  • I had acid reflux until I started eating better. I attributed it to stopping bacon, stopping greasy fast food, and not stuffing myself. I can eat bacon occasionally now, without the burn.

  • Beware of sites that are trying to sell you stuff. Dr. Mercola has a huge catalog of items, each with glowing reports of health benefits.
  • Ever spend a few hours on a rocking boat? When you get back onto solid land, for a while your body is still countering the rocking motion. It goes away as you get re-accustomed to no more rocking. Maybe exercise to increase body self-awareness, like looking at yourself in a mirror? Take a walk carrying dumbbells, then put…
  • The best is Bernsteins's Restaurant Recipe Italian Dressing.
  • ver·i·ty ˈverədē/ noun a true principle or belief, especially one of fundamental importance. "the eternal verities" truth. "irrefutable, objective verity" I find the intolerance here of dieting BS refreshing, useful, and effective. The old-timers here have a lot of truth to share.
  • I smear the butter cube across the warming fry pan and log it as 1/2 tsp. If I wanted to be exact, I could weigh the cube, smear/melt the butter, and weigh the cube again for the difference. With olive oil I guess a teaspoon or tablespoon, again I could weigh the difference if I needed that precision. I don't. But you…

  • I put portions of tempting food I make in the freezer. Then I don't feel I have to eat it all today before it spoils. Being frozen makes it harder to eat it on impulse. Thawing takes time and maybe a second thought.
  • I give my dog his bite of my meal before I weigh it. After weighing I get stingy.
  • Last December I was 183 pounds. At 5'11, that put my BMI just into Overweight. I picked a goal of losing 20 pounds, just to have a number. My real goal is to take my waist from "unhealthy" 36 inches to "healthy" 34 inches, then reassess. I have a supply of 32 and 33 inch waist pants I would like to get back into. Those are…
  • I try to clean out the refrigerator of leftovers. Last time it was baked sweet potato, along with a banana and berries. Delicious
  • I started with Muscle Milk Cookies & Cream. Nice, but very sweet. I am now enjoying Naked Whey. No added sugar, flavor, or anything. Grass fed, happy hippy California cows. I load it with fruit in the blender. Downside, it was $89 for a 5 pound tub. I see whey isolate in the bulk bins at Sprouts, about $8 and $12 per pound…
  • Chipotle powder and tumeric on chicken looks and tastes like Pollo Loco. A squeeze of lime to finish.
  • "Just curious as to why you measure in grams and weigh in pounds?" My food scale can be set to metric or imperial, so I go for the easy metric math. Also, it feels more scientific. My body scale can show other units, but I think of body weight in terms of pounds, not kilos or stones. I blame society.
  • Going from living beyond the edge of my calorie limit, where I was totally comfortable, to what feels like unlimited pigging out, is a mindset I am still working on. I worried at first about having big meals, then slacking off on exercise for the day, and putting fat back on. I figured out that if I slack one day, I can…
  • I was about to ask the same question. Two weeks ago I had lost 10 of my 20 pound goal, so I changed my goal from 1 to 1/2 pound per week. My daily cals went from 1,750 to 2,000. At the same time I got back on the bicycle almost daily, now burning 1,000 cals more per day. The first week even stuffing myself I could not…
  • I figured out how to weigh a bone-in chicken breast. Weigh the whole piece. Eat it, and set the bones aside. Weigh the bones and subtract from first number. The bones were 8% of the total weight. Next time I just do the math. Another tip: Forgot to weigh the bowl now containing soup? Put an empty bowl from the same set on…
  • I have cut my regular salad dressings from 2 to 1 tablespoon, and I pour it onto a spoon first to measure. I do like a creamy salad, though. Try this for a dressing: 1/2 to 1 cup of nonfat cottage cheese 1/2 teaspoon of bleu cheese crumbles Mix it in for a crumble in every bite. Tastes like 6 tablespoons of fat dressing.
  • I enjoyed this chocolate chia pudding: http://minimalistbaker.com/overnight-chocolate-chia-seed-pudding/ I used just half the maple syrup listed to sweeten. I will be making it again.
  • Concerned you might be bingeing? I would not call 2,000 calories for a few days bingeing. Maybe blowing off some steam. Food discipline requires some work and commitment. Letting go every once in a while helps to keep your self in balance. Work it into your long term maintenance program. Then it does not equal quitting.
  • When I did my first run with MyFitnessPal back in 2007, Starvation Mode was part of fitness orthodoxy. Here is a discussion from 2008 when it was accepted by all commentors without dissent: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/7611/starvation-mode Another thread from back then says that MFP will warn you of…
  • I see Whey Protein Isolate in the bulk bins at my local grocery. I don't know the price, but I assume it would be way cheaper than the flavored and sweetened packages. Anybody buy it in bulk?
  • On the menu: >Food >Settings >Nutrients Tracked. You can change any of the five that are displayed; select your nutrient from the list, then Save Changes at the bottom of the page. When you add an entry to your diary every nutrient on the list is recorded, but only five are shown on your diary page.
  • Try sharp cheddar and other strongly flavored cheeses. You might be satisfied eating a smaller amount.
  • Try substituting salmon for the chicken. Food of the god of the gods.
  • You might not need to be noting the weight of your plates. Your digital scale probably has a button marked "TARE". If so, you put the empty plate on the scale, press TARE, and that weighs the plate and sets the readout to zero. When you add food to the plate, the reading is now just the weight of the food. After a few days…
  • How about changing your settings to a time zone that matches your schedule? Maybe 12 or 14 hours different, then you would be waking up at Breakfast time. On the menu under My Home > Settings >Change Time Zone
  • Thanks for sharing, for real. This kind of stuff needs to be worked through and solved to be happy. We all would not be here if we thought our bodies were perfect. I prefer "needs improvement" to hate. Lots of good advice above. Best wishes to you.
  • There have been scarey stories about rice, if improperly handled. http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/can-reheating-rice-cause-food-poisoning.aspx?CategoryID=51 I've left a pot of rice on the stove overnight and eaten it throughout the next day. Never had a problem. No harm in being careful, though.
  • Make it adventure. Explore new foods. Check out the recipes forum. Cook. Weigh and log everything. Savor and enjoy the food you eat. Have fun checking your progress on the Charts. Good luck to you.
  • Saw that at an Arby's in California. Reading the menu board left to right, the sandwich prices and calories rise together.
