I guess it depends HOW naughty and how long for.

Definitely layering but be smart about it. I think the easiest mistake to make wrap up to when you are cold and not consider how warm you'll get once 20 minutes into a run. Rocky looks the part with his long joggers and hoody, but if I went out like that within 10 minutes I'd be sweating like I was in a sauna. I tend to…

Listen to the series of podcasts "Brain-Body Breakthroughs" by Larry McCleary MD. His series of podcasts attempts to debunk many modern medical myths, much of his focus is on diet and nutrition and how much of our understanding of modern medicine is wrong. A lot of the debunking usually points to flawed science and poor…

I used to use a forerunner 305 for the bike and running (you can get a handlebar mount for the forerunner). Now I use an ageing Motoactv which does everything I need. When that dies, I plan on looking at the garmin 500 or 510. All I need is the gps/cadence/HRM. I wish I could justify the extra for the higher models as I…

You could just rely on the MFP guestimates for calorie burn. Its probably going to be more accurate than your HRM with tachycardia.

I do a 45 min cycle to work in the morning, then same again at the end of the day to get home. I do this 5 days a week. I'm still here after 4 months of doing this and feel fitter and healthier than ever. As for safety? well, cycling is fast becoming an extreme sport round these parts, with all the dodging car drivers and…

I've gone running at 240lbs, so you have nothing to worry about. Just make sure you focus on the correct stride (basically "learn to run", a bad technique could easily jar your joints and lead to all the problems you worry about) and get a good pair of running shoes that are suited to your gait. Get to a decent running…

I find that exercise that relies on building core strength has helped to "tighten everything up" around the middle (not intentional, just a side effect of having rock climbing as a hobby). Basically my gut is held in check by the muscles around my core/stomach area. When I really relax, it still all spills out :o .

We use ziplock bags for lots of things. I once bought a few tubs with two sections so I could make my own TV dinners! I used to put Veggie stew and millet mash in them and just throw the whole thing in the microwave when I wanted them. When I used to work away I'd make a batch of stew on Sunday and take my dinners for the…

Great job, make sure to keep us all updated.

Considering all the people saying walk don't run, would the OP be better off starting by maybe swimming until the weight comes down? low impact and a great all over workout.

Every time I see a photo of myself. Anyone else noticed how a camera adds about 40lbs?

I've been vegetarian since 15, way back then it was a lot harder, these days with a lot more health food shops and products in the supermarkets its far easier. I'll echo the advice to make sure she gets her multivitamins and minerals, and make sure she takes them religiously, its easy to forget and find yourself anaemic or…

As well as having my weight YoYo for the last few years due to thyroid, I'm also a hoarder, so I'm finding all my old clothes I used to fit into and wearing them again as I'm losing the lbs. I still look at my suit I wore for my graduation and wonder if I'll get to fit into it again. I guess there's a goal for me to aim…

+1 for dcrainmaker BTW!

Why not get a garmin forerunner 15. GPS, HRM, pedometer, cheap as chips (at least as far as gps running watches go). Saying that, if you run with your phone, why not invest in a bluetooth HRM, and just use the phone to do it all? something like runkeeper or Strava will record the run and integrate the HRM and GPS data into…

Withings pulse has an Optical HRM. Fitbit do clips. There's also the Misfit Shine that can even clip into a necklace. As for HRM, there are lots of Bluetooth HRM's that will connect to a phone and you can use whatever appropriate app you like. I have a Bluetooth Adidas MiCoach HRM that works with my phone, but Wahoo and…

Climbers suffer massively from callouses and we don't have the luxury of gloves. I remove them not for vanity, but because they are painful after a while and if left too long you can get what are affectionately known as 'flappers', this is basically when the callous tears from your hand and you are left with a flap of skin…

I've struggled for years, the only time I've successfully lost anything was a health issue, so take my advice with a pinch of salt. But at the moment I'm on a 23lb losing streak due to commuting by bicycle daily since June. Even though I'm burning an additional 1400 calories a day I STILL HAVE TO WATCH WHAT I EAT but it's…

I listen to podcasts or Audio books when running or walking. When cycling it takes enough attention just to cycle safely on the UK's roads what with pot-holes and car drivers who seem to think that bikes are only 6 inches wide.

I have a very small bum-bag (fanny pack?) just big enough to hold my phone (nexus4) and house keys, nothing much else. Its small enough that its not much more than a belt. A few running shops do belt things that will hold a water bottle as well as your keys & phone

Latex? I meant Lycra! Latex is a whole different outfit that's got nothing to do with running :embarassed:
-
Layer up, keep your ears and hands warm (beanie and gloves) and make sure you warm up properly. I wear a thin fleece gilet when its really cold (not sure of temps, but cold enough to freeze water). I've never been one for thick joggers, I prefer the latex type running trousers (ron-hills anyone?, almost like yoga pants I…

I don't bother... then I feel guilty and enter a few days later. I'm the same with recording my weight, almost as if not recording an increase makes it not real. I do it anyway these days and convince myself the scales are broken on the days I put on a lb or two (they work just fine when I'm losing weight ;) )

If you use MFP, then get something that syncs with MFP automatically, thats the only real advice I have. I'm keen to try the Polar Loop, but the only thing that puts me off at the moment is STILL no syncing with MFP. This does multi sports, even connects to HRM, only downside is lack of MFP integration. I had a Jawbone UP…

I've been using MFP for several years now, I lost lots and thought it was the exercise and healthy eating, but it turned out to be an overactive thyroid. With treatment it then went underactive and I piled most of what I'd lost over a 12 month period back on and then an additional 10+ lbs within the space of about 2…

Well done! I know what you mean about people not noticing. As long as YOU can tell, that's the important part.
