  • Neither. I have found the Polars to be cheaply built and the comms between the HRM inconsistent. I recommend the timex ironman triathalon HRM (M811). About the same price as the FT7 but much better made. BTW...I have the FT7 and was totally unimpressed with it...replaced it with the timex. For running, I use a Garmin…
  • Fitbit One...I use it to estimate calories based on activity level. It seems to do a great job.

  • I have the same thing going on. My weight loss is noticeable in my face with more pronounced wrinkles...definitely look older than I did before. I've read that the wrinkles and loose skin will get better over time...I hope so!
  • Try backing off on your pace until you are more used to running. Run at a pace where it would be uncomfortable to have a conversation with a running buddy. As you get more used to it, you will be able to pick up your pace and your heart rate will not race as much. I had a similar problem with swimming. I have always been a…
  • When I had to buy larger uniforms. I already had 2 sets of everything...my fit size, my not so fit size, and then had to go to a fat guy size. I looked horrible in my dress uniform and made a decision to get back into shape and be an example for younger officers.
  • Eat and drink whatever I want, but in smaller portions. Enjoy the cookies, pies, cakes, etc...but won't over indulge. Work out on my normal workout days (M,T,TH,F), and maybe add in a Saturday or Sunday morning run. I usually have a splurge day per week, so Thanksgiving, Christmas eve/day, New Years eve/day shouldn't have…
  • Congrats! You look amazing...your hard work and determination have paid off.
  • You look amazing! Great job...you have worked hard and it shows. Truly inspirational journey that I'm sure will motivate many others on MFP.
  • I am 1.8 pounds away from my goal weight. I originally set my goal thinking I would not reach it, but expected to be happy if I reduced my waist size to 32" and saw more muscle definition. In that regard, I have reached my goal (and have maintained for over a month) but am now thinking I would like to go another 5 lb below…
  • I don't really care. People can choose their own path to weight loss and determine what works for them. I personally eat 2500 calories per day and exercise (mix of run, swim, elliptical, and weights) 4 to 5 times per week. I try not to be under 1800 calories net. This has worked for me...gone from 39" to 31.5" waist, 202…
  • Lost appetite. I work out early in the morning four days per week. I don't eat before I go to the gym and usually burn around 700 calories. When I get home, I'm not hungry so I just go to work. Most days it's not until mid morning that I finally want something to eat. On most days I stay in "negative calories" well into…
  • I find that many people I see don't take full advantage of their treadmill or elliptical trainer. They leave the incline or resistance low. With your asthma, maybe you can increase the incline on your treadmill to get your heart rate up a little higher. Find an incline that is challenging but does not make it impossible…
  • First cup of the day: 3-4 table spoons of good old half and half. It's only 60-80 cal and well worth it! Black after that.
  • I think everyone goes through something like this. It will take some extra effort to log your food intake and do some exercise. Make it a point to do both today, and then tomorrow...within a couple of days you will get back in the routine. When I travel for work, I always pack workout clothes and make sure to hit the…
  • My ex-wife once threw a box of pancake mix at me. She was in the kitchen and grabbed the first thing she could get her hands on. She missed me when she threw it. The box hit the wall behind me and exploded spraying pancake mix everywhere!
  • Hi, my name is Gerald (go by "G"). Been on AD for over 16 years now. I'm an aeronautical engineer stationed at Wright-Patterson. Spent 3 years here from 98-01, taught at OTS from 01-04, did flight test at Hurby from 04-08, been back at WP where I spent 3 years at AFIT and am now working in the AF Research Lab.
  • My problem has always been maintenance. I can lose weight, and have been on a roller coaster for years, but once I get to a weight I'm ok with I stop being disciplined and put it back on. I personally have to continue with the habit of tracking to maintain awareness of where I stand.
  • Start by setting your alarm clock half an hour earlier than usual, get up, and go for a walk. The key is to make small incremental changes that slowly become new habits. Replace one unhealthy meal with something healthier (get grilled chicken instead of fried, choose veggies over fries, or only have dessert once per week,…
  • Me too. I am 5 lb from my goal and have been stuck here for a couple of weeks now. I'm not disappointed though because I'm happy with my other measurements and am noticing muscle gain and definition. Even though the scale hasn't moved in about 2 weeks, my waist has decreased by about 1/4" over that time. Overall, I have…
  • Originally from Granville Summit, PA (hill country in northern PA). Living in Beavercreek, OH until the AF moves me again.
  • Just pick back up with your routine. One weekend of overindulging is not going to derail the progress you have made over many months.
  • I will have mine this month, but will be waist only since I've been on profile for back & joint problems. I am not worried since my waist is 32" right now. I will have to re-test in April and will be taking the full test. I've been able to work out while on profile (just not at high intensity), so as long as I am able to…
  • I love mine! I use it to track my routine activity. When I work out, I use a heart rate monitor and log those calories based on that. It is hard to select the appropriate activity level to set my calories since 1/2 of my day (work) is sitting at a desk and the other 1/2 is taking care of my two little kids. So, I set my…
  • That's great! I hope that you are able to get off the machine completely. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2002. The doctor was convinced that mine was caused by overly large tonsils and a narrow airway. So, I had a surgery (called UP3) that cut out my tonsils and uvula and corrected a deviated septum. The surgery…
  • I haven't eliminated anything...I just reduce the amounts of things I eat and make healthier swaps. I still eat sweets, just not very many. I still have dessert, but only once per week. I still drink alcohol, but limit to 1 or 2 drinks per week. The key for me has been limiting portions (being sure to measure with a food…
  • I still manage to have a couple of beers per week (usually Friday beer call after work) without hindering my progress. I might workout a little extra on that day, or go for an extra walk, or eat a little less at lunch (but still healthy) to have open calories. I have just reduced my alcohol intake in general to a couple of…

  • Use your HRM for exercise...use the fitbit to track all your other activity.
  • Good luck! I also have reduced the amount of running I do and have increased my time on the elliptical trainer. By varying the resistance, I can burn as many calories as I do with a run without beating my knees up. My typical workout on the elliptical is something like: - Start at level 9 for 3-5 min to get warmed up -…
