  • Grandma seems to have some pretty solid advice there. She's a lot older than you and probably done a lot more living and observing. At some point most people think that their parents don't know how things work, and then you become one and go "Oh, wow they were right". I'd be willing to bet there is some wisdom to what…

  • Posts like is make me want to cry. Don't rinse your beef. Why take all the delicious flavor (psst, a little secret, FAT is what gives things flavor. Don't believe me, go ask an expert http://www.esquire.com/features/what-ive-learned/julia-child-quotes-0601) Fat gives things flavor. - Julia Child I'm awfully sorry for…
  • Not sure I see the point here? If it was on CNN or MSNBC it would make the article MORE true?
  • Sugar is sugar.
  • It's possible, though I don't think so. I'm not bitter about my traditional role being chipped away. In fact I do pretty much all the cooking, a lot of the cleaning, all the yard work, all the car maintenance and care, AND am the sole bread winner. My wife is a stay at home mom. What I get annoyed about is not about the…
  • Yes it makes sense in the traditional roles that it be set up that way. Everyone gets a good deal. Husband works all day and then gets to come home and eat and relax, the wife takes care of the house and kids, but as a general rule is provided for and doesn't have to worry too much about things. It was similar in most…
  • Yes, the science is failing you because the science you are using is wrong. Ditch the chronic cardio and start lifting some heavy things. Weights will do more to shape your body than any amount of cardio. Eat more. You're eating far too little and your body is rebelling. You're probably also causing some insulin issues…
  • hard boiled eggs (not they do not increase cholesterol, eat away!) pork rinds/cracklins berries nuts meat cheeses There are a multitude of things to eat. I just personally stay away from soy completely, I believe it to be complete and utter garbage. I just eat high fat and protein with low carbs.
  • Portion size is one of those things that drives me insane. Packaging is purposely deceptive to make you think that whatever the package is (bowl, plate, etc.) is ONE serving, and then you might look at the nutritional info and find out it's 2.5 like was pointed out above. I can understand more, on let's say a bag of potato…
  • I agree with you 100%, government always has a way of getting too involved and controlling everything. We've seen in European nations with their fat taxes and such, and the US is getting to that point in some areas. I suppose I should have qualified my remarks with "In a fantasy land where the government would set up a…
  • I think that it would be nice to have this information, as many times you have no idea what you are eating. My wife has SEVERE gluten issues (though not diagnosed celiac) and having an ingredients list is more helpful than anything to us, and many times we've been able to get that information when we ask (we've had to stop…
  • If you have a gluten sensitivity it can cause issues with your thyroid and also leads to overall systemic inflammation in the body, which can translate into added weight. If you have found that this is working, don't stop as you may see a spike in symptoms you never noticed before if you introduce gluten again. I…
  • Peanut hands down. Almond comes in 2nd, the rest are just meh at best to crap at worst (I'm looking at you pretzel M&Ms!)

  • There seems to be many reasons that weight lifting is great for everyone, including women: 1. It appears to increase insulin sensitivity, which in turn better regulates insulin and blood sugar. Stable blood sugar leads to less fat storage when not necessary, and in fact the release of stored energy. Combining weights with…
  • I've found over time that your average nutritionist or dietician is a complete idiot that has been spoon fed the recommendations of the USDA, FDA and other government agencies (here in the US anyway) and can't objectively look at research and come to conclusions other than "You need to eat grains!!". The advice they give…
  • Mirrors are pretty much standard equipment in gyms with free weights, and it should be that way. I can see not having them in other areas of a gym, but I think that they are pretty essential. You can use them to check form, flex (or practice flexing, which is an exercise in itself really), check progress, etc.
  • Nothing ever tore up my body like running did. I only do interval training now alternating sprints and slow jogging and all the issues I used to have from running all the time stopped such as shin splints, aching knees, hip and lower back pain. I'd rather do sprints and lift weights than run distance ever again.

  • Not even so much being teenaged, but the fact that she was squatting and deadlifting and had killer thighs and butt...I'm just a leg and butt man I guess LOL.
  • Something about this pic really does it for me. Something amazing about it to me. Remember a girl in my weight lifting class many years ago in high school, squatted and deadlifted all the time, big thick thighs and a nice large round butt, that's what I like to see.
  • A lot of the advice given by doctors is horrible for diabetics and many times worsens the condition (for Type 2s). Eating low calorie diets that are also laced with carbs galore, sugars, etc. do nothing except keep you on medication and potentially insulin. Eat more, but make carbs much less a part of you diet. Ditch…
  • Sounds to me like the key was dropping all the things that you ate with you meat, not the meat itself. A lot of empty carbs in the thing you point out that you paired with the meat. I wouldn't give up meat, just learn to eat other things with it rather than the junky crap.
  • All soy products are complete garbage and you find it in everything these days if you actually read the packages. I'd prefer not to chance even a bit of hormone disruption because of all this junk and just stay away from soy milk. Whole regular milk or almond milk for me.
  • I've found it difficult at best to find supportive doctors. Whenever I have to switch doctors (one moves on, etc.) I never mention how I eat until they get my first set of blood work back for whatever I'm in there for. They always seem to test for cholesterol, etc anyway. My last doctor visit the doctor, having never seen…
  • Low carber/Paleo. Back on it strong after getting side tracked with too much gluten free junk food lately. Nothing works for me the way that low carb does. FYI, good resources: http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/ http://alldayidreamaboutfood.com/ http://www.marksdailyapple.com http://slimpalate.com/ http://www.elanaspantry.com/…

  • I'd change around your workouts to start and to 2 strength, 1 yoga and the rest cardio. For people with pre-diabetes and PCOS (as seen in your profile) strength training and less cardio has been shown to be much more effective for increasing insulin sensitivity, which will help reverse diabetes and get PCOS under control.…
  • Thankfully you don't have to put too much stock in the fact that BMI says you are obese, it will also say a some body builders with nearly 0 fat will be obese just based on weight and height. Can use it as a lose indicator of progress, but I think your pictures do a much better job of showing that.
  • 85/15 or some cases if I grind my own 70/30 makes for a much more flavorful hamburger. I never eat with a bun, just the thought of bread turns my stomach.
