  • This. Is there a way to get these tests under the NHS? I had a similar experience, I gained a massive amount of weight in the last 3-4 years, a bulk of it being in the last year. For me, it's mainly medical and I'm being treated by medication and a special Dr/RD prescribed diet.
  • I belong there too, and yes the reviews there are much more positive. And the people who don't like a program? They just say they don't like it and they returned it or trade it. Much more positive atmosphere there. ;)
  • Sadly, that has NOT been my experience here since I joined in January. Nothing directly to me (although that may now change), but when I've lurked in the threads over the last 4 months, I just cringe at the behavior of many of the posters here. Clearly they need to re-read the MFP forum guidelines...…
  • FYI- Atkins has NEVER supported eating all the calories you want, in ANY of the books! :) The recommended amount of calories for weight loss on Atkins is 1500-1800 for women; 1800-2000 for men. Higher than a Low Calorie diet, but still NOT unlimited!
  • Regarding Hashimoto's. I was recently diagnosed. After seeing my doctor, my endocrinologist and a registered dietician, my diet is no where NEAR paleo. In fact, while it's whole foods, it's chock-full of grains and it's low fat. I started per my doctor on the Rice Diet and now I'm eating :grains, veggies, fruits and…
  • A 70+ year old program originated at Duke, that doctors still prescribe for kidney, heart, blood pressure and weight loss issues? It's valid and shouldn't be lumped with the fads above. As Amy Jamieson-Petonic, an RD at the Cleveland Clinic said in the link I posted above, it's a sound diet that fell out of favor because…
  • Hello! Hello! I just wanted to follow up. My doctor ran several more tests. And, due to some health concerns I have been put on The Rice Diet with weekly medical follow up. The Rice Diet is NOT a fad. It's the diet based on Dr. Kempner's work at the Rice Center at Duke University and continued by Dr. Rosati until last fall…
  • Oh dear. Bumping this up since my doctor just put me on the diet and I'm cringing at some of the remarks. Looks like many people haven't thoroughly researched The Rice Diet. It certainly is NOT a fad as it was developed in 1939 by Dr. Kempner and the center only closed last year. Dr. Kempner definitely had personal issues,…
  • Thanks again for the support and advice everyone, I genuinely appreciate it! I was really feeling overwhelmed when I decided to embark on this journey. It's still a bit overwhelming, but I do feel like I can do this if I just take it one meal at a time. :) -Amanda
  • Thank you again, this is helpful. I also decided not to go the cheat day route. I know it works for some but for me it would be a recipe for disaster. My goal is to eat well, enjoy my food within my calories, and occasionally allow a splurge on an indulgence and record it when I do. I assume those will be the days where I…
  • Congrats on your weight loss so far! Yes, I do adore my craft beer. I guess I forgot to mention those as the other calories I drink in my most recent post. ;) We've decided to stop having beer in the fridge and keeping it to a treat when we occasionally go out to eat. Another thing I have selected to limit. We are…
  • I did read that post earlier this week. Very helpful! Have you found eating back your exercise calories helpful in your journey? Do you rely on MFP's info? I've read in this thread and elsewhere their stats can be off.
  • I'm thinking so too. Although, I'd like to save 1500 days for the occasional splurge. Emphasize occasional... I've realized that I'm a real sugar addict! Besides half and half in my coffee, skim milk and the occasional unsweetened latte, I've never "drank" my calories. However, I love my flavored yogurt, jam on my toast…
  • The FTC is actually coming down on the diet pill industry, here's a bit about it from the beginning of the month: http://www.nbcnews.com/health/miracle-weight-loss-no-such-thing-feds-say-34-million-2D11872359
  • Thanks again for the support. I did go to my Doctor for my annual and she was extremely concerned about my rapid weight gain, since I had just been there in October for my flu shot and have gained 28 lbs since then. Turns out my TSH is off the charts; I'm going in Monday AM to follow up...I guess to have additional…
  • Thanks again! I actually own a food scale since I love to bake...time to find a new hobby I guess. A little about me: I'm 39, I will be 40 in July. I haven't had a weight problem all my life, just the last 4 years. I can't believe it's possible to put 86 lbs on in that amount of time, but it happened! At this time in 2010…
  • Thanks for the advice so far, I appreciate it.
