My wife and I are both counting, so I do the weighing for both of us whomever cooks. Before then I would plate my own food so I could measure appropriately. It's still can sometimes be challenging in that I don't always know the exact recipe when I don't cook. But I have always been lucky that estimating always worked for…

That formula gives a reasonable estimate. It is not, however, highly accurate. (I wish it was as it gives me an extremely low number!) Most everyone who loses a significant amount of wait at a decent pace is losing some lean mass. I lost 70 pounds at ~2500 calories a day; and I VERY likely lost some when I was…

How are you getting your body fat percentage?

There is nothing magic about my thinking here. You say you are eating well below the recommended minimum for a male. I assume that you are at a huge deficit. We know that people at defecit that large lose lean mass. It's empirical science. I would be interested to understand how you KNOW you have lost no muscle. This is…

If you are male and eating 1200 calories, you are most assuredly losing muscle. Your statement that people can safely eat under 1000 calories is not responsible. Diets this severe need to be medically supervised.

This is simply not true. What is your information source?
-
Weighing solids and measuring liquids would help you know with greater certainty what you are consuming.
-
That may be so; but now they DO report the calories for each plate rather than half-plate. (I've never noticed them marketing themselves as family style-but I could have overlooked it I suppose.)

Once I was in a restaurant years ago (PF Changs, I think) trying to look at their nutrition information on my blackberry. I didn't have my reading glasses and the browser in my Blackberry phone was not as legible as what most of us have these days; and I didn't have my reading glasses. I ordered something that seemed to…

The Southwest Salad with double grilled chicked provides 54 grams of protein for 500 calories. The big mac provides 25 grams of protein. For me, part of a successful diet is hitting my nutritional requirements within my calories. Though I don't eat at MacDonalds, the salad would work much better for me.

Unbreaded chicken is not going to absorb much oil at all. Whatever is still on the meat will largely cook off. If I don't make a sauce; I don't worry about it.
-
I sometimes use a bit of butter when I cook rice. It's not a ton so I generally just add an estimate of my share of the oils. For example, if I add 100 calories of butter and ear 25% of it, I "charge" myself 25 additional calories. I have been massively successful without having to do some of the things others here insist…

There is an interesting documentary called "In search of General Tso" about the origins of that dish. It is very interesting. The version that we eat in America is nothing like the original dish developed by a chef in what is now Taewon. (They actually interviewed that chef in the documentary.) American Chinese takeout was…

The battered and fried dishes can really be calorie bombs. Americanized Chinese food also is very heavy in sugar, which adds calories. The soups are great; the steamed items are good. It is almost impossible to avoid the sodium, so I would wait a few days to weigh as there is likely to be water weight.

I have used the iPhone steps tracker and map my run at the same time. The distances measured by the two apps was identical. I set my activity as sedentary and count the steps. It's working well for me-just slightly undercounting calories burned.

I pre-log my day with a little cushion so I can have a snack when I need it. Pretzels with some hummus are often my "go to."
-
I guess that was my expectation. If I was ever seen weighing my portions in the kitchen area of my company, I cannot imagine ANYONE being offended. Maybe it's a regional thing, or a "company culture" thing.......

Thanks this was the point I was making. If you wanted, it sounds like you can discretely weight your food without concern if you so chose.

I wasn't aware that we were talking about a "social function." I thought it was just having lunch at work. I wouldn't bother bringing a scale, but I can't imagine any repercussions if I did.
-
How would using a scale to weigh food harm someone's image at work? That seems totally bizarre to me.
-
As suggested above, running will not make your calf muscles smaller.
-
Knowing the reason they were doing it, it wouldn't bother me in the least.

Please do not follow this advice OP. Start by eating a percentage back and use your data to adjust as needed. Someone eating their normal 1200 and burning 500 in exercise is netting 700/day. Unless under medical supervision, this is not safe.
-
Stop having cheat meals or cheat days. If you don't want to do that; at least try to log them so you can see their impact on your weekly deficit. It is possible to undo a one pound loss in one day.

I cannot imagine even considering a Marathon training program on 1600 gross calories. If you are going to train for a marathon, in my opinion, you MUST eat back calories.
-
For many of us, an important part of the process was learning how to eat in a way we can sustain in the long-term. So the period of losing is also training for maintenance. You lose that when two of your three meals are shakes... At the same time, you did not post because you wanted to be talked out of your plan. Do what…

I fill plates with less calorie dense foods which accomplishes a similar objective.
