  • I'm assuming that people are afraid of what others might think of their food choices. My diary is public as i've got nothing to be afraid of.
  • Hi To me, 6 meals/day means eat 6 x per day whether it be 6 small meals or 3 meals and 3 snacks. I eat 5-6 x per day to keep my metabolic rate as high as possible. Regards Rob
  • I have my diary open to public. I don't have a problem with constructive criticism. Regards Rob

  • The first BMI was developed based on info from sedentary WHITE people. The World health Organsisation later produced research to show that black, indian or south east asian people required different BMIs. The research that I was involved in showed that people from african origins carried more muscle and had thicker bones…

  • Hi I understand what your saying, but be careful. Medical research in the last decade has shown that white pasta, plain rice and potatoes can be worse than refined sugar at raising your blood sugar levels, but don't jump on the "all carbs are evil" bandwagon just yet. Not all carbs are the same. Choose low GI (Glycaemic…

  • I was involved in research on BMI in the 1990s. Developed by Prof John Garrow in England. BMI was developed to obtain information about a person's weight in relation to their height. It was developed based on info from a large group of sedentary white people, therefore individual BMI scores are not to be taken as…

  • If you have a tool to estimate your calorie expenditure at work. Is it possible to use it to estimate calories used when cooking and cleaning etc during the time you're not at work?

  • Hi I've said that I 'm lightly active (I work at my local hospital on the wards or sitting at my desk on phone/using computer (like now!))...If I have to do extra physical work, I'll add it to my exercise diary. I've been thinking about housework and washing dishes etc as extras, but not currently adding to my exercise…

  • Hi Another Scot, living in Canterbury, England. Originally from Glasgow. Moved south for job, met my future wife. Now have 14-month old son, Alistair. Since getting married (5 years ago) and starting a family I've put on 2-3 stones in weight (fat). Have felt like ****, especially with the sleepless nights since Alistair…

  • Hi From a nutritional point of view, it is generally recommended to eat 30-60min post-workout as this is the time when your body will absorb more nutrients to start repairing and preparing itself for the next workout. The best post-workout meal is a mix of High GI and high protein food e.g, a high protein milkshake made…
  • When I lived with my family they could not be more critical. I decided that I needed to get fitter for sports and lost weight. My family tried to convince me that I was "anorexic" because I didn't want to eat the junk food they considered "normal". Considering my background as a UK registered dietitian I have to remind…
  • Understanding and suppportive friends that keep you going when you feel like giving up. Just like the MFP community!
  • I'm a specialist dietitian in renal disease at my local hospital. Saving lives everyday.

  • Water weight? What clothes were you wearing when you first weighed yourself? When in the day did you weigh yourself? You will weigh more later in the day than first in the morning. Did you weigh yourself just after eating/drinking?
  • Sorry to hear about your experience with the dietitian. I find that "weight management" should be considered a specialised subject and the service should only be provided by people who understands your situation. Weight loss/increasing fitness is challenging, but the following must always be kept in mind: 1. Always enhance…
  • From a historical point of view, the ancient roman aristocracy loved spartan women because they were fit/muscular warriors as well as spartan men. A physically strong woman can be threatening to a lot of men (and women). It also challenges sexual stereotypes. I say good for you for being fit and well toned.
  • Hi Justine It is always better to judge your progress on size rather than weight, especially if your wanting to increase your muscle mass Good luck with your efforts. Keep me posted.
  • Hi Justine Good to hear your committed to improving your health and fitness (although I confess I am worried that losing 4lbs a week is too fast and the level of effort required must be very difficult to maintain long-term). Friend request me so I can follow your progress and give any support/advice I can.
  • Control both... You need carbs for energy (your brain's primary source of fuel is glucose (sugar)). However, eating lots of high glycaemic index foods such as refined wheat products (white bread rolls), white potatoes and anything made from them or sugary sweets will stimulate excessive insulin release in your body.…
  • The comments from your colleague say more about her than they say about you. People are welcome to their opinions. If we all liked the same things, the world would be a very boring place. saying that, there are a lot of ignorant people in the world who say whatever they want without thinking of how they make others feel…

  • Sports coaches often change the training cylce for ther athletes after 6-8 weeks due to the body adapting to the training load (even after training load is increased, there is no increase in performance). This phenomenon also occurs when dieting. When you stop losing weight after several weeks of dieting, your either…
  • We don't eat white rice on its own (or at least I don't). If you add in some meat or fish with vegetables, these lower the GI of white rice so there is less of an insulin spike after eating it. I eat basmati rice - it has a lower GI and tastes better than the "nutty" brown rice. Don't thnk of foods as good or bad- there is…
