I have been told that I "look like an Olsen twin" when I was at my thinnest. I regained some weight later and my brother told me, "yay, you look like a normal person again!" This was when I went from being at the low end of normal weight to the high end of normal weight. Oh gosh.

This absolutely rings true for me. Though I don't have children, I have seen kid's menus before. They are not exactly healthy! I would not blame a parent for giving their kids something deep-fried or fatty when eating out because almost everything on a kid's menu is that way. There aren't really child-sized salads or…

Good luck on your journey! The best way to have a healthy diet is to up your intake of fruits and veggies, in my opinion. However, simply weighing less will help you very much as well and if you're watching calories and exercising, that is more than half the battle. :)

This. I'm a vegan so I eat lots of veggies and fruit because, well, yum! But I also eat things like Luna bars and burritos at Moe's. I think the idea of whole foods in abundance + processed food in moderation has been working very well for me.
-
I personally don't agree with their recommendations because, like you said, eating 2 servings of fruit pretty much puts you over. If you limit yourself to say, 25g of added sugar or refined carbs, you will be very healthy. Fruit doesn't count, imo.

We didn't evolve to eat cow's milk either but lots of people drink that and enjoy good health :P Not to say "omg red 40 is super healthy for you"... but the natural argument doesn't hold much water. Really, we should base our understanding of healthy vs. non-health-promoting foods on scientific research, not on what our…

Hey! When I first went vegan I didn't really like very much vegetables either. I found out later that I liked them if they were cooked a certain way (for example, if the veggies were in a burrito, or a stir-fry with a flavorful sauce), and I found out even later than that that my taste buds had adjusted and I actually…

Yeah, a good way that some people do it is to calculate their TDEE, and then multiply it by 4/5. That's the amount of calories you need to eat to steadily lose weight. This site'll do it for you: http://www.fitnessfrog.com/calculators/tdee-calculator.html

Agreed. I sometimes eat 40+ g/day and when it's too much... I notice. Lol. Either way, I don't think fiber is actually digested, it just goes through your system and helps move things along. So as long as you're comfortable, have at it!

I need help. :( I get so torn with these sorts of threads because I actually love the taste of a lot of the "healthy low-cal" substitutes, but it's so funny to see the parodies. xD And I understand the ridiculous nature of assuming a taco wrapped in lettuce is infinitely superior to one on a corn tortilla.
-
...is it sad that I'm such a cauliflower addict that that actually looks pretty good?
-
I agree that lettuce tacos are really yummy. If you prefer the traditional shell though, there's always eating them in moderation; a good way to do it would be to only pick up one or two tacos, then go home and eat them so you're out of temptation's path.

Eaten in moderation is fine. They do raise cholesterol but there's nothing wrong with having a few eggs a couple times a week. :)

Out of curiosity, would the idea that people are distinctly predisposed to muscle gain, fat gain or leanness challenge MFP's general principle of calorie restriction being the tool to control weight? If some people just have it harder than others, wouldn't they need some form of customized plan? Or is calorie restriction…

I agree, normal to feel this way, also normal to really quickly get over it when you realize the feelings aren't productive. I have never pointed out someone overeating, but I have pointed out people eating things that are very unhealthy for them and after a short while I realized that they were not exactly ecstatic to…

Awesome! I hope you enjoy ^^

A good way to get those last necessary calories, ironically, is to eat something processed. Processed foods are generally designed not to make you feel very full - so you can eat a controlled amount and top it off with whole foods for satiety. I found when I just started out and was going to eat 1200 a day increasing was…

Maybe tea would be gentler? Black/green tea still have caffeine. But if those didn't work, I've heard caffeine withdrawal symptoms go away in about 3 days... so if you had to quit coffee you'd bounce back pretty quickly. Best of luck!

I agree that you can still be a heavy vegan if you eat convenience foods or eat too much. I used to recommend veganism as a weight loss diet because I used to be a slender vegan (I lost 20ish lbs when I went vegan), but I gained it back later. Now I think it's best to just eat whole foods as much as possible and, of…

I eat a light breakfast because it helps me to portion. I tend to overeat when I skip breakfast.

I mix everything up. I am a one pot meal kind of girl.

1. tofu 2. spinach 3. black bean 4. sweet potato 5. onion 6. swiss chard 7. blueberries 8. pecans 9. barley 10. mushrooms

Grain is not the only plantfood that can be produced in high yields, that doesn't even make any sense. I agree with you that grain is not the most nutrient-dense food in the plant kingdom and should not be eaten in excess for optimum health, but where is her evidence that there is no way to sustain a world of vegans? Vegan…

Whoa, you're eating a ridiculously low amount of calories! Are you reporting everything or are there really frequent days where you only eat 500-800? Maybe eating a higher quantity of food will make you crave 'rubbish' less frequently and you can use moderation.

I weigh mine every time I go to Publix because my scale at home sucks, lmao. So around once a week.

Watch out how much you trust that book; it cites Wikipedia multiple times and says a lot of things that are downright not true. Not saying everyone should be a vegetarian or vegan, but that particular book is not the height of reason.
-
I don't have a clearly-defined goal, but I always seem to end up with around 30-60 grams and that's not a problem for me. If I ate more calories I'd definitely ramp up the fat; the only reason my totals are a bit low is because I am eating a relatively low-cal diet (1410/day) and to be able to eat a reasonable volume of…

I agree with this 100%. I signed up for an online nutrition course recently and could not handle the constant bickering between vegetarians/vegans and paleos. Even as a vegan who is interested in health and nutrition I was equally annoyed with the people who were arguing my own diet's alleged magical health advantages. I…

Cucumber slices are really great imo. Also, you can make lettuce wraps. Fill with any veggies you like, and then spread hummus!

From what I've heard supplements do not have to be tested at all or approved before they are put on the shelves. So they can offer a -bit- of peace of mind, but really you are best off simply eating more nutrient-dense food. Leafy greens are very iron-rich, sesame seeds are high in calcium, etc.
