  • My eyebrows *literally* went up when I scrolled down to the "after" pic. Well done!
  • For two hours of heavy exercise (if you were truly sweating the whole time which that average heart rate would generally indicate) then yes, it's definitely possible.
  • iPhone, earbuds with Jabra Clipper Bluetooth adapter (so no wire between the earbuds and the phone - well worth the $$), HRM, and water bottle.
  • Thanks guys - and trust me, I don't plan on doing something like that again - it was a miserable experience. That said, it really does help me prove to myself that I can do anything I set my mind to even if it means dragging my body into a challenge kicking and screaming.
  • When I don't log things it's mostly because I simply forget. I've been trying to be good about logging it right before or right after I eat it but life gets so busy sometimes... The embarrassment for bad choices does come into play a bit as well but my open diary + MFP friends help keep me honest and if I cheat I'm really…
  • I do that too, sometimes. The key is sometimes and not alltimes. :)
  • Not a stupid question at all. I was going to point this out as well - verify what the numbers on your particular treadmill actually mean! *Usually* the speed is in MPH but most "home gym treadmills" use some arbitrary incline number that has nothing to do with a true degree incline. The "15" setting on my home treadmill…
  • LOL I did and she laughed. So then I *did* suck it in - and there wasn't much of a difference really. Which...I guess is nice?
  • I don't see why folks can't take their calls away from the action just like you would (I hope) if you were in a restaurant. The gym says she was a repeat offender so good on them for doing this.
  • With your cardio + weight work at the gym you'll be just fine for the Warrior Dash. I did my first one this past year and will be doing another this year. It's a ton of fun and you can go at your own pace. If anything I'd suggest focusing on your upper body strength to help pull yourself up ropes and the like.
  • Oh yeah, and now that I'm running in various races and mud races I'm spending about $500 this year on entrance fees.
  • $80/month, 1 month free when I pre-pay for the year. It's quite a bit of money but I go all the time and feel like it's worth the expense. I got to stop taking blood pressure and cholesterol medication as a result so there's a couple of co-pays I no longer have to pay. :) I don't buy supplements but eating healthy in…
  • I've bought it twice (first on my Droid2, then again when I switched to iPhone). It's a ton of fun and you can use it on a treadmill too (just no random zombie chases). It uses the music already on your phone. It also can sync to their website so if you switch platforms like I did it will re-sync back and you don't have to…
  • I pay about $3.50/gallon on average these days for whole milk for the kids.
  • I use music but don't max out the volume. I also sometimes pull the headphones off for the last 1/4 mile since the cheers help motivate me more than the tunes. I use the Nike Running app which plays the music and also tracks my progress and can be programmed to announce my pace every mile or so which helps keep me on track.
  • Congrats dude - you're doing great.
  • Good luck - your goal is within your reach and I'm sure you'll get there now that both of you had what others have rightly called the "lightbulb moment". Way to turn a bad day into a positive!
  • My NSV today is actually sort of a SV - I bought a new scale since the old one broke a month ago. I'd been avoiding it for a variety of reasons but it came in today. I have most things shipped to my office so when it came in I took it to the bathroom and used it. Just getting that far is a victory for me.
  • I used to be the same way - any excuse to get more of those stupid game pieces. Super-size it? Sure - I get two more game pieces! Now, for some reason, while still drawn to the game aspect of it, the idea of eating McDonald's food just isn't appealing to me at all. I'll still eat a fry or three when someone else has them…
  • Ideally I try to do both. Light cardio (ie - walk/jog/hike on the treadmill) first, then weights, then heavy cardio (ie - run on treadmill or high intensity elliptical). The thinking behind starting with some light cardio is to at least get the heart rate elevated which will let me burn a few more calories during the…
  • It's a hell of a lot harder than the one I just did but Tough Mudder has events in the UK and was even designed by British Special Forces! I'm trying to psych myself up to do it next year.
  • I'll throw in another vote for inserts and good running socks. Also being fitted in a true running store where they watch you on a treadmill and let you run around the store. I had no idea there was such a difference in shoe fit until I tried on 15+ pairs in a day. I got the Superfeet Blue insole and a pair of Balega…
  • Yes, Harvard Square (now Boston Common). I'm the guy fighting with him for the lead. :)
  • I'm sure others are saying this too but I can't read through 7 other pages of replies so here's mine: Awesome story, awesome post, awesome pictures, and awesome bod. Congratulations and thanks for even more inspiration!
  • You should have just stolen his bike.
  • I don't keep any of it a secret. Many of my friends are on here now because of me. Once that happened I opened up my food diary so I can be watched by my peers and called out if I screw up - it helps keep me accountable. Usually a conversation with a coworker or friend starts off with "you're looking great these days - how…
  • Take the dude as yet another NSV - he was obviously checking you out. Feel good about that, not scared. If he followed you out *then* you should start feeling creeped out. Don't let that night stop you from working out whenever and wherever you feel like it though!
  • Most of the wrist watch-only HRM units are "on demand" meaning they will only sense your heart rate when you hold your other hand on it. The benefit of something like the FT4 (which I have) or FT7 is they are *constantly* monitoring your heart rate and thus are able to give you an accurate reading of your entire workout.…
  • I stand semi-corrected. :) I do circuit weight training so it's as close to cardio as weight training can get so I trust my HRM results I guess. That said, I usually try not to eat back *all* of those calories simply because even though an HRM is the best way to gauge the burn it's still just an estimate.
