It's hard to measure it. I just figure I am turning fat into muscle. I know it burns calories but its hard to know without a HRM.

I try to keep it fairly simple. Something I know I can maintain on a daily basis. When I was in the Army ROTC my breathing was terrible which in turn exhausted me quick. They taught me to breathe in with both my nose and my mouth and exhale the same way. Took some getting used to but when I got the breathing pattern down I was able to run far greater distances without being winded.
