I've struggled for years, the only time I've successfully lost anything was a health issue, so take my advice with a pinch of salt. But at the moment I'm on a 23lb losing streak due to commuting by bicycle daily since June.

Even though I'm burning an additional 1400 calories a day I STILL HAVE TO WATCH WHAT I EAT but it's note like I'm on a diet, I can eat whatever I like as long as I don't overindulge. It's amazing just how easily those calories add up at meal times. The exercise just gives me a cushion and means I can eat a reasonable amount without worrying too much about going over my daily calorie goal (plus I just cycle home the long way if I've eaten too much to burn off another 400-500 calories).

It's a challenge at the moment now Autumn has arrived with a vengeance, but I'm still sweating and I always arrive with a huge grin on my face after passing 100's of cars queuing in the rush hour traffic. It only takes maybe an additional 5-10 minutes over my car commute so not a huge amount of extra time and I don't need to spend hours in the gym as I get my workout on my commute.

For me, exercise has been a big help. I typically burn 900 to 1000 calories 6 times a week, and end up eating about 2500 calories. It's gotten to where I need to be careful about making sure I've eaten enough, as I'm just about at my goal weight.

Dont see it as a DIET then you cant fall off the wagon
See it as a lifestyle change, and just do little changes at a time, so it is not so overwhelming, remember, diets come to an end, and usually the weight creeps back on, but a lifestyle change is about making better choices, just log everything you eat, say for a week, and then look at the diary and see how you could improve it.
I am no expert, infact anything but, however i am human and love food, but have had to make some serious lifestyle changes, but like you previously i have felt like i was some how deprived of my favourite foods ( cheese etc ) but actually i just factor everything in i like, and its no hardship at all.
Its about moderation and motivation i guess, and some days are easier than others.
    Good luck.

If you can only stick a diet for a few days then you have probably given yourself an unsustainable plan - e.g. restricting calories too much, eliminating individual foods or whole food groups, etc.

Set easier goals that you can stick to. A realistic goal is around 1 lb per week. You'll only need to create a 500 calorie deficit, which can be through eating less, exercising more, or a combination of the two.
