  • Another great low-carb day - day number two! I'm loving this diet. Lots of fat, creamy dairy, LOL (I'm not looking for ultra low-carb), meat, and fresh fruits and veggies. I'm not really missing the grains or sugars at all. I had a little bit of the munchies today, but they were easily satisfied. I think I'm really going…
  • 93 total carbs my first day. Not bad! I can do this! I really didn't feel deprived of anything and always found something low-carb (except for whole fruits) to eat when hungry. The only thing I'm giving up is white sugar and grains. Everything else (fruit, dairy) is okay to begin with. I want to see how that goes for a…
  • Another low-carb topic to follow. Yay! I need everyone's experience and wisdom. Just getting started. Very newb. I have a lot of research to do. What's considered a low-carb food? How many carbs in it? What's considered a low-carb day? How many carbs should I shoot for per day? Should it be a percentage of total calories,…
  • That would be very helpful, thanks! I'm scouring the internet for food lists right now.
  • I'm joining you guys. Is this the best place for low carb? I'm a total newb. Normally, I eat oatmeal every day for breakfast, and something like sandwiches for lunch, pasta for dinner. I've been mostly eating "clean," which means I've already crossed the hurdle of getting the white sugar out of my diet. That part is easy…
  • Tammietifanie, thanks, I'm not ready to join in until I get more info. Soon! I'll watch and learn until then. :) Cheryl
  • I'm following you guys. I'm interested in starting a low-carb diet soon. I'm just not sure which one. I have ordered Jonny Bowden's Living the Low Carb Life (which presents and compares all the different low-carb diets). I've been following the "eat clean" diet for a long time, which I started because it helped me get the…
  • Acronyms again :ohwell: : What's MR? I can imagine the pool might be a good place to work on your bare foot form. Lately I'm focusing on my walking form. You're supposed to step ball of foot first, but I've walked heel-to-toe for so many years that it's hard to change my old habits. It feels weird when I put on…
  • I'm still here! I'm just being really bad about logging my food. I need to get back into because even though I'm exercising more, the pounds are slowly creeping on. My barefoot running progress: 20 miles and counting. (My husband is up to almost 300! If he wore shoes, it would be about time for a new pair. ) I'm…
  • I don't know that I feel like I'm making much "progress." My foot feels a little swollen and stiff today after my VFF run yesterday. I'm feeling increasingly jealous of those who can strap on a pair of VFFs and go out and run several miles right away! I may be confined to running on grass for the rest of my life.…
  • The best running shoes are no running shoes. Barefoot running is amazing.
  • I ran almost 2.5 miles today. I decided to try my VFFs again. My feet they felt "blinded." I ran on harder surfaces than I have been--road, gravel, packed dirt, trail, and some grass, too. I'm not sure whether it was the shoes or the surfaces, but my feet hurt! (Mainly the surgery one.) They haven't hurt like that since…
  • Boy do I need motivation and support with clean eating--and calorie counting--lately! Good place for this thread. I eat oatmeal for breakfast almost every day. A clean meal always includes protein along with its complex carbs (that's the unprocessed grains, fruits, or veggies), so I add liquid egg whites. (They're also…
  • You mean it hurts more if you're barefoot than if you're not? How did you hurt yourself? This may not be you, but so many people turn to barefooting because of injuries with shoes! Me included.
  • Avag, can't wait to hear how it goes!
  • I love my Vibrams, too, but I don't want to use them too much for running. I want to be able to feel the ground and run on all types of surfaces. I may use them for a 5K trail run this coming Monday because I'm not ready for twigs, woodchips, and stuff, but much of the trail is sandy. I'm afraid of overdoing it, though, if…
  • Hi, Nina. I'm so glad you're listening to your dreams, and not those people who are laughing at you! You can transition little by little, as Gemi said, but I went cold turkey (well, after I tried VFFs because I was afraid to really run barefoot). You might have to cut your mileage back a little bit at first, but as soon as…
  • What's DL stand for? :blushing: I hear you on recuperating! Been there too many times! Glad you're up and walking. Today was a running rest day for me (did strength training). After injuring myself so many times running in shoes, it's now a habit to never run two days in a row. Maybe with bare feet I'll eventually be able…
  • I'm eating clean with you, but not giving up my half and half (and sometimes sweetener) in my coffee. It's my one concession, and not a big addition to my calories. I don't drink juice, soda, or alcohol, but I love my daily creamy coffee and tea! Drinking more water, however, is always a good challenge!
  • "Multi grain" just means the manufacturer threw a few different grains in there, not necessarily a lot of them, and not necessarily whole. "100% whole grain" is always the best choice over "multi grain."
  • It's almost impossible to find any shoe that is completely flat on the bottom. Frustratingly (for me), even most flip flops have raised heels. Most so-called "barefoot" shoes are gimmicks. They come from companies who are trying to profit off barefooters (or not lose profits to them) and people interested in the idea of…
  • Today I drove to the town park and ran through the sports fields for about 30 mins. Three successful BF runs in a row under my belt! I'm feeling it a little bit in one of my feet (feels like I slightly pulled something), but it's my "good" foot (vs. my bunion/surgery foot), and to me that's a promising sign. Any aches and…
  • I don't know much about gaining weight, except that it happens on me without thinking! Are you trying to put on fat, muscle, or both? I would suggest lots of healthy fats (olive oil, nuts and nut oils, dairy). Either way, you need extra calories, obviously. Weight lifters and athletes use clean diets to both gain…
  • My husband and father ran with a bunch of shoed people. They were two of a total of three barefooters (out of 215 total racers) in the triathlon. Barefooters are still too rare to have entire barefoot races. Usually there are only one or two of them in a race at most. I think our numbers are growing, though! I run…
  • Whole wheat pasta and brown rice are clean. Basically, stay away from white (simple) carbs, and eat whole (complex) carbs. Carbs are a necessary part of a clean diet and you should never cut them out entirely. The ultimate goal is to pair complex carbs with a lean protein at every meal (and eat 5 to 6 small meals each…
  • I'll join! I was in a clean eating group here a few months ago, took a break from calorie counting, and now I'm back. I didn't completely stop eating clean, but I have some cleaning up to do! As for the question about dairy, I consider most low-fat dairy to be clean. It doesn't take much processing to skim the fat from…
  • Just the thread I was looking for, and recent, too! I am just getting into barefoot running -- and weight lifting, and just plain living -- after watching my husband benefit from going shoeless over the last couple of years. (He has cured his back pain, and his race times just keep getting better and…
  • I've had to resort to the elliptical most of the time over the last year because I had foot surgery (on a bunion that I've had for most of my life). The elliptical feels good and gives me a decent workout, but it is not quite the same as running. I've also done a lot of advanced step over the years, too, but there's…
  • How could I have forgotten the fresh air?!
