  • Great. Thanks for bumping. This will be very useful...
  • I love porridge oats and oat bran and alternate these with eggs and bacon for breakfast. I make my own compotes so have fresh fruit to go with the oats but control the sugar content. Oats keep me regular too! I thin’ I have become addicted to them...
  • Playing in a show this week so after show bar sessions. Determined not to drink. Any suggestions for non alcoholic but low sugar. Diet tonic with lemon comes to mind!
  • Sorry meant exercise not “excessive”!
  • This is great advice..... try starting at around 1600. Weigh everything and check portion sizes....stick on this for at least three weeks and see what happens. If you do excessive log it but don’t subtract the cals..... if the scales stay the same try cutting back 100 cals a day and see what happens. Unfortunately this…
  • Home alone tonigh so had salmon with harissa paste, broccoli and rice noodles. 3 glasses of water and one cup of tea. oH comes home from a rehearsal and immediately said “would you like a glass of wine”. I said “no!” Rather more forcefully than I intended but he didn’t ask again and the force of my remark made me feel…
  • I know what you mean about drinking to numb pain - I am trying to find other ways of managing it... for example, a hot water bottle at night to help with hip pain. I am trying to cut down a bit on painkillers too and working out what is the min. I can get away with... good luck and there is nothing wrong with lurking. 144…
  • btw, one positive in a funny way is that our recycling takes place once every two weeks, I noted that there is more newspaper than wine bottles in my recycling bin so that has to be good! Still thinking up a strategy for tomorrow night when OH is in... at least when I refused the extra bottle last night he stopped drinking…
  • You are all cheering me up. I lapsed yesterday and need to be a lot stronger when husband is tempting me with wine, he poured a glass and I started drinking it without thinking. Half a bottle later he tried to open another one claiming that some had gone into the meal when he was cooking. I said no.... not proud of myself…
  • I am now trying to do without them and am trying to walk as exercise but it is hard! The pills did help because they got me used to eating lower fat which did help. lesscookies 12, thanks for your honest reply and I am pleased that you got through this. Did you build up your walking slowly. I can manage two 15 minute…
  • Glad you are finding it so entertaining. try being in constant pain, unable to exercise and with an unsympathetic consultant when desperate for an operation. Some of us have real difficulty losing weight under these circumstances. I have been very sensible whilst on theses pills and they have helped. Try walking (if you…
  • I am taking a vitamin supplement. I have tried dieting without the pills bylowering the fat intake so the actual farmer input is the same but it doesn’t seem to work so well. Difficult because I want to try and manage without the pills. I need to see the go to get another prescription so was trying to do without.
  • Having roast chicken as my main meal today and will probably have two glasses of red wine. Factored into my cal allowance and then back on the wagon tomorrow... will need to stay off the cocktails though!
  • Probably true, but I do need to get moving and it will have to be slow steps...... in spite of the imminent weather I intend to start tomorrow! Can always walk indoors around where I work. Lots of corridors and stairs!
  • Thanks everyone. Still dieting and even managed to climb up from a dinghy onto a yacht on holiday and go sailing. Slight setback with right knee after the holiday but continuing on the weight loss. Your comments have been very helpful...
  • Reading this with interest. I have a desk job and need to walk more at lunchtimes. I have a bad left hip so have a stick. Slopes and stairs are hard but I can manage flat walks. Wil start slow say 10-15 minutes and see how I go. I do need to start moving! Thanks for the inspiration
  • Thanks, just bought that one so looking forward to trying.
  • Habits are hard to break. During weekdays I used to come home and have a g&t with hubby and then wine. Now, in that fateful period between coming home and dinner ( around 2 hours) I ask him to make me a strong cappuccino with his beloved Expresso machine. I sit and talk to him and then go and take a long bath. This breaks…
  • Very interesting posts. I can't wait to get the hip op out of the way and my life back. I agree about yoga! I have tried it and it helps a bit but again people keep pushing me to the limit. Gentle walking is about all I can do and some stretching. It is so frustrating. Stairs are a nightmare......I have recently set MFP to…
  • I love biryanis! If eating out I drink lots of water to curb my appetite, eat half the biryani and then quite happily have the other half for breakfast on a Monday morning. I also try to save calories for a weekend by eating slightly less during the week. Agree about Sundays too. .. Almost tempted to treat Sunday evening…
  • It can be done... I have a really bad hip and it is very painful. I am 58. I have lost two stone (28 pounds) in a year - very slow progress but at least in the right direction. This has been mainly without exercise. My Fitness Pal has been really helpful. I have also cut back a lot on alcohol and the extra calories saved…
  • I lapsed on Saturday whilst taking my lovely niece out to lunch. We had a 3-hour lunch and I had a campari and soda and we shared a very nice bottle of wine. I felt bad about it later but I have to say I did enjoy the "treat" - and that is one way of looking at it.. Maybe for me the way to deal with this is moderation…
  • I did not drink Monday but went to an orchestra rehearsal. Dinner at Turtle Bay with one of my best friends. She had a glass of red and I had non-alcoholic ginger ale. About half way through the meal I really started craving her red wine and found myself thinking "one glass would not hurt". I resisted and the temptation…
  • Hi everyone. I did not have a dry January because I was on holiday - but, I drank a lot less than I would have normally done and had a really good time. 3 weeks in the sun was just what I needed and friends who had not seen me for a year were so encouraging. Now into February and not drinking much if at all on weekdays.…
  • I had a belated birthday dinner at home last night and knew I was going to drink some wine. That was fine. It was a decision I consciously made and I was happy with it. . I also got a tall peroni glass that holds a pint of liquid and filled it with water and drank from that too. When hubby suggested a second bottle of wine…
  • I find that by pre- planning my food for the day I can see how many cals I get to without wine and then how many by having it. This helps me to make an informed decision. I wasnt y too good over Christmas but will find this a useful technique in the next six months. I am not cutting out completely but definitely cutting…
  • Daily - if I see a weightgain I am more careful the next day...
  • PS, I am taking a break from work for 3 weeks and will be downloading the book and reading it carefully.I have been fairly successful in cutting back and am trying to reduce gradually. Going cold turkey does not work for me. Negatives: My hip pain is worse without booze as the painkillers are not good enough! Positives: I…
  • Hubby at home most of the week so not drinking is a challenge. It is easy not to when he is out. However, got home from work last night and asked him to make me a lovely cup of coffee from our new Expresso machine... Then I had a bath. Then a meal. That stopped the fatal, "chat, drink and snack time" which, although…
  • Add me - I have lost 20 lbs slowly and my target is another 20 lbs and I need to do this by summer.
