HOnestly - I think you would be better off having good running shoes that aren't "broken in" rather than what you are using. For sure you will feel an amazing difference with good shoes. If you can only pick them up on Saturday, then wear them around the house, etc. until Sunday. My vote - get the good shoes and run like…

The fact that at age 52, I have no doubt that I am more physically fit than I was even as a teen-ager. I'm still in the obese category, but already my body is morphing into something different, and I really feel great about that. I love the accomplishment of running and feeling invigorated and alive.

Congratulations - you look amazing :-) i bet you feel like a million bucks, too!! Thank you for saying letting us know it took 5 years. That truly is the inspiration needed for those of us who are tortoises in this journey. I keep trying NOT to put a time limit on my complete weight loss, but it can get hard sometimes.

Congrats on being overweight!!!!

I saw your post, and just wanted to jump in and say "Go for it"!!!! I ran my second 5k this morning, after following the c25k program. When I started, the 90 second runs just about did me in. Good luck everyone :-)

Congrats - that is absolultey amazing!!!!

I totally understand what you mean about pulling yourself out to go on the treadmill. When I have my depressive times, I would just love to stay in bed for, well, days - weeks???! Exercising truly has been the catalyst for me, and I'm hoping that with the winter season coming on, I will see some good results and have a…

"I work out"....Totally brings the biggest grin to my face when I'm running :-)

You have found a great tool to help you achieve your goal - which is very attainable! My advice, since you asked, is to first not set a definite time limit. You can accept that it may take "approximately" 6 months, or something like that, but doing this the right way does take time. And my success so far started with…

I haven't had much lock with the crock pot version of steel-cut oatmeal :-( My recommendation - make a BIG pot in the traditional way, and just keep it in the fridge. I love to add stewed fruit (apples, pears), some frozen blueberries, and cinnamon, brown sugar to my oatmeal. mmmmm - sounds so good I am going to make some…

This is just my opinion: Is it fast food that got you where you are? Fast food was a huge contributing factor of my obesity. My car would be strewn with empty brown bags. So for me, there is no MacDonalds or any other fast food. It has been easier than I ever imagined. When it comes to sweets, if it is offered I completely…

Same as above - go to a running store. Too many miles on your feet and its too important. So many options, they will watch you walk and get you fitted properly.

While I don't remember the exact date, I remember the evening as if it was last night. I walked to the corner, and was exhausted. I felt like the fat in my legs was going to explode through the skin. That night I remembered Susan Powter, and her mantra of just get out and walk. I started the next day, joined MFP 2 weeks…

Congrats on Day 1!! Like the others said, don't push ahead, follow the program. (I pushed and sprained a muscle in my hip, huge setback.) You will be amazed at how quickly your heart and lungs get strong. Don't worry about your speed - you will be working on building stamina, and speed can come later. I'm very slow,…

Would you consider volunteering at a run instead of running? That way you get all the excitement - no cost, and you can go and run your own little self race another time. Our running store (running room) has 2 free group runs a week. Good luck!
-
Fair warning - one goes very quickly from getting outside for a walk/run to going for a run even if it is raining/snowing....just sayin... And welcome to the awesome side :-)

CONGRATS!!!!! MFP has turned so many of us into runners :-) Agree with earlier poster, be warned - highly addictive activity, to say the least!

Aha - an aunt who is bucking the trend, refuses to spend countless days/hours in the kitchen for people to over eat and have tummy aches!!!! One Christmas I was that daughter-in-law, I ordered in Christmas dinner!!!!! My mother-in-law never let me live that one down, lol!! It is one day out of the year, try and shake that…

Baby steps - honestly, give yourself 15 minutes to do an activity. When I started the easiest/cheapest one was to go for a 15 minute walk each day. That was all I asked of myself, and it had a positive effect. Good luck - the first step is always the hardest!

Congratulations!!!!!

I'm just here to say I'm sorry that you have this battle. I had/have my own battles with my mil regarding my children when they were small (no, they can't sleep in the crib you have saved that my husband slept in; please put away the chemicals under your sink; no, I would prefer you didn't pack them in your car and take…

Congrats - that is my ultimate goal too :-)

My breakfast smoothie is this: 1/2 cup froz blueberries, 1/2 banana, 1/2 avocado, 1/2 zuchini, 1tsp each: maca powder, wheatgrass powder, chia seeds and honey. Add almond milk to the top of the items and blend. I know it seems really gross, but I love the nutrition I get from it, and actually enjoy it...my daughter thinks…

Congrats on your first 5k!!!! Enjoy the high you will have for a few days, it is awesome :-) I ran my first one in September, second one coming up. Yep, this racing this is totally addictive !
-
I'm not in the weight range you noted, but my 5k time was 42:12 and I was ecstatic and proud :-) Honestly, its all relative. The fact that we are competing in these races is a feat in itself :-) I have my next 5k in 2 weeks, and am hoping to come in at about 40 minutes. I have also signed up for a 10k and fully expect it…

I just signed up for my first one today!!! I am excited/nervous as there is a good chance I will be running in snow. Yikes! I also highly doubt my time will be anywhere near yours, I expect closer to 80 minutes. Congrats on your run and your awesome time!

WW didn't work for me, either. I decided to save my money from that and join a gym. I am sure you will have success here if you dig in, and it seems that there are a lot of brides to be, so you can all work together through the more stressful aspects of wedding planning! Re hunger - I was hungry the first week or so when I…

I start with a base of equal parts frozen fruit and almond milk (or regular milk). Depending on how I feel, I will add any of these: avocado, zuchini, kale, banana I also will throw in maca powder, wheat grass powder, chia sees and a spoon full of honey. Sometimes a spoon ful of cocoa powder to make it chocolate. According…

Yay!!! I had my first one September 10th! The only advice I would have is to try and make sure you don't start out with your pace too fast. It was very exciting, and it would be easy to run too fast. Have fun and let us know how it goes!

I like to have a handful of almonds, and a fruit smoothie (made of frozen fruit, almond milk and a bit of honey)
