  • If you have enough time at lunch, I agree with the person who suggested using that time to add some exercise to your day. Even a simple walk at lunch time could be helpful! I'm also about to join you in this situation...I'm starting a new job next week and it's going to involve three hours per day commuting by train. I…
  • I almost always eat a string cheese at about 9:00am.
  • Congrats to you! I've experienced the same thing where dresses are too big through the shoulders, so I need a size down. It surprises me every time, I guess because I expect the size to be most different in the waist area.
  • Yes, I log meals in advance. Personally, I don't feel that it does me much good to eat and then log because I'll likely go over my calorie limit that way. If I plan ahead, then I can make sure I stay at the right level for calories. If I stray from my meal plan then I make adjustments. I usually plan my meals the night…
  • You'll be surprised how much you hurt tomorrow from the seat...not just your butt, but also between your legs. I think it's fair to warn you. I was shocked after my first spin, and then again when I went to the second and it hurt to sit back down on that bike. All that said, though, I love spin class now that I'm used to…
  • Pinterest posts stating that drinking a smoothie full of fruit, veggies, yogurt, and peanut butter will make you magically lose weight. Yeah, maybe if you drink that and absolutely nothing else. Calories are calories, dudes, even if they're in the form of a delicious green smoothie.
  • I've wondered about this, too. I know I can run a 10 minute mile outside fairly easily, but if I set the treadmill to this same speed I feel like I'm running my little heart out and can't do it for very long. It's frustrating.
  • I stopped buying the flavored oatmeal packets a long time ago just because I figured out I could have a more filling meal for fewer or comparative calories by using a tub of oats and adding to it. If you flavor it yourself, you control how much sugar goes in and you can use tastier fruit instead of those weird little dried…
  • I don't have room in my home for an elliptical machine or I would likely save up and get one. Instead, my purchase has been fitness classes and a gym membership. A smaller purchase that has helped a ton is my kitchen scale. I think it was about $25. It helps so much in keeping your portions at the correct size.
  • Happy Herbivore is a nice vegan blog where you can find recipes using nutritional yeast. http://happyherbivore.com/recipes/?page=1&i1=nutritional+yeast#recipe-box
  • Give it a try if you're interested, but I'll warn you that I personally cannot stand the stuff. It has a really strong smell, and I also didn't like the flavor when I used it in a vegan "cheese" sauce. If you go to a grocery store with a bulk natural foods section, you should be able to buy a small quantity to try it…
  • I just noticed your comment about fostering as sort of a trial run. I had a friend who did this a couple years ago, and the dog ended up going back to her original owner after my friend had her for six months or so. I cannot describe how heartbroken my friend was when this happened. She didn't realize how attached she was…
  • This is probably obvious, but just keep in mind that even if you get a breed of dog that usually likes to run you could wind up with a dog that just doesn't want to do it. I have a miniature schnauzer, and other dogs of this breed that I've known love to play fetch. Mine couldn't be less interested. Dogs do have their own…
  • Let's see. I'm 137 pounds and 5'6". Recently I've been buying dresses in a size 6 (US sizes), but I'm sure that will vary from brand to brand. I've yet to figure out my new pants size. I haven't bought jeans yet, but at New York & Company this weekend I seemed to be a size 4 in dress pants. The fit was a little weird,…
  • I have a very basic understanding of this stuff, but I think the aftertaste your talking about is from the tannins in the tea. Do you drink wine? It's like the aftertaste from a heavy red wine. Or you might just be brewing your tea too long and that's affecting the taste. :)
  • Celestial Seasonings makes an herbal peppermint tea that I like. I think it's pretty common to feel that hot tea tastes like slightly flavored water when you first start drinking it. The only green tea I really like is sold in loose leaves at a local tea shop in my area, but I've had better luck finding nice black teas in…
  • All the pizzas I've tried are delicious, and there's a ginger chicken dish I also like. My favorite is the spinach mushroom pizza; I've added a link to the Lean Cuisine page for it so you can check out the nutrition. I find it to be filling enough to be my entire lunch...to me 340 calories isn't shabby for a full meal.…
  • My new ultra simple lunch is Trader Joe's hummus snack pack. It's $1 per pack and includes a generous serving of hummus and some pita chips. It's pretty high calorie (320 I believe,) but filling enough for a full meal when you don't have time to actually fix something. I like to add some baby carrots and/or an apple, too.
  • I tall skinny vanilla latte is 100 calories. It's always been my go-to Starbucks drink. I honestly can't tell the difference taste-wise between a full fat and a skinny latte.
  • I like to go for a chicken tostada or enchilada, and there is one Mexican restaurant in my neighborhood that offers a good black bean soup. I used to order a cheese enchilada, but at this point that much cheese makes my stomach hurt. A tostada still lets you have a bit of crunchy shell if you like that, but with fewer…
  • Well, none of my pants fit at the moment so I guess new pants are my reward at some point. :)
  • Oh jeez I remember my first spin class. I expected my butt to hurt, not between my legs, so I was in for quite the surprise. The second class was a nightmare (it was two days after the first), and then by the third class the following week it still hurt enough that I asked the instructor if I was doing something wrong. She…
  • I recently had my body fat composition measured in a Bod Pod. The Exercise and Sports Science department at the university where I work offers this service, although the rates differ for the public and for employees. You could try googling Bod Pod and your city to see what results you receive. A gym may have this service…
  • I also workout in the morning before work, and I don't like to have a lot of food in my stomach while exercising. I usually eat a piece of toast with peanut butter before going to the gym, then afterward eat a container of greek yogurt at my desk at work.
  • Here's the recipe I use for salmon, from the food blog Budget Bytes: http://budgetbytes.blogspot.com/2011/04/ginger-salmon-765-recipe-255-serving.html
  • I've only lost 10 pounds, but my bras are already feeling loose in the cups. Of course I've heard of that happening, but I didn't expect it to happen to me since I didn't exactly start with a large chest (36C).
  • I use it in place of mayonnaise/Miracle Whip when I make a tuna sandwich. It seems more nutritious to me and tastes great.
  • Doritos. I never buy them, but they show up at parties sometimes.
  • I like a small treat after dinner, and that's usually a sugar free popsicle. I also keep sugar free hard Werther's candies around for a little sweet treat. I also like to have herbal tea late in the evening.
  • I'm only a week in, but I'm trying to give up eating just because I'm bored. I would snack on crackers and cheese for no other reason than I was bored and it sounded tasty, but having to account for that extra food by logging it each day is really helping.
