  • That is a great pace!! I run considerably slower than that, lol! But it was reading posts like yours that made me even consider running, and then consider running a 5k, and well, you get the drift! So thank you for posting, and to those just starting out running - we are living proof that our bodies are amazing, and…
  • I love this! Welcome, congratulations, and yes you CAN do it! At first you may feel hunger due to the correction in the amount of food you are eating. But honestly, it doesn't take long to re-adjust your body to the new limits. Sometimes I find it hard to get all my calories in now, which just seemed incomprehensible…
  • Here is one persons view on soy: http://meghantelpnerblog.com/2009/09/16/no-fu-to-tofu/ (note, I am not associated with Meghan, but I have taken one of her classes, and I really have learned a lot from her nutritional ideas)
  • I felt like my fat was going to pop my skin open in my legs. I felt tired, awful and uncomfortable in my very own skin.
  • Oh my, what an awesomely awesome race!!!! My daughter totally loves anything zombie, please let us know how it goes!!!
  • You sure can see it!!!! Congrats!
  • Our favorite kale recipe is sauteed. Start with thinly sliced onion, sauteeing in olive oil. Add the kale (washed, tough stem removed, and sliced). Add balsamic vinegar (probably a tablespoon). Toss and let the kale wilt. Toss on about a tsp sugar, and toss again. mmmm. Yummy!

  • Of course you can do it! Honestly, if I can, then I believe with all my heart that anyone can. You have just the right amount of time to build up your runs to run the entire 5k. But if you walk it, so what!!! Just add a little bit each run until you have run the distance. Is it hard, you bet! Will you feel on top of the…
  • CONGRATS on quitting smoking, and staying that way!!!! I am an ex-smoker, although it was a long time ago. However, I believe that if I can run, anyone can run. Why? Because I'm overweight, short, and on the other side of 50! Keep at it and you will succeed. Each run I still find taxing, and dig in deep, knowing that by…
  • gadgets. Be it camera, sewing, or kitchen. Oh, and running gadgets now, too!
  • Try some quinoa. It is a grain, loaded with protein, and you can do anything with it! It makes a wonderful salad, with tomatoes and cheese. Google it, and you will see so many ideas. My daughter has a hectic schedule, two jobs, one at a farm. She found it, and it is her go to food now.
  • Enjoy the victory!!! You look great :-)
  • I often hear this point of view, and certainly respect it. However I can honestly say that in my own situation, neither of my kids were fed fast food very often. (I, on the other hand, was the Queen of Fast Food). They are both in their early twenties now, have no weight issues, and do not eat fast food. Same with pop -…
  • Just got home from my skipping rope class!!! What an incredible cardio work out you can get in two minute increments!!! I feel so uncoordinated, but each week am getting a bit stronger/better. My shin hurts tonight, tho, we had one marathon skip to try and go five minutes. Didn't make it, but tried.
  • i'm curious to see other replies here - I am a very slow runner. But I find that the movement of running is much more aerobic for me than the movement of walking. My gut says the calorie burning will be the same, but that the cardio building is much better. When running at that pace (now up to 4.2 mph), I will work up a…
  • I have good luck with lettuce if I wash it, and break it apart (but don't tear it into small pieces). Dampen some paper towels, wrap the lettuce in that, and then put the whole thing in a plastic grocery bag in the drawer in the fridge. As far as grapes, I would wash them, and break them into serving portions, and then put…
  • Same thing as everyone else, recommend the couch 2 5k program! Just remember to take it slow, slower than you think you need to! I, too, was worried about the extra weight I was carrying and how it would affect me. Now all I think about is how incredibly light I will feel when I run and have lost all that weight! Good…
  • Hi, Had a peak at your profile - what a beautiful horse you have :-) My daughter has a horse as well, they are incredible companions for sure. It looks like you should probably try and eat a bit more - and start adding in some fresh fruit and vegetables. You will feel better for it! Good luck :-)
  • THat is incredible!!!! There will be no catching you now :-)
  • When I looked in the mirror today, I saw just how much I look like my Dad! Lost him a few years ago. Since I've always had a round face, and he was always really thin, I just didn't see so much of him in me. But today - wow, it was my Dad's eyes looking at me in the mirror!
  • COngrats on finding this site, your friends were right! The people here have inspired me and driven me to do more than I ever imagined possible :-) You CAN feel better, I can barely compare the old me to the new me. Start with the Dr visit, just to rule out anything there. And then head out for a little walk. Day 2, go for…
  • I would actually order a burger! Add tomatoes, lettuce, but leave off any mayo, bacon, cheese. Re veggie burgers, I make my own, but am not into pre-made veggie burgers. Who knows what in the world is in them!
  • My mantra to myself regarding sweets is this: Is it a piece of cake for someone's birthday, or a sweet in honor of some sort of celebration? If yes, then I enjoy the treat and the moment. Is it just Tuesday and I want a sweet? NO GO.
  • Personally, I try to eat healthy each time food is in front of me. I've really changed my thinking, now I "think" like an athlete. I prefer to put the high octane, good fuel in this old body! That said, you don't have enough calories to be healthy, and there are worse things than mac and cheese!
  • I have learned, honestly, that most everyone in a gym is there for a reason, themselves. But it IS scarey to go in the first time, that I know as I just started at a gym a few weeks ago. Go for it! And also, I have found that the strength training has really helped my running - my legs are already stronger!
  • COngratulations!!! I absorbed every word you wrote about your experience. It is because of people like you that I have been inspired to believe in myself, to train and imagine that I could run a 5k, and to dare to dream that a 10k is in my future!
  • Welcome - we are travelling the same journey! You will find this site very motivating, and realize quite quickly that you are capable of doing things you never imagined. THe weight will come off - you can do it!
  • I've only run one race, so I'm certainly no expert! But here I go anyway, lol! I was told not to wear my water belt for the race. (Not cool? maybe?) And did I ever regret that. Approached the water table, took my water, and promptly inhaled it straight up my nose. Threw the cup away, choked and basically ran the race with…
  • I was never able to succed on weight watchers, even though I have heard over the years that they have the best, most nutritious plan. Always felt hungry. But then I just wasn't in to the whole group meeting mentality, either. So maybe that was my problem. Having people stand up and say they had created some wonky desert…
  • I have been using my Garmin for approximately 3 months now, and find the chest strap very comfortable. The information from it I find so beneficial. My average heart rate on runs has dropped considerably since starting - a true indicator of getting more fit. It also gave me the added confidence that I'm "ok" when running -…
