The fact I was in the 40's and seeing a steady decline made me wonder if I should worry. I did suffer in Dec so took a step back from what I was doing but otherwise was pretty active all year, 29 weekend sportive (running or cycling) events in total.

This is why I love my outdoor gym, they have family fitness sessions where parents bring their babies / young children, including the instructor. Everyone is friendly and supportive and all get a great workout. You should look for something like this near you.

Its simple really, don't beat yourself up for having a good time. If we live life continuously counting and forgetting to live then whats the point. I was of the school of thought that miles increase time, I increased miles and I went from 10 min miles to 9 minute miles and then sat between 9 and 9.30 depending on if I were 5 or 10k... Definitely go down the gears, but do not drop the the lowest gear straight out. think of your body as being like a car, when you go uphill you gently go down gears and don't just drop to first. Yes you will slow down, but as long as you are able to keep spinning you will be fine. I hate hills be it running or cycling, but…
