  • I have used the SportCount lap counter extensively. Works great. I'd record every 50, although sometimes I'd miss the press because my mind was wandering or I was too focused during a hard set. It was easy enough to just hit it again to get back to the right count.
  • Monthly totals: Swim: 22.5 miles Bike: 417.7 miles Run: 121 miles Congrats to all those that completed the challenge.
  • I just follow the plan, but there are more running workouts per week. I think I'll do about 3 and a bit for the month as the last week is recovery week and the volume comes down a bit.

  • Sounds like you have a plan to build your endurance, so I'll just add some things about OW swimming you'll need to think about. Bilateral breathing is a big one if you don't already do it. Swimmers that breathe to only one side tend to drift; bilateral breathing helps you stay straight. Practice sighting, which is looking…
  • Your math is wrong. For a 25m pool, 800m is 32 lengths, not laps. I think you did a 1600. A 28 minute 1600m is not bad at all.
  • I'm about your pace and I'm in a similar boat in that I'm doing my first Ironman next Sept. It sounds reasonable to me, but I haven't done anything longer than an Olympic yet, so I'll be interested in other responses. You might also try posting the question in the "Triathletes/Duathletes" group.
  • The keys are gone.
  • I also had ITB problems when running in stability shoes. Switched to VFFs for a couple years and now run unshod. Best thing I ever did for my knees, legs, and feet. If you do the transition, as everyone is saying, go slowly. It will take some time to build up the calves and feet.

  • Excellent! So true.
  • It has been awhile, so I can't quite remember if the sensation is as you describe, but I did have some achilles soreness. IIRC, it went away after resting a few days. I was very cautious as I have a few friends who've torn their achilles. (Not from barefoot running, I should add.) I imagine your tendon will need to…
  • I'm in. I'll have to find a track where I can get away with it.

  • Do it. It was amazing. Extremely beautiful course. I was lucky the year I did it as there was little wind and the coastal fog lifted really early so it was clear the whole way. Do some hill training and you will be fine. The big hills are all at the front of the course so the ones on the back half don't seem so bad.
  • The best way would be to get coaching by joining a Masters team near you, but for some good pointers, http://www.swimsmooth.com is pretty good.
  • When I learned to swim, we were taught to use an S-pull. It took me quite awhile to retrain myself to use a straight pull. Straight, as in the pull is straight back, not having a straight arm. I have always swum with bent elbows during the pull. The hand should not cross your midline though; you want your thrust vector to…
  • Sweet! I remember when it 'clicked' for me, and it was such a joyous thing. I was never able to do more than 3 miles barefoot, but then one run it just happened and then I was able to go further without blisters or hot spots. Today I just completed my first barefoot half and I'm psyched. Enjoy your new found freedom!

  • Electriq, my swims are boring because I'm not doing any intervals or interesting sets, I'm just chugging out the laps keeping my endurance somewhat up. I'll do some fartlek style tempo changes, but that's about it. As I get closer to the Alcatraz swim, I'll incorporate some open water swims in my training.

  • I'm running my first barefoot half in April. I'm up to 8 miles so far on my long runs. I'm in California, so I don't have to deal with road chemicals or salt. From what I've read on the forum at The Barefoot Runners Society (http://www.thebarefootrunners.org/), it is nasty stuff to run on. Stay off of it if you can. I've…
  • One option might be to set the device to alert if the pace is either to slow or too high, then he can run using the audible signals (which are different for too high and too low) to stay in his pace range. I use a Forerunner 305, which is pretty big. Even though they are discontinued, I think you can still find good used…
  • I switched to VFFs in the fall of 2009 because I was having IT band issues running in the stability shoes that the running store put me in. I have done a few halves and one full marathon in the VFFs. I went full barefoot over a year ago and I'm now in training for my first barefoot half in April. For me it wasn't about…
