What's the perfect heart rate when you are working out? I'm 27 and I've been trying to keep it between 165 and 171.

That's high...almost over your zone. It's good to get it up pretty high, then let it come down, then bring it back up, etc...keeps your heart healthier than just staying at a high rate. I've also heard it's better for losing weight.

Check out this site for a chart: http://www.roxfit.com/fitness/max_heart_rate_train_zone_chart.htm
  • I have no idea about heart rates. I have a a lot of the same questions. But my heart rate hits 150 and \i feel light headed and have a headacke for a while.

    As a general rule:
Take 220 minus your age to get your maximum heart rate.
Example a 27 year old, would take 220-27=193 maximum heart rate. You don't want to reach this rate unless you want to go into cardiac arrest.

You should try to work at 70% to 80% of your maximum heart rate.
Example someone with a 193 Max HR should aim to work out between 135-156 HR. You could go higher or lower but this would be considered your "target zone". It's hard to maintain a target zone but that should be the goal.

Professional athletes work at near maximums, but they get paid to do that:tongue:

    Ok, you're both right.

Kaiyacali is 27 and has 20lbs to lose

Christine is 35 and has 80 lbs to lose

    That's a big difference guys.

Kaiyacali should be able to raise her HR higher than Christine. K is working at 80-85%. C is working at 75-80% at 150 bpm. Both of these are fine. If Christine feels uncomfortable working at that rate, go down until you are ready. Even just 10 lbs ago, I had a very hard time working at 75-85%, now I'm better at it, but it's still hard.

Intervals, like nopogal said, are great! You will see improvements faster with them.

Here's another site for calculating HR - you have to know your resting HR though:

I've found that if I keep it in the 150s, it seems too easy, and I end up pushing harder.

My heart rate is always high. Even when I'm walking its around 160. I've seen it get up to 190.
I'm not exactly sure if this is bad for me or not. It is usually at a constant 185ish for the whole time I work out. Is this okay?

    Bumpity
  • That sounds high?
My resting heart rate is 53. I have to work real realy hard to get it to 150.
