I've found that running styles can have a bad effect on knees, even if you have the best of shoes. Before I really got into running, I noticed that my heel would strike the ground first. This causes the the knees to take a hard hit. After reading many articles, I started to see a trend where experienced runners were…

BabyGrlRae, I've heard of the Nike+ but I've found something that has very similar features minus the music. I just bought a Garmin Forerunner 305 and used it for the first time this past Saturday. It keeps track of every thing you could think of i.e. Distance, pace, time, laps, heart rate etc. You can also upload to…

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the encouragements. I'm sure I can do this but I am a bit nervous about it. I have a training schedule put together by Hal Higdon. It's an 18 week schedule. I'm starting it early since I have 22 weeks before the race. I do plan on running a couple of 5K and 10K's as part of my training. mkeithley, I…

Warning, this is a long read.. Anyone training for a marathon? Would you like to share how or why you decided to register for one, or planning to? I started running on a treadmill last December, before I even heard of Myfitnesspal website. I was looking for ways to lose weight, and I wanted to get into weight lifting to…

RK... I purchased a MIO (no strap) at Walmart back in January and I thought it was fine at the time, but I came to realize that I needed to keep checking my HR every time I changed my level of workout, otherwise the calorie count would not be accurate. I forgot to do that on more than 1 occasion and it became a hassle. If…

I just ran my first 5K on the 12th. I didn't follow any plan. As a matter of fact I signed up for it on the spur of the moment kind of thing when I realized I ran 4 straight miles outdoors for the first time this spring 2 weeks prior to the race. Before that I was just running indoors on the treadmill and the machine was…

From a weight loss point of view, I believe you want to count calories. This determines whether you gain or lose weight.

Good luck Banks, don't run the day before the race and have a good carb meal the day before. I ran a 5k last week, but I'm not nearly as fast as you. I did it in 31 minutes. I probably could have run a little quicker but since it was my first race I just wanted to make sure I could complete it with out stopping so I paced…

It's actually quite sad.

That's a good start. Longer distances will come soon enough if you keep it up. Get your self a good pair of running shoes so you don't get injured or discouraged before you even start.

wildkitty, The pros of a chest strap: Constant heart rate reading. More accurate calorie burn count as opposed to a push button type monitor. Cons: Strap a little uncomfortable at first but you get used to it. You can't get a HR reading unless you have the strap on. A little more expensive then strapless monitors. The…

I second that. I have the Polar F11 too, and the features are very good. I comes with a chest strap and gives you a constant HR reading automatically as opposed to some other monitors. I purchased a Mio originally but I found that constantly checking your HR with it was very inconvenient, especially when I was running as…

Today I'm feeling proud of myself. I completed my 1st 5K Race in 32min. The weather was 39 degrees and raining the whole time. But actually once I began to run I didn't even notice the rain, or the cold for that matter. It only hit me after I finished when I started shivering. What a bunch of great people at this event.…

This is copied off the manual for the F11 Using the Polar Heart Rate Monitor in a Water Environment Your Polar heart rate monitor is water resistant and can be used when swimming. The fi tness heart rate monitor is not, however, a diving instrument. To maintain the water resistance, do not press the buttons of the wrist…

As a general rule: Take 220 minus your age to get your maximum heart rate. Example a 27 year old, would take 220-27=193 maximum heart rate. You don't want to reach this rate unless you want to go into cardiac arrest. You should try to work at 70% to 80% of your maximum heart rate. Example someone with a 193 Max HR should…

I'm up for the challenge. I signed up for a 5K run this Saturday. I've been running for about a month now (indoors). A couple of weeks ago we got some nice weather and I decided to run outside on some trails in our neighborhood. I took my GPS to see how fast and how long I could run and to my astonishment I ran 4.2 mies.…

dawn66 Try this site http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/activities/2.html, on the left side of the page, click on HOME ACTIVITIES and scroll down to MOVING FURNITURE and click on it. This should give you some idea of what you could possibly be burning off. Look around the site for other things that might fall into the…

Has anyone changed goals after being on here for a while? I started here on this site at the beginning of Feb . But I really started trying to lose weight and tone up back in December. My weight back then was 220. I'm currently at 207 but made it as low as 203 just a week or 2 ago. The funny thing about this is, that when…

I'm no expert on this but I would think that the goal would be to stay in that zone through out your exercise as much as you can. But it really depends on what you're doing. For instance if you're doing intervals or weight lighting you might be going in and out of that zone. If you're cycling or running it might be easier…

KanCrav, You're always going to be burning calories. But some people believe that if they work extra hard (above their target zone) that they're going to be burning more calories. That's not always the case. That may be ok if you're doing things like intervals where you go all out for about 30 or 60 seconds and then cruise…
-
Hi KanCrav, The way I've heard to figure this out is to take 220 minus your age to figure your "maximum" heart rate. Your "target zone" should be around 70 to 80% of that for best results.

I have a Mio wrist heart rate monitor and I too find that it reads different than my treadmill at home. I trust it more than the treadmill reading because it tends to be more in line with other activities I've compared ti to online. Does the one you have give you a constant reading as you're working out? Just curious…

The enchiladas are pretty accurate (about 325 cal each). I might have over estimated the rice and beans. It looked liked like about 1.5 cups each. It could possibly be a little less but not by much. I was just jesting about the sabotage. But I was shocked at the total calories involved. My wife is a great cook and I pretty…

I was walking past a co-worker this morning and he say's "Joe you're looking older". Just like that, no emotions, just matter of fact comment. I replied thanks and kept going. Some people are just... people I guess. Go with the flow, don't let it get you down.

Man, I blew it today. I had a good breakfast this morning. Then my wife made enchiladas with rice and beans for lunch (left overs from last night which I didn't eat because I was working out late). I had no idea what the calories were going to be. But after I ate, I started to log what I just finished consuming. I was…

Ok, so I'll just put it in as cardio then. I did that at first, but I was trying to keep the 2 separate. Thanks for the replies everyone.

Hi, can anyone tell me why calories burned don't show up under activities for strength training like they do for cardio? Why can't I enter calories burned manually like you can when you do cardio activties? I'm new to this site. I've just started about a week ago and maybe I'm just missing something? Thanks.
