“What happens when you have a sweetener is you get that sweet taste – but calories and sugar don’t show up,” Swithers said. “Your body says, ‘Wait, this isn’t what I was expecting to happen,’ and over time you may not produce those same anticipatory responses.”

So "the bad side" is that they might encourage you to eat more.

Well, if I read it right, it may also cause the endocrine system to produce less insulin, leading to higher levels of blood glucose when you do consume something that actually translates into glucose. I would THINK that this would be type 2 diabetes not caused by insulin resistance, but then I'm not a PhD.

That being said, most likely, individuals with type 2 diabetes have other concomitant factors, i.e. "man does not get type 2 diabetes from diet soda alone".

Soda makes me feel full, whether or not it has sugar, because of the carbonation. This whole thing of it "making you hungry" seems strange to me.

Not sure I see the point here? If it was on CNN or MSNBC it would make the article MORE true?

This is why I say everything in moderation!

Yeah, if you drink 20 diet and/or regular sodas a day ( and i know some people who drink pretty close to that!) then you are going to have problems. But, if you only drink them on occation (like I do with my rum!!!!) then it's not so bad!

    EVERYTHING IN MODERATION!!!!!!!

I don't drink coffee, so diet sodas are the only caffeine I have. I drink about three 12 oz. cans a day, in a glass with a lot of ice. I figure at least I'm drinking more water that way.

Eventually I'm going to taper off and drop caffeine altogether, but it's all about baby steps. I first have to get my eating second nature.

Assuming this isn't so much junk science, my question would be whether such an effect would also mean a lack of sugar cravings as a response to low blood sugar and whether alternate cravings would arise.

But junk science it probably is, and no such luck for diet pop as a way of booting a want for pastries.
