  • Good recent article about this: Science Says FitBit Is a Joke Your smartphone is much more accurate and consistent than wearable devices.
  • One of my staples is Kind Healthy Grains Fruit & Nut Clusters, 10g protein per serving, 200 calories. I mix it with yogurt, fruit, and protein powder.
  • ShapeSense.com has some of the best available calculators imo. Notice the notes about converting gross calories to net. This is crucial for the MFP "eat back your exercise calories" approach. Most calculators give you gross calories, which includes the portion of your BMR that's already counted in your basic daily activity…

  • This is the skinfold caliper I bought after some fairly extensive research, fwiw. Reviews say it's nearly comparable in accuracy to metal ones costing hundreds. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NN9SDO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00
  • Right. The can't, and yet they claim to. They're not just scales. They have built-in bioimpedance monitors that run a tiny electric current through your body, usually via two footpads, and analyzes the result.
  • As far as I'm concerned, my bioimpedance scale is totally worthless, except for weight. When my feet are dry, it can read as high as 60%. When they're wet, it's anywhere from 22% to 30%. Even the trend isn't right. Going by skinfold calipers, I've dropped from 24% to 19% so far. The scale, under the most consistent…
  • There are excellent workouts in the "New Rules of Lifting" series of books. Many of the exercises can be done at home with minimal equipment.
  • That's great! Your report confirms my experience, that many folks simply don't know how to stop an unwanted train of thought unless they've done some kind of meditation practice. Thinking "stop" is wonderful if it works for you, but without the stable platform from which to observe thoughts that meditation provides, it may…
  • There may be better BI scales than the one I have, but I know mine is absurdly inaccurate. The biggest influence on its reading is how wet my feet are. When they're dry, sometimes the scale doesn't even get a reading, and if it does, it's something ridiculous like 55%. When my feet are nice and wet, after a shower, it's…

  • Lovely post! All of it, not just the part I quoted. Your honesty and intention really shine! There's a potential problem (and a solution) with the perspective "I'm only allowed..." The problem is that it's not always so easy to control how we speak to ourselves internally. In fact it sometimes appears impossible. So we can…
  • Would you like to say more about your experience, especially the problem with 2-3 massive meals? I'm on a sort of mini-crusade against blanket generalizations that assume everyone's body responds the same. They don't. The way I see it, each of us is an experiment with only one subject, and it's up to us to find out what…
  • Me too. It made me fidgety and cranky. Isn't it interesting how different bodies respond so differently? I'm increasingly skeptical of one-size-fits-all formulas, not only in this but in every aspect of life.
  • Incidentally, Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life is the title of an excellent book by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a more balanced perspective on life. The fact is that money or the perfect body or the perfect job, home, or partner do not bring happiness to…
  • Thanks, @Railr0aderTony! That works!
  • Not a GIF, but the immortal Peter Sellers with a roomful of cats from the 1966 film "The Wrong Box." Be sure to catch the bit with the kitten starting around 2:50. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJbwtyHSu6E
  • Yes, you can. On the web, click My Home -> Goals, click the big green Change Goals button, select Custom, and click the green Continue button.
  • The link in my October 8 post still works: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/profile/notifications. It's the same as the All Notifications link when you click the bell icon. And the links to show Replies and Discussions are still on that page. They've got rid of the new forum Profile page, intending, I think, to merge…
  • I said slightly misleading. I meant that the passage could be read to imply that 1500 mg is a minimum ("Adequate Intake level"). But when the previous part is included, it becomes clear that they're not saying it's a minimum. "Yeesh," yourself. It wasn't a personal criticism. Just a clarification. :)
  • In case anyone hasn't noticed, the OP has deactivated their account here.
  • Taken by itself, this excerpt from the CDC's page is slightly misleading in the context of this discussion. Right before that they say: The takeaway is that if you're consuming at least 500 mg, you're absolutely fine. (It would be pretty hard to go under that number. My sodium goal is set to 1250, which works quite well…
  • Or click the "Attach image/file" icon and paste the URL into the box. The result is the same:
  • Exactly! Well said! Think of it as a commitment to being healthy that starts today and lasts a lifetime. If you think there's an endpoint, you're subtly setting yourself up to relax the commitment when you reach a goal.
  • I set my sodium goal to 1250 mg/day, which is what some sources recommend for folks over 50. (MFP's default is quite high, even for younger people, imo.) It's one of the numbers I watch most closely (along with calories and protein), and I rarely exceed the goal. Yes, it means many processed foods are out of bounds. There…
  • This is excellent, a must-read for anyone who thinks they're having trouble with willpower. It's almost exactly how I quite smoking 40 years ago, after a 10-year 2-pack-a-day habit. I said to myself "I'm a non-smoker," and that simple act compelled me to behave like a non-smoker. It works, folks.
