  • Do run/walk intervals. You can start out with 1 minute run/4 minutes walk, and then gradually change the ratio of run to walk time as you get more fit.
  • You should be okay in low-mid 70's water without a wetsuit. I'm sure the water will feel chilly, but it would be fine. I assume you are asking because you do not currently own a wetsuit, and are wondering if you need to get one for this race? Because if you have one, I would definitely wear it (as Scott has already said).…
  • As others have said, swimming is a great total body exercise, and you can definitely lose weight doing it. I've never worn my heart rate monitor while swimming, so I have no data to compare it to, but I do think that MFP over-estimates the calories burned for swimming (based on my perceived exertion for my swims compared…
  • Our local Xterra race is definitely not groomed and fast. It's moderately hilly, but then most everything around here is moderately hilly! Not the most technical trail around, but it's what I would consider intermediate level singletrack. You would definitely want a mountain bike. Is the race local to you? Maybe you can go…
  • Interesting how much it varies! I'm 5'9", I weigh 190, and I wear a size 16. 175-ish would probably be a 14 for me. I have a friend who is 5'10", weighs 189, and she is probably wearing a 10-12.
  • I've done 5 HIM's and I did Ironman Wisconsin in 2003. I'd like to do another Ironman, but I need to get my head into a place where I want to spend that much of my life training. Right now it's not there. HIM training is a lot more manageable. I am doing another half this year (Rev 3 Cedar Point) in September. I'm feeling…
  • Wow! You look amazing! Congrats!
  • Aso, I'm not sure how your indoor tri works - the one I did, transitions were not counted in the time for the race. I'm sure others may be run differently, though. Good luck, and have a great time!
  • I roll my socks up like you described, so they go on like unrolling a condom. I go sockless on the bike, though, and put my socks on with my running shoes in T2. My feet are a little drier by the time I get to T2, plus my old bike shoes were a bit too small for me and a lot more comfortable without socks! So I just got…
  • I have done WW successfully in the past. I really liked it, but I was easily able to ballpark the points in my head and found it easy to follow. 1 point was 50 calories, and I would round up if it were particularly high in fat, and round down if it were particularly high in fiber. I couldn't really do that with the new…
  • I'm with you - regulars are just a bit too short, but talls are too long. I am too lazy to hem, though, so I usually just buy talls and wear them with shoes that have a bit of a heel! LL Bean has "medium tall", which would be perfect, if I liked their jeans.
  • I'm 5'9", and my goal is to be a fit 150 lbs. (Although 149 sounds a lot nicer!)
  • I did the 2011 Warrior Dash. Since I am still not 100% recovered from breaking my ankle (3 places, plate and 10 screws to fix) on obstacle #9, I think I will be passing on the 2012 race!
  • Groomed XC ski trails have narrow tracks the width of your skis, so it makes it a lot easier to keep the skis pointed in the right direction. I taught myself, but I haven't done it that much and I still find it pretty awkward (I miss the edges that I have on my downhill skis!). But it's fun when the conditions are good,…
