped. I find protein shakes extremely satisfying compared to my previous choices. I wasn't eating much protein before, though. Usually I was at 25 grams or less before concentrating on my macros. I also think eating enough protein has reduced my bloat and my stomach is looking…
  • 61.5", 146.8 lbs. trying to get down to about 108 but am losing terribly slowly. At this rate, it will take 84 more weeks! Men and big people are so lucky! I've been dealing with injury and joint problems so maybe when I can workout more things will improve. Planning to use a personal trainer in August and also do a nice…
  • Pigeon pose is awesome for ITBand hip and knee pain! Shin splints are either overtraining or bad shoes. Go to a real running store or podiatrist. You may need better shoes or custom orthotics. For the pain use ice and ibuprofen or aleve, if you can take it. Freeze Dixie cups of water and rub them along your she, peeling…
  • Snail mail probably works best. Send them a letter and they will probably send you a coupon to replace the ice cream with any flavor. My husband has done this a couple of times and the companies really respond.
  • I gained weight eating clean. I'm now counting calories while eating fairly clean. Losing slowly but steadily. I did lose a bunch about 10 years ago doing South Beach diet by the book. That's really clean and healthy since I only ate home cooked meals and all whole foods.
  • Juicing is seriously low in fat and protein. Not really as healthy as people claim. While it's loaded with nutrients it's also 100% carbs. It is low calorie if you don't drink too much but I can imagine a huge muscle loss. Heart is a muscle so not good. I would juice as a nice beverage and veggie/ fruit boost but I think…
  • Magnesium actually has a mild laxative effect. I seriously doubt that it helps " inflammation" but it is an important mineral that many people are deficient in. OP- have you had your body fat checked? I think you're either going to need to lose body fat or gain muscle. It's that simple.
  • Mmm! Love mango, chile plus lime juice. In Mexico, they serve any fruit sold on the street with lime and chile.
  • I just downloaded the Ideal Protein diet book. Interesting. I don't like all the processed food and the fact that everybody eats basically the same amount. I do like the low-carb concept and I've found that I lose much more easily when I limit carbs. I also find protein powder extremely useful while dieting.
  • I used to have really nice arms, back and lower body when I was working on a horse farm and lifting heavy wheelbarrows of manure, hay bales, grain bags and big show saddles. Plus all the stall cleaning, walking to and from the arena, and riding. ( great core strength). I was also doing cardio at the time, though. My body…
  • Eating too little, exercising so hard, you are losing bone and muscle. You may not mind or notice it now but 20 years from now you'll be breaking bones just from running or falling down. Plus, do you ever plan to have kids? Such a low body fat and low calorie diet can lead to infertility. You also slow the metabolism down,…
  • For me, hip weight is the slowest to go. Even when I weighed 100 pounds and ran cross-country I had hips and thighs that appeared chubby. Despite wearing a size 2 in most clothes at the time. My jeans get tight in the thighs if I gain a little weight and it's the last thing to lose as I lose weight.
  • I go to a few specialists and they always weigh me. Even the hematologist who sees me for my blood clotting problem.
  • I agree. I never recommend very low calorie or fad diets. I could have made a ton of money doing this when I had my own practice, too. Most doctors are acutely aware of malpractice concerns which is part of why our health care costs have soared.
  • How much money does your doctor make from prescribing/monitoring you on your diet? If it's a cash program, which I suspect it will be at your weight ( insurance usually won't pay unless you meet certain obesity or health criterial), than the HCG diet is a huge money maker for the doctor. Sad to say but the HCG diet has…
  • What I read is that Asians eat a thin, broth soup or other low-cal method of taking in the agar-agar, like maybe an aspic or jelled broth. They then have appetite suppression so that they eat less at the meal. They are getting some fiber and mild laxative effect.

  • Baked in parchment paper. Add some fresh lemon, garlic, salt and pepper. Wrap like a present in parchment paper, cook at 350 until barely cooked through. Let sit about 5-10 minutes and serve. Also good with a mango salsa.
  • For really good, fresh salmon, I prefer it as ceviche. Just make a pico de gallo with tomatoes, onions and jalapeños, some cilantro and a good amount of lime juice. Add the salmon, cut into bite size pieces. The lime "cooks" the salmon. Give it 2-4 hours in the fridge before eating.
  • Here's some info and recipe for lacto-fermented: http://www.culturesforhealth.com/lacto-fermented-turnips-recipe
  • My mom used to serve them mashed as a potato substitute. I like them better than cauliflower mashed. Lacto-fermented- just add salt to sliced turnips and leave on the counter for a few days to a couple of weeks. May need to add some water and will need a weight to keep them below fluid level. They will get a delightful…
