• Eek, I didn't choose my words terribly well. There are two sides to the equation - calories in and calories out. I was trying to say that you need not focus on only one side of it, only reducing calories in. You can also try to raise calories out. So I agree with you. I also understand that there are limits to the extent…
• Doesn't "you are eating too much" translate into eating less? Or how do you read it? I agree that accurate logging is needed, obviously! My point was simple. In my first month of dieting (on another site), I averaged 1368 calories a day and exercised over 9 hours a week. I lost 3.6 lbs. Then I discovered MFP, started…
• Someone will always say this, and it is often a man :) Whatever the question, the answer is "eat less". Obviously, if you are not losing weight, there is a calories in/calories out problem. But the answer isn't simply to eat less. When you hit (peri-)menopause, your metabolism slows down. Some studies ascribe this to the…
• ^^This. After peri-menopuase hit, my system was completely out of whack - I was convinced I could gain weight simply by walking past a chocolate :) I could have a large deficit and lose little, or exercise without any visible effect. Since I started doing the heaviest weights I could handle, and increasing them regularly,…
• Yes, you eat the same number of calories, even on rest days. I find it much easier. Don't take the calculator too seriously - take a full month, in which you don't change your exercise regime, and compare the calories you ate during the month with the weight you lost. That will give you a good idea of your TDEE.
• It doesn't work like that - eat exactly 3500 cals less and lose exactly a pound. See this thread: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1094717-3500-cals-per-pound-is-wrong-but-it-s-good-enough "At the end of the day 3500 might be 2600 or 4000. The burn you consider 400 might be 350 or 450. But it doesn't matter as long…
• We all have days like that. I spent the day in the ER with a sick child, and brought junk snacks to make everyone feel better. And now I have nowhere near enough calories to even come close to my protein target for the day, which is my primary target, so it is a big fail. We have all been there. If anyone judges you, dump…
• For years, I was convinced my husband was a "special snowflake" who didn't follow the laws of thermodynamics. He always ate much more than I did, got less exercise, and never picked up weight. I, on the other hand, could barely walk past a chocolate without picking up a couple of pounds. So I measured his body fat,…
• If this thread is still alive, I would love to join. Way over 2000 calls and started Starting Strength a couple of weeks ago. Love it!
• It really depends on the person. Two people in my household took it. One had terrible side effects and had to stop (we called it her "zombie pill"). The other is doing perfectly well on it, with no noticeable side effects. So it may be worth a try.
• ^^This. I had tears in my eyes from laughing!
• Bought some, had a bit on half a slice of toast, logged the 100 calories, and realized that I didn't have the willpower to have the stuff in the house. Gave it to the (really happy) kids to take to their house!
• Made my morning. Thanks!
• I weigh every day, but I also only record losses, since the gains tend to be disappear within a day or two. They are generally caused by heavy weight training or high sodium intake (I gained a pound from Chinese takeaways this week and lost it again the next day). I often see the recommendation on MFP to weigh after a rest…
• I have the FT60, also with a chest strap. Probably didn't need such a fancy one, but I liked the idea that it could test my fitness and estimate my VO2 max. Also got it on Amazon for a good price. It is easy to wear and doesn't lose the signal, which my old Polar did quite often. (The batteries seem to last better.)
•
Have a look at "Starting Strength" by Mark Rippetoe, I think you can preview the bit on squats on Amazon, if you do them properly they don't strain the knees at all. Good luck.
Same story - told never to squat by orthopedic surgeon, physiotherapist and trainer, because of bad knee. 10 years later,…
• So you have just joined, and you made two posts in one day, both advertising the same site. Did you read the rules on advertising?
• I second that. And if you have the Kindle app, the book is only $10. Hard to read (it gets tedious) but tons of really valuable information. Between the book and the videos, I could figure out where the old trainer was going wrong (and got a new one).
• Edited because I see the troll has left...
• Rest in peace, Madiba. Meeting you was a moment I will always treasure. You were a beacon to us all. May we follow your shining example.
• We may be on the wrong forum. I see there is a group for women who lift (I think it is called Girls who Lift - I just searched the groups for "lift"). Maybe that would be a better place to post. I am doing well, thank you! Turns out the young man who helped us on Monday was actually a trainer, who just happened to be doing…
• I have to agree with the ladies - lift weights! I suddenly started gaining weight last year when I entered peri-menopause. Made a few half-hearted attempts to get rid of it, which failed. Got tired of the flab in September, cut my intake to ridiculous levels, way below BMR, and did loads of cardio and light weights. After…
• In to see what advice you get. I am in the same boat. Did my first-ever squats on Friday and my first deadlifts today, along with squats and bench presses. Got a huge kick from lifting properly, being a middle-aged woman. Had some great advice from one of the young guys, probably because my pretty daughter was there as…
• Aubergine! Our nanny would fry aubergine in loads of oil and serve it as breakfast before school! Close second would be Brussels sprouts, artichokes and celery.
• Ah, a kindred spirit. That 500 calorie slice of pecan pie went down so well tonight, after leftover turkey and bubble and squeak!
• Ooh, yes, the dark Lindt is so good. But I also make space for the occasional Lindor Truffle, which is about 63 calories, if I remember correctly.
• I ate about 400 calories more than maintenance plus yesterday's exercise and did not pick up a single ounce this morning. This was very unusual, because i gained a pound the last time I had that many calories (at Sunday's big family dinner), and that took several days to disappear. Off to the gym anyway.
• http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2010/10/zyprexa_and_fat.html This article mentions Seroquel as one of the meds that messes with the way your body burns fats and carbs. Some people have lost weight on it by reducing or cycling carbs. I saw stories on the psych boards about successes with weight loss, but that was a couple of…
• Starting Strength - $10 on Kindle. A bit tedious, but very thorough.
