I wouldn't risk open water swimming on your own, too risky if you get in any sort of trouble. As already stated, the bike is the key to any triathlon, being efficient enough to ride and conserve energy enough to run hard off it is the goal. Good luck with everything.

Just my opinion, but I would work on my weaknesses. So if I was you, it sounds like you'll be able to get through the bike and run ok but at the moment you'd fail the swim. So concentrate on swimming. If you can only swim once a week, that will have to do. Just try and relax and focus on your form. If you can squeeze…

Nice blog, good luck with it. Scary about the neighbourhood shooting.

Congratulations, and good luck for Louisville. Hope the weather is kinder. Nothing like finishing your first Ironman ( just finished my 5th last Sunday ) - it's magical.

Good luck for your sprint at the end of the month.

Would love to do Lake Placid. Frankfurt and Lanzarote are amazing races.

I'm probably guilty of saying this when I do a sprint triathlon. I've certainly never said it in regards to other people and their efforts / aspirations. I've had dozens of people contact me this year talking about their first sprint, oly etc.....after reading something I wrote. I encourage each and every one of them…

Even if you finish last you've still beaten the millions of people that are sat on their backsides doing nothing. Embrace the fear, turn that nervous energy to your advantage and use it on race day. I've come second to last in a half ironman last year ( saddle sheared off less than 2 miles in, so rode 54 miles without one…

A sub 12 Ironman. A norseman finish. oh and if we are daring to dream big, Kona qualification.

tri top and shorts, makes bathroom breaks easier. Sometimes wear calf guards, and running shoes with elastic laces, no socks if below half ironman. Cycling gloves and sunglasses. Cap on the run if hot ( I burn easily )

Looks a good week. I'm returning to training this week after a week off post Ironman. Walked 3 miles briskly to work this morning and will run home tonight to see if my legs work. Bike tomorrow, swim wednesday and thursday, run wednesday and bike friday. Run at weekend, am away so no bike.

Not rushing at all, I went from my first sprint to my first Ironman in 11 months....granted that's not a normal path but I've done 4 now in 5 years and never looked back. You need the support fo loved ones though as the training hours are immense, it can put a strain on everyday life if you don't have that support. Good…

Great stuff - a couple of people I know did it last year and they raved about it. Good luck and hope you can train this weekend without getting snowed in!

Well done both! Hope the stricken runner made a full recovery, very scary.

swimming lessons / masters sessions are the way to go. TI book / DVD also helped me when I was first getting into swimming, made a lot of sense. I always swim with ear plugs, it's a balance thing - at the end of open water swims I always used to stagger around drunk and fall back into the water, someone suggested ear plugs…

Good luck Drudoo for the race this weekend. I like doing brick sessions - probably more psychological, as it lets me know that I can run off the bike. Two weeks back I did a 7 hour brick ( 5 hr bike and a 2 hr run ) as part of my IM training, the thought of it wasn't good but to be honest it flew by ( still took 7 hours…

The passing rule doesn't really apply here in the UK. I've raced in the USA and it confused me at first, but I got used to it, never once heard it said over here though in a race. But if you stay into the side it does make it easier for people to pass you, or if you are passing people just be aware of traffic, and the…

I tend to find out what my A race will be giving out at feed stations and start to train with that months in advance to get my stomach used to it. Using High 5 here at the moment, think that's just UK based but have used powerbar, SIS, Gu, hammer, nuun etc... in the past - all pretty much the same apart from taste. I'm not…

Crux - yep might be a UK thing, but I have plenty of Ironman friends that put allsorts in their special needs bags - pork pies, sandwiches etc... what ever works for you is fine - nice to have something savoury after all that sugar. I tend to use soreen maltloaf as it's light and I know my stomach can tolerate it. Whatever…

I'm in the UK but have visited Germany many times over the last two years. I quite often come home with running shoes / gear. Check out the national chain http://www.runnerspoint.de/ Although you may find better bargains at Karstadt sport, Galleria or Sport Check. I'm pretty certain that they all have branches in Nuremburg.

I agree that a good mix is the way to go. I'm training for long distances but I throw a sprint session into the mix each week, as doing intervals or sprint repeats will help with my flast speed. I don't want to be a 100m sprinter but I know that doing this will bring my minute per mile pace down, which will see me run a…

I've had some pretty dark thoughts at various stages of the Ironman races that I've done. Usually a stern word, or a positive spin on the situation ( ie: it's not a marathon, it's only 4 10ks and a bit ), a cheer from the crowd or a word from my Dad, as was the case at Ironman Germany kept me going. I also try and sing a…

Welcome to the group, and good luck with the triathlon training. Is there anything specific you'd like to know?

Some cracking training being done by everyone - nice one! Totals so far for the month: Swim: 8 miles Bike: 150 miles Run : 70 miles

Swimming has gone out of the window so far this week as I have an infected eye-lid ( conjunctivitis type thing ). Ran 30 miles so far, and done 2 turbo bike sessions. Big day planned on saturday with a 5 hour bike, quick transition, and a 2 hour run. I expect to sleep well saturday night ;-) Hope everyones injuries heal up…

well done everyone. Hit all my goals last week and started this week off solidly with a 2 hour run before work.

Open Water swims all the way for me, which is a complete 360 from when I started and the thought of jumping in a cold, dark, deep river / lake terrified me. Swimming in a pool is pretty dull ( IMO ) and I have the added complication of being highly allergic to certain mixtures / levels of chlorine, which saw me…

Not essential for your first tri, as others have said. Swim suit / shorts and a bike jersey / running top. If you get into the sport then invest in one. I personally prefer a two piece tri vest and shorts, purely for the fact that when racing long, it's easier to have a toilet stop. Good luck with the training
