Pigging out at the salad bar
I love a big salad bar, and always imagined there was immunity from weight gain, since it is all so healthy, right? A lot of customers there appearantly think so, too. Now, in my fourth week of counting, I know better. I have been going to Souplantation once a week for my treat night. That is my time to get stuffed, but in…

My new favorite food: Southern Greens
Trader Joe's sells a bag for a couple dollars: spinach, mustard, turnip, and collard greens. Fried up with garlic and maybe walnuts in a little olive oil. Delicious, and some my good fat for the day.

Feeling svelte
I logged back into MFP this last New Years Eve, after an 8 year absence. I weighed 183 pounds. For a 5'11" man, that was an overweight BMI of 25.5. My goal is to get to 163, then reassess and recomp. I hit 170 yesterday morning. Feeling thinner on the face, and just starting to feel the belly get flatter. Feeling stronger,…

Tracking progress in Microsoft Excel
MFP has a nice set of chart tools, but if I can do it myself, I will. I copied my weight data into a worksheet, and have this so far: This plots pounds, Forecast() by week, and one pound loss per week goal. I weigh-in almost every day. It is telling me I should be eating more to stick to my goal. I can see the week I…

How do you eat healthy when travelling?
The complimentary breakfast in the hotel lobby usually has some easy choices in cereal, fruit, and nonfat milk. Wish they would let the bananas ripen a bit. Big grocery stores with a salad bar make lunch easy. Trader Joe's has good packaged fresh salads. I have learned to say "Hold the mayo." I have yet to find a fastfood…

My Food Scale
I am using the Ozeri Pronto Digital Kitchen Scale, about $13.00. I recommend it. Makes food weighing fast and easy. Last time I was active on MFP, in 2008, I used a Salter mechanical scale. The digital is much better. What scale are you using? Like it?

I want fat for breakfast
Looking back through my food diary, I see that my breakfast and morning snack are giving me very little fat until lunch. I want to balance breakfast so that to get an earier start on my burning. Breakfast is oatmeal, raisins, banana, coffee, and skim milk. Any suggestions on a good early morning fat? I don't do butter,…

Any ideas for eggplant?
I love it, but my usual fried recipe takes a lot of much oil. My other favorite is marinated in Italian dressing, and grilled on the bbq.

Hello all, been six months since I last logged in here
The last weight I recorded then was 168.6 pounds, down from 189 six months before. Today I dragged out the scales for the first time in six months. 168.8. I have kept most of my new, healthy habits. Walking a bit less than before, and not eating as many veggies as I should, but I am maintaining. I even have the occasional…

My cholesterol is way down
Dear Pals, I started here last September after my doctor told me my total cholesterol was 245. I did the American Heart Association diet, counting calories and fat/carb/protein here. No more fast food, very little beef or bacon, alcohol down from 1-2 a day to 1 a week. Oatmeal and lots of fruit and vegetables. Walking…

What's your favorite smoothie?
I start with one cup low-fat kefir, a yogurt-like drink. I would use nonfat if I could find it. It is pretty tart, so usually a banana to sweeten. Then some fruit, and blend. So far, I have tried: fresh blackberries frozen raspberries apple dried apricots Next up: fresh peach mexican papaya cantaloupe dates a few ice cubes…

Homemade chicken broth
Trying to figure nutrition numbers for chicken broth I made. Boiled a chicken with carrots, celery, onion, no salt added. Cooled, then skimmed fat . Lots of variables like how much water left, how much fat skimmed. Found a few online, calories range from 180 to 245, fat 5g to 15g, per cup I added this one to food data base…

I did not get enough sodium today.
I enjoyed spaghetti for dinner tonight, especially happy with the Trader Joe's Organic Marinara Sauce (no salt added, low fat). It is delicious, with only 25mg sodium in 1/2 cup (50 calories). Feeling so wholesome, I ran some reports, and saw that today I ate 310mg of sodium. My average is about 1,500mg. I wondered if…

Hit my 10 pound mark today
I started 9/14 at 182. Six weeks later, today I weighed in at 172. 12 pounds to go. I expect a bit of excess for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but planning to hit it New Years Day.

Eat like a Hobbit, kind of
Hobbits enjoy at least seven meals a day, not including snacks,[5] when they can get them - breakfast, (arguably) second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, tea, dinner and later, supper. They like simple food such as bread, meat, potatoes, and cheese, have a passion for mushrooms, and also like to drink ale and beer, often in…

High Cholesterol
Since my doctor dropped that on me a month ago, I have been following the American Heart Association 2006 Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations. http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=851 I have six months to prove I can do it myself, and avoid the pills. So far, the dieting, exercise, and weight loss have…

No more heartburn
I just unpacked from an overnight trip, and realized I had not used the Tums. Not since I started counting a month ago. I think because of less stuffing myself, and no beef, and especially no bacon. And lots more water? I used to get acid reflux about twice a week. Especially on big breakfast weekends. I am starting to…

Trans fat in my cookies!
I have been careful to avoid any trans fat, so I was surprised to see it show up on Reports. Turned out to be the two Chips Ahoy chunk chocalate chip cookies I had one day. In a smoothie with plain kefir. Delicious treat. My package says 0g of Trans Fat, but the food database has the old formula with trans fat. I added a…

Cooking and freezing 6 cups of brown rice
Love brown rice, but not the cooking time, so I tried cooking a week's worth and freezing it. I cooked up the batch, let it cool some, and measured 1 cup each into zip-lock plastic sandwich bags, and put in the freezer. I do not microwave, so I put the frozen lump into the frying pan along with the turkey breast or salmon,…

Are you enjoying food more now?
I have been counting calories now for three weeks. First time ever on any kind of diet. I used to eat three bowls of cereal in the morning, just cause it was there and was tasty. Now that I am counting each gram, I have 1.5 servings of oatmeal, and savor every bite. Last night I had one cup, cooked, of whole wheat…
