I'm always tweaking my workout schedule due to work/family commitments. I have 3 children involved in athletics, a job of my own, and a husband who's job can be unpredictable at times (meaning he doesn't always get out on time and can have evening meetings). As a runner, it's a bit easier for me. I've gotten up and out as…

Now, I like the tools with pink handles because then the hubby and kids know that they are MINE and that if they touch them there will be hell to pay!!! I keep my own tools so I don't have to waste half my day searching through the disorganized mess on the work bench.

I just want to applaud you! I had twins (they are 14 now) and nursing just didn't work out for us and I have enormous respect for any woman who manages it!
-
I have never walked during a half. I even carry my own water (I like to drink on my own schedule) and run through the water stops. I've seen other racers doing the walk/ run intervals though. It all comes down to personal preference.

I agree with the others. Definitely lift heavy things at the gym. Find a beginners lifting program like Starting Strength, Strong Lifts, Strong Curves or New Rules of Lifting. Use the personal training session to make sure you are using proper form and have fun!

I would skip the rice and the tortilla as neither of those holds much appeal to me. I would toss LOTS of chicken, onions and peppers on a salad with a little bit of cheese and lots of salsa. Yum!

You can cut your meat costs by buying an entire or half a cow from a farmer and having it butchered. Find some friends to go in on it with you.
-
If you have room for it, contact a local butcher and ask if they have freezer orders available. I save some $ by buying larger quantities of meat at the butcher. I prep it and freeze it in meal sized portions.

It's the "healthy" convenience foods that add up. But, in all honesty, they really aren't necessary. We eat a very healthy diet and I don't buy any of that.

I have to disagree as well. Apples are 1.49lb, 2.49lb if you buy organic. Fruit snacks are like $6.00lb (2 boxes)

You could ask about a standing desk. One of my coworkers built a platform for his monitor so he can stand while working. I would love that, but then I would have to wear comfortable shoes to work instead of heals.

I change my profile pic for the OP. My story - I've never been overweight, but I have given birth to 3 children, 2 of whom are twins. My first pregnancy I gained 60 pounds and had a 9lb 8oz baby. My twins were full term and 6lb 7oz and 6lb 15oz. I was enormous!!! I know I was blessed with good genetics in that I don't have…

What are you doing on your off days? The day after lifting or a long bike ride, or if I went out and didn't get enough sleep, my run suffers.

I just realized that in your original post you have 3 hours after work to cook, do chores and "chill a bit". That, right there, is your work out time. Busy people who prioritize health and fitness sacrifice "chill a bit" for exercise.
-
Can I ask - why does it take you an hour to get ready for work? You can most likely cut some time there. I have a full time job, a house, pets, 3 kids with corresponding athletic and academic activities and a husband (who has a crazy schedule and does not do daily household chores, plus you wouldn't want to eat anything he…

Way too much! For a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 teenagers), if you include the cost of the CSA, we spend anywhere from $300 - $400. That includes paper goods and toiletries. ETA: We live in the North Eastern USA

I am always hungry after work since I get home around 6 and need to cook dinner, and many times we have kids activities to attend before we can actually eat dinner. I plan for a snack. I have cheese and crackers with some veggies or peanut butter with an apple while I am cooking. It keeps me from hitting the chips and from…

You can go to the high school track and set up a play area in the center for your child while you run laps. My kids would kick a soccer ball around while I ran.

I also run because I love it and am training for a half in October. Here is my schedule: M - Weights T - Run W - Run (short) or Cycle (whichever I feel like doing, usually cycling if the weather cooperates) T - Weights AM, Run PM F - Rest S - Cycle S - Long Run You could run on Wed and/or Sat, but my body prefers it when I…

I like the running with a stick idea. It's a useful tool against dogs as well. eta - There is an older man in my area that runs with a stick and he put bright orange tape around the bottom. As cars are driving by, he will hold it up to get the driver's attention. It may work for you.

Congratulations! You can definitely do this. And, as a mother of 14yo twins (boy/girl), it does get easier. I found that once they slept through the night, life was good!
-
To avoid complaints from the masses, I let each person in the family pick 1 meal a week. That leaves me 1 night for leftovers and 1 night for take out/going out. (I also bring leftovers for lunch but there's usually enough for leftover night, and if there isn't we do breakfast for dinner)

The frequency and intensity of my migraines lessened after my second pregnancy. But, I don't think that's a solution for everyone. I find that as long as I eat well (processed foods trigger me), exercise, and get enough sleep I do pretty well keeping them at bay. When I do get one, Excedrin Migraine works well.

I also work 4 10 hour days and come home to 3 teenagers who need to eat and be carted off to hockey, basketball, cross country practice. The only way I can get a workout in is to do it at 5am. The alarm goes off at 4:30 and I use the bathroom, put in my contacts, brush my teeth, and out the door I go. M-W-F I go the gym…

Personally, I don't love the yolks so I do 1 full egg with 2 egg whites for scrambled or an omelet. If I am having a fried egg, I make sure to break the yolk and cook it thoroughly.

Um, I think you meant that they are not vegan. They are vegetarian.

My advice is to skip the expensive plans and prepare your own food. Even if your kids aren't on board, you can still cook for yourself. (btw, you are the one cooking and if they are hungry enough they will eat what you provide them. They may complain, but not getting everything you want is part of life. IMO), When you get…

I do both. If I am training for a race, I only lift 2x a week instead of 3. I wouldn't expect any huge gains in your lifts, but I find that keeping my legs strong helps my running. Strong legs means you can pass people on the hills.

It depends on so many things, the weather, how hard I worked out the day before, the distance, etc. That being said, an easy run is about a 9:30 mm, a long run around 10:00 mm, and a fast run between 8:45 and 9:00 mm.

For recipes, I would google the Paleo Diet. I don't follow that diet, but there are some amazing recipes out there and they use all fresh ingredients and it's mostly low on the Glycemic Index since they don't eat grains or sugar. Nom Nom Paleo, in particular, is good. Good luck!
