  • Thank you! I laughed out loud and that made my day.
  • Essentially, what slocyclist said. You're going to be short 3 chain links on the new 28 cog - which may or may not be a problem. If your chain already had a decent amount of slack then you may get away with it. If not, you'll notice the tension pulley (lower spring-loaded gear) pulled out towards your crankset with the new…
  • Another vote for lunges and core work. Obviously, anything that works the quads, glutes, and core for obvious reasons. The lunges and squats made very noticeable improvement to my hill climbing routines. I would add stretching/flexiblity to the list as well. Flexibility = Aero = Less Drag = Distance.
  • Two primary components to sitting: @ss and saddle. Secondary component: position/form. Your tail bone shouldn't be sore at all as it should never touch the saddle. A "normal" type of saddle sore would be solely on your sit bones. Are you sitting too far upright (leaning back) by chance? Proper riding position usually means…

  • I'm not an expert (not a racer) but I looked into another wheelset like you. There is relatively little benefit in upgrading wheelsets compared to the rest of the bike or your gear. The only exception is an entirely dysfunctional wheelset or the rest of your bike/gear and form is heavily upgraded and optimized. While it is…
  • Duly noted although my Louis Garneau gloves are doing pretty good so far. My shoe Pearl Izumi covers are neoprene and entirely windproof so it makes sense.
  • Standing, fast-twitch muscles = More power, less endurance Sitting, slow-twitch muscles = More endurance, less power I try to anticipate gearing and shift slightly ahead of time - even if it means some spinning. I stand up on short hills or just the latter half of a long climb. I focus a bit more on pedal upstroke while…
  • The issue is bike fit. Your hands shouldn't be numb in 20 minutes. You're putting too much weight on your hands and/or the angle of your hands is incorrect. You've already discovered the cause and solution: When you shift your weight back (remove the weight from your hands) blood flows back to your hands. The numbness goes…
  • Interesting you said that. The radio program I listened to addressed that aspect as well. A known fault of all current bicycle and other helmets (EPS foam) is that they don't protect well from concussions. This is due to a sort of energy absorption threshold in the EPS foam. Basically, it's an all-or-none effect with…
  • Safety-wise, all major brands of helmets meet the same safety standards (which, I believe, is Snell). 99% of helmets are made from EPS foam. This hasn't really changed in something like 20-30 years because no one has found a more effective material. Designs change a bit but they're functionally the same for protection. A…
  • This may blow your mind: They make blue jeans just for cyclists. Levi's Commuter 504's, for example. Lycra-like stretchiness, suitable cut, reflective materials, and even a loop to carry your bicycle U-lock lol. Have you considered the local metro/bus system (if available at all to you)? The buses in my city have bike…
  • Type "Winter Cycling" into Google. Click the "Images" tab at the top of the Google page. That should give everyone a good idea of what we're discussing here. Plenty of pics/diagrams of cyclists loaded for bear. Definitely more so than I would tolerate for sure
  • Price ≠ Quality Most people want to pay as little as possible for a quality/function - not the opposite. You can pay $100 for the same shorts you can buy on clearance for $35. I've bought awful shorts and fantastic shorts and price didn't correlate. I found the Amazon ratings a better (but not perfect) indicator. I still…
  • Wow, total bummer. Sorry to hear that - I've been seeing the new stories all over the media. Stay safe out there.
  • Understand your body will heat up fast. Thick clothing is a no-no. You start off cold for the first 10-15 minutes but you should be fine if dressed right. It's about layering lighter layers and knowing that wind and water are bad (including sweat and wind from movement). Gear should let you easily dress down/up (i.e.…
  • I second Optimum Nutrition. You can pick up a tub of it on Amazon. The one part I politely disagree with is the "side effects" of the flavored types. It is not a "weird" artificial sweetener - it is Sucralose aka Splenda. Sucralose is based on common sugar but processed so you can't digest it (similar to insoluble fiber).…
  • Re-read the context of their question. BMR plus activity level was implied in my answer. They wanted to know whether to subtract additional calories from the results of their HRM. You would not subtract calories from the HRM results before inputting to MFP. I answered in the context of the question as MFP adjusts BMR by…
  • You get what you pay for on Cervelo - which is a lot. Cervelo had some issues here and there but you see that with all companies time to time. Overall, the bikes are well-built and of exceptional (aero) design. IMHO the best bikes out there. I love Specs but not the same way. Not sure about the 13 clearance. Ask your LBS…
  • Congratulations on your "oops". I'm sure you'll be very satisfied with your mistake  I'm sure either bike would have been a huge upgrade. Now get out there and ride - about to walk out the door myself!
  • I think I may be mildly attracted to you after that statement :flowerforyou:
  • Thinking the Scott. 29'r. Looks like a good Fox front shock. Scott also appears to include a remote lockout which is nice. Better hardware on the Scott in general. I'd avoid the Giant in this case. The Giant has notorious issues with the rear shock failing. Nothing attractive on the Giant over the Scott.
  • Above what you would have burned doing nothing. In MFP go to Add Exercise -> Search "Zumba" -> Add "Zumba" fitness -> input time and calories from your HRM. MFP may estimate calories once you input time but just type over the estimated calories. HRM should be more accurate.
  • This just made my day
  • Amazing. Needless to say, that's almost unheard of these days. Enjoy that ride
  • I'm not an expert with the HRM so I'll leave that to Beatpig lol. I don't subscribe to the "healthy food" doctrines. No such thing as healthy food. Just a healthy diet. I would suggest reading about "If It Fits Your Macros" aka "IIFYM". I currently run a 35% carb, 30% fat, 35% protein diet but that's because of weight…
  • Try Amazon, read reviews. A major brand in the US is Pearl Izumi. Mostly quality stuff (not all of it). Shorts are very good, though. I usually expect to pay about $35+ USD for a good set on sale so maybe about 15 euros. No pair of shorts is worth $100 USD/50 euro. None. Keep in mind that bike shorts aren't the only reason…
  • You can't just say you're having a bike built and not give specs, man! Granted, I'm sure it has the latest SRAM Red 22... Why Planet X, anyhow? Might be something I'm missing since I'm stateside.
  • Okay, last update. FYI for anyone else who encounters Cyclists Palsy. Had my hand surgeon/orthopedist appointment today. He confirmed it was in fact Cyclists Palsy. In fact, he knew it almost right away which was a start contrast to my general practitioner. Regained about 50% of my strength back in just the last two days…
  • Like Beatpig said, the fundamental is still calories in and calories out. Find a comfortable bike and ride on a regular basis on flat ground at a reasonable pace. Have fun, enjoy it. That's really it - it's that easy. Seriously. You can make it more complex and add in all the gear, specific nutrition (although, hydrate…
