I lost the weight in about 8 - 9 months, then started to gain very slowly. My new lifestyle changes kept it under 5 - 6 lbs; however, I started to feel invincible, so I began to eat out more frequently, bought a large quantity of chocolates, and quit my walking group (that is another story). I realized that I've gained…

Another thought: If you have recently started or increased your exercise, you will gain muscle, which weighs more than fat, and you will have some water retention in your muscles for 2 - 3 days following a workout. I think this is called DOMS, and it happens to me routinely. I just have to remind myself that a calorie…

I had radioactive iodine treatment in 1999, which destroyed my thyroid gland. I take Levothyroxine daily. I put on a lot of weight the first 6 months. My doctor said that was normal, and that it would level off. The dosage of Levothyroxine can be adjusted, but you may have to find the right doctor, because as soon as they…

Try brazillian black beans. I received a large container full this week from a friend. It has been wonderful as a side dish, to enhance a salad, add to soup, or pair with rice. Mine had a small amount of sliced sausage (smoked, chorizo maybe). Here is a recipe, but I imagine there are many variations out there.…

The Nordic Diet? http://www.amazon.com/The-Nordic-Diet-Organic-Lifestyle/dp/1616081899 I took nutrition years ago in college. The instructor took us to the grocery store to learn how to read labels and spot false "healthy" foods. She recommended shopping the outside perimeter of the store, as most foods in the aisles are…

My boss got me a Fitbit Flex. My daughter got me some gym clothes, and a tablet to keep me entertained while exercising. My sister is sending a box in the mail..... and I just know it's going to have FABULOUS gym clothes!! Arriving Saturday!!

I tried it a year ago after watching the documentary. I found that I could do 700 calories a day and still lose at the same rate. I gained it all back when I was eating in a cafeteria that summer, and was doing a lot of walking... not sustainable imo. If you really want to try it though, here are some things I ate: Plain…

Thank you all for your insight. I agree with Dr. Freedhoff. After reading some successful stories on MFP where individuals describe meticulous weighing and fitness regiments, I wanted to make sure I wasn't fooling myself by taking a more relaxed approach.

I never noticed that there are weekly calorie stats. Yes, I like that idea!

Hospital cafeterias tend to have a lot of healthy choices, since the medical staff also eats there. I start my morning with prayer and devotions. It helps me cope with stress throughout the day. Maybe take a break when needed, and head to the hospital Chapel for some quiet time. You are no good to anyone if you let…

Your question made me curious. I learned something I didn't know before, so thanks: "Exercise and diet can help you lose weight by creating a calorie deficit. Your body will begin to break down stored fat through a series of complicated metabolic pathways. The byproducts of fat metabolism are expelled through your lungs,…

"Fat is stored inside the fat cell in the form of triaglycerol. The fat is not burned right there in the fat cell, it must be liberated from the fat cell through somewhat complex hormonal/enzymatic pathways. When stimulated to do so, the fat cell simply releases its contents (triaglycerol) into the bloodstream as free…

I just copied an article excerpt from the thread "good news for people who like to eat fat". It's a study done at Ohio state, and just published this week: "looking at palmitoleic acid, however, the scientists found that it consistently decreased on the high-fat/low-carb diet in all participants. The fatty acid then showed…

I whizzed through 30 minutes on the elliptical today, and had to double-check the time because it felt like 10 minutes. I could only do three minutes when I started. Now I can also head over to the weight machines and do another 30 minutes there.

These look like mother/daughter photos. You look so much younger now.

I considered quitting the message boards because I was attacked for making a suggestion that some people didn't agree with. The original post had asked for suggestions, so it was really up to that individual to take away what they liked, and leave the rest. I provided links to professional advice and guidance on the topic…

That nasty fat gets into every nook and cranny of our bodies. Remember that the reduction is occurring everywhere, so the impact in one spot may be unnoticeable. Watch this short video on visceral fat to help keep you motivated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ymsj3nF2EjM

I really liked this story, especially because different exercise was right for different phases of your weight loss and fitness level. I see a lot of younger people describing programs that would injure or discourage someone with physical conditions, older persons, and people with a great deal of weight to lose. Also, you…

I've had to ramp up very slowly myself. I didn't want to try too much right away, so I sometimes joined a Meetup.com group that does leisure walking together. The time flies by, and you will meet new people who desire to be fit. To get that upper body started, I sometimes did "Sit and Be Fit" on Youtube with Mary Ann…

I am 5'4", and started at almost the same weight as lalalindaloo. I'm so excited to see how fantastic she looks at 137! My goal weight is 135.

I just read an article on DOMS, and it fits with my pattern. I actually gain a pound or so before the whoosh. I think it has to do with the muscles retaining water after a weight lifting workout. I don't like to log those gains because it is discouraging.…

My daughter is a nutrition major. We are going to cook a healthy Thanksgiving dinner together. This will be on the menu. Thanks!

Go to Youtube and look up Fitness Blender Low Impact. They have some good starter workouts. Also, the old PBS show "Sit and Be Fit" with MaryAnn Wilson is on Youtube. Sit and Be Fit is an award-winning exercise program for senior citizens and individuals with limited physical motion, that is available on video tapes and is…

I lost my mother when she was only 52 from complications of diabetes. My sister is already very ill, most of my aunts and uncles die from diabetes/congestive heart failure. I don't have it, but avoiding this is one of my motivations for losing. Your story just goes to show how avoidable this disease really is. Btw, you…

Hello, I have been a single mother for 23 years. She's gone to college now, so I have decided it's time to leave that frame of mind behind. It's okay to think of myself now, and take care of me for a change, but I know how much you have to sacrifice for the time being.

I think some people may need to have a Snickers; they are not themselves when they are hungry.

She could buy her fish from the supermarket which has been farm-raised in Thailand or China. I'm sure their environment and regulations are top-notch! This is consumerism thinking. We have food recalls for dangerous bacteria from "safe" sources all the time. She asked for suggestions, so if she doesn't like the idea, she…
