Ab exercises will firm your abs, but you need to combine it with cardio to shift belly fat so you can see them...this is what I'm trying to do. Its hard, but I am determined that one day I will see my abs!!!

Find out if there are any local running groups, it's really helpful to start running with other beginners and see that you're not the only one struggling!
