  • Swimming is a great burner of calories, so long as you fight the 'munches' afterwards. I would have thought 4 sessions would be a great start to you goals. Especially if you increase your duration Although I personally don't care about my weight, albeit I am carrying too much. I know that my swimming will burn my fat over…
  • Do you swim breast stroke or front crawl?
  • I've done quite a bit of open water swimming I could talk for hours, but key things are If I had a 1mile open water swim, then I would get to a distance of about 1.3miles in a pool. This will give you the extra confidence on the day and will compensate for any flow of lake water and the cooler water. 'Sighting' ( i..e.…
  • Regarding swimming, I don't consider speed as being the definer of Calorie. This is due to me having a decent technique. Indeed I only consider "effort" when logging cals for swimming. Otherwise my "moderate" swim session would be someone elses "epic" due to their untrained stroke. However swimming is a great burner of…
  • Very true! Technique... :-)
  • P.S. If you are wearing a wetsuit on the day, watch out for chaffing on the back of the neck, with some wetsuits. I'm told some folk apply Aquaglide or some water based lubricant to the back neck to ensure no rubbing. (Petroleum based lubricants can wreck a wetsuit over-time apparently) Apparently you may benefit from…
  • Hi Mama Have competed in long distance lake races from 1mile to 10.5miles in length....(admittedly coming home in the last half of the finishers...) I would suggest :- Re:What is the best way to build endurance for swimming? Just to swim more? Like more lengths or certain drills? When I am building up for any long distance…
  • First some questions... What stroke are you using Mama? - Front crawl or Breast stroke? Wetsuit or not? Do you wear Goggles and do you put your face in the water between breaths:happy:
  • You, my friend, need a "poolmate" watch. http://www.swimovate.com/poolmate.html I don't have one myself.... but they exist.
  • I see this question often and the concensus is that Swimming is a great burner of cals due to the mass of muscle groups being used. I think what is deceiving is that the the water prevents our sweating being as obvious as, say, a gym work out. I burn a minimum 800 cals an hour due to my large frame.
  • More of a long distance swimmer myself.... which overlaps into "TRI-land" - hence I am a member of my local tri club this year... Just for the swimming. And they seem a friendly bunch so far. Then again... anyone jumping in 12 degrees water has to be a little fun loving.
  • "But how are you fitting it in over each week?":- Well.. I'm reckoning on 3 short sessions and 1 long session a week. But anything could happen. :-)
  • Good luck Eric. ... sounds like you have the right frame of mind to carry on achieving. :-)
  • Welcome aboard. :-)
  • Mine is:- Mon- Swim Tues - Swim Wed - Swim.... Infact... I'll cut to the chase I just swim... Plus the dog gets a walk every day too. Not at the same time as the swim though ---obviously. ;-)
  • For a moment, I thought I was reading my own words there (apart from the menopause bit, being a bloke.). Tips.... Ease off the gas a little...... running your self into the ground helps no one. Absolutely no-one! Realise you can't do everything perfectly..... so cut your self some slack. If I get 80% of things right I'm…
  • ....two fold. 1) Do a sport/activity YOU ENJOY and 2) keep trim. For me... Swimming and walking the canine.
