Really, really chapped lips?
I've been swimming around 2-3 hours per week in our gym's chlorinated pool, and over the past weeks I've noticed my lips are becoming very sore and chapped. This isn't entirely uncommon during a Wisconsin winter, but the soreness feels akin to an actual chemical burn and even extends a bit into the inside of my lips. So…

Does your bike have a name?
Furthermore, do you find yourself talking to it sometimes? Tell me I'm not the only one! My pretty green/purple Trek Lexa is lovingly called "Lexi Baby."

Bike trainer?
We have a decent bike trainer (Kurt Kinetic Rock & Roll), but we've barely started our midwest winter and I'm already kind of bored with it. I've been doing intervals (3 min spin to 1.5 min sprint/resistance), but I'm looking for more ways to mix it up. Any specific programs you'd recommend?

How do you breathe when you swim?
I finally dragged my butt back into the pool today, and a gentlemen commented on the way I breathe. I always do one breath per 3 strokes, alternating sides. For me that's the pattern that comes naturally and doesn't require thought. I'm not a strong swimmer by any means. I can do 400 yards in a pool at a…

How do you train in the winter?
I'm trying to piece together a realistic workout/training program for the winter months. How often do you swim each week? Bike? Run? Lift, etc.?

"First timer" start wave? Help me decide!
I did a sprint tri last year with a pool swim, although I'm not sure whether it qualifies as a "real" triathlon. The original event actually was canceled by our sponsoring gym due to lack of registrants, so a handful of local triathletes helped make it happen anyhow, mostly so newbies like myself could give it a shot.…

Taking the plates off the bar after deadlifting
I suck at it and am convinced there must be some secret way to make it easier. The plates have bumpers, and I spend far too much time awkwardly wriggling them off the bar when I'm done. It's a terrible angle for my lower back, and I'm certain I look like an idiot as I go back and forth between each end of the bar wiggling…

Anyone else doing the Cupid's Undie Run?
I'm running in Chicago. Anyone else?

Increased exertion = increased heart rate = nausea?
I wear a HRM when I run, and I've noticed that 169 bpm seems to be the point where I need to slow down, take a walk break, and/or try not to vomit. If I slow down enough to drop my heart rate even 5 bpm, I feel fine again and can continue without issue. My resting heart rate has always been on the low side of…

Stronglifts or Body Pump? Both? Neither?
I completed about 10 weeks of Stronglifts 5x5 last spring and enjoyed it. I lost inches and body fat, felt strong, and loved the solitude of doing my own thing in the weight room. I stopped the program when I reached the point of potentially risking injury without a spotter. At that time I decided to begin training for my…
